    Concealment has only been the primary function of uniforms for less than a 100 years. Before that the opposite was true, armies wanted the soldiers to be as recognisable as possible for two reasons. To easily distinguish friendly fighters in the chaos that war used to be and the second being a psychological factor to enemies. British bright red coats, the french bright blue uniforms, enemies only had to glance the uniform colour to see that a very deadly force is coming at them.

    This is ridiculous. These uniforms are ‘copied’ by other countries because they work. There’s no point in inventing a whole new camo if there already is one that suites the job. Another example of this is how most modern tanks are shaped similarly because the design works, and modifying it could potentially just make them worse.

Peru is one of the biggest offenders, but in Asia and South America almost all of them are copies copy the colors, emblems, and/or uniform cuts of the USMC. Even the now defunct South Vietnam Marines used to do it.
    From the top of my head:
    Peru (Pattern, Dress Blues, Utility Uniform Cut)
    Korea (Dress Blues, Utility Uniform Cut, Emblem)
    Thailand (Utility Uniform Cut, Emblem)
    Philippines (Dress Blues, Utility Uniform Cut)

    The British khaki uniforms whilst not a camouflage "pattern" were one of the first uniforms with a form of concealment in mind. The military reforms that took place in the early 1900s were a result of the lessons learnt during the Boer War (as was the School Meals Act.) Ghillie suits were a result of Scottish stalker kit used for hunting deer. The British have lead some innovations in camouflage. Were "adapted" an American commercial pattern camouflage into MTP, a pattern that seems widely adopted albeit with variations. One of my favourite patterns was the old Auscam.

    In the 1960's the Czechoslovak army adopted the vz. 60 uniform that had two shades of nearly identical green as the base with dark brown lines printed on top.
    And in 1965 the East German Army adopted the "Strichtmuster" (I've also seen it called "Strichttarn") pattern uniform which consisted of a tannish-brown base with dark brown lines printed on top.
    Oh, apparently Bulgaria also had a variation of this pattern issued to some units during the 1960s and 70s.
    Multicam should also probably be entioned seeing as pretty much every country uses not multicam itself but a license free copy whether its MTP, Scorpion or whatever else...

A lot of countries are just copying the pixelated look, but the real innovation behind CADPAT was getting computers to design the disruptive micropatterns. Even more innovative are the ideas Canada was looking at for an urban environment camo pattern (CUEPAT). They ended up either being too non-traditional (ie. weird) for the Canadian Armed Forces or CAF decided that an urban-only pattern wasn't practical. My guess is a combination of both, but with more weight on the latter.

    M1929 Telo mimetico (Italian: camouflage cloth) was a military camouflage pattern used by the Italian Army for shelter-halves (telo tenda) and later for uniforms for much of the 20th century. Being first issued in 1929 and only fully discontinued in the early 1990s, it has the distinction of being the first printed camouflage pattern for general issue, and the camouflage pattern in longest continuous use in the world.[1]

    • @canemcave
      @canemcave Před rokem

      In 1944, telo mimetico was adopted by the Germans and distributed to Waffen-SS units operating in Italy and Normandy during the spring and summer of 1944. Most frequently published photos show members of the 1st and 12th SS Panzer Divisions wearing the Italian attire along with a mix of standard issue Waffen-SS uniforms and equipment. After the Italian surrender, stocks of the Italian pattern were captured and used on other fronts.[3] Some of it appears to have ended up in the hands of Czechoslovakian and Soviet units.[4]
      It is possible that the whole production machinery was moved by the Germans to Czechoslovakia, laying the foundation for the country's post-war production.[5]

    • @canemcave
      @canemcave Před rokem

      Originally only printed on shelter halves, the pattern was not intended to be worn by soldiers though the shelter halves could be used as rain-ponchoes. From 1942, the printed fabric was also used for smocks for the Italian paratroopers. At some point before the outbreak of the Second World War, the pattern was changed, possibly to accommodate printing with smaller rolls.

    a more recent case was russia copying the finnish M05 pattern, with their jagel pattern. to be frank, it wasn't just a version, it was a 1:1 photocopy, with parts of the pattern being a direct match with the M05.
    Some argue that the M05 is a copy of the canadian cadpat, but this is just not true. the colors are similar, due to flora of finland and canada being very similar. both are a digital pattern. but the finns genuinely developed the M05 pattern on their own. they're just similar.
    the finns actualy fed a ton of pictures of their forrests to a computer algorithm that then produced the pattern from the most prevalent shapes and colors of finnish forests.
    ofcourse you could also argue that the finns copied the german tropetarn with the M04 desert pattern, but the M04 has more green on it. still a very close in comparison. it is likely that the finns took lead from the tropetarn, but it's not a 1:1 copy.
