    I was in love with the 9398 back then and I'm happy my parents saw that. That was one of the best gifts I ever got. One suspension piece is broken, but the spring wasn't, which made the problem able to solve. Awesome set, awesome look.

  • @kenrodriguez9645

    The geometry on the 9398 is simply better. More clearance, seems like more flex, geared better, better steering. All it needs is set of BuWizz aftermarket motors and it’ll be the best off-roader by a long shot.
    The chassis is already good, it just needs more power/torque.

      The other thing one could try is flipping the gears on the motor for more torque a s less speed and see if that makes a difference.

      If you swap the gears, motors never stall, the problem is that lego choose a fast gear ratio and this crawler has really no torque.

    I like my 9398 but wished it had locking diffs and/or crab steering- that’d make a sweet rock crawler. Basically totally independent front/rear steer/power. Was surprised when Lego have done two models since that one and still no 4ws

    Killer video. Thanks a lot, Paul.
    I don't own either the 42099 or the 9398, but I do have the 41999 limited-edition version of the latter. Only ever got it for the dark blue parts and the license plate, never actually built it. Still MISB right behind me. But after watching this I'm quite excited to finally get building.
    I do remember all the talk back in the day how it was slow but tenacious. Would plough on and on and on. Nice to see it confirmed here. It's been six years and it still pulls more than its weight, both figuratively and literally. Way to go.

    Thanks for the comparison. I fully agree to your conclusion, 9398 was not an ideal crawler but still better than this new Control+ thingy.
    I just built 42099 up today and tested it inside the house. I am disappointed. Few piece count, too much backlash in the steering so it cannot even go straight forwards and backwards, not enough power (2x XL motors geared up so they have less torque than 2x L motors), the bright light orange parts do not fit to any other technic set and once the simple challenges are completed there is no point in playing with the set any more.

    The effective Bluetooth range will actually vary, depending on what device you are using and the age of the device, where is for the infrared remote. The version one came with the Sun, maybe in the poorest range, but if you get a newer or even an aftermarket knockoff version remote, you’ll find they actually increase the range quite a lot, depending on both the remote and the receiver. When I first got the Lego set for the control, plus Rockcrawler I had a cheap smart phone had very poor Bluetooth. The range was maybe 3 feet before Bluetooth or just shut off but with my current phone and I’ve got an iPhone 13 Bluetooth range is way more than 40 m, also testing their pulling strength by getting both models to pull one and offer is actually an unfair test on the control plus, the control plus motors are designed so that once a certain level of torque is applied on the motor as to actually stop it from losing. It will actually cut the power to the motor to stop it burning out. Where as the order version had no such system

For example would a 3:1 reduction be enough to allow the 42099 to successfully get to the top of the slope test with the plank?
    I'm somewhat tempted to get the 42099, but the power shutdown of the engines under stress is putting me off since i'd want to use the parts to either build a self designed 4x4 vehicle or a tank from it. What I got from this video, (I don’t own either but by looks and nostalgia of wanting the older one makes me like it more) the new one has superior suspension and if it had power functions motors, sbrick and the gear switch and slightly better ground clearance it would be the ultimates crawler

    I guess, if you changed the transmission in 42099 to more of a crawl, the performance test may be switched its favor. As you know, there is always a trade-off between speed and torque.

  • @JonXarteros
    @JonXarteros Před 4 lety

    While I get that the comparison kind of needs to be about the stock models, I feel like a more productive comparison would be with them both having the same control method. The bluetooth controller seems to be the key limiting factor for much of the performance comparison, and it'd be nice to know which one actually has the most oomph

    • @searme
      @searme  Před 4 lety

      The key limiting factor is gearing between motors and wheels, not the controller.

    • @JonXarteros
      @JonXarteros Před 4 lety

      But is the control system of the Powered Up hub/app not the part responsible for cutting power when the motor undergoes too much load? Because if that's the case, the actual gearing needs to be tested under the same conditions (either both with a motor applying constant force, or both with a motor that cuts out under too much strain)
      Forgive me if I'm just confused, I haven't actually got any of the Powered Up sets to tinker with yet
