    I was on this same cruise ship in June 04 on my honeymoon, from NYC to Bermuda. The Zenith is small as far as cruise ships go but it was a great time. best vacation of my life. Cant wait to go again. Celebrity is a great cruise line. I believe this ship has been retired since. Celebrity crew was great. not much you can do about the weather. Ride it out.

    Cool video! I remember TS Gordon when it hit the area I lived in Florida. It wasn't an exceptionally "bad" storm, but it flooded everything and downed a lot of trees and power lines. Thankfully we lived on a lake, and because we lived in the middle of nowhere--no power=no water, so we bathed in the lake for a few days. Anyway, thanks for sharing the video.

    I'm a crew member and that's pretty standard. The waves will never reach 11 stories above the water. The sea spray will. It looks to be Beaufort Scale 5 or 6, so the wind will be 30 to 40 knots and the wave swell be be about 3 to 4 meters in height, from trough to crest. Good fun and certainly no danger here.

      S.Scotty...the roughest ferry I was ever on as a kid was Dieppe-Newhaven on a tiny 1947 built ferry called 'Falaise' ..it was horribly rough and the tiny ship closed the deck for safety. Larger ships probably ride the waves better.

      30 to 40 knots is beaufort 7-8, near gale to gale. 5 or 6 only goes up to 27 knots (which is itself a fair bit of wind, since force is exponentially proportinal to speed) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaufort_scale

    @mamachops777 Please know this was very unusual--thus the video. Most cruises are on ships where you can't even feel the boat moving. You go to sleep in one place and wake up, refreshed, in the next place. In that sense it's quite possibly the perfect way to travel if it goes between the places you like to visit.

    @kiraklas No discount. In fact, a friend of mine was on a Carnival cruise out of Florida that ran into weather and didn't make a single stop. It just sailed around in the storm for the week, then came home. No refund, no discount, no free drinks, nada. On this Celebrity cruise, certainly the staff onboard worked very hard to make the best of it. You hear how chipper the daily announcement is, and they scheduled as many indoor activities as they could. So they deserve credit for trying.

  • @marcus2s
    @marcus2s Před 11 lety +1

    I travelled on board Zenith & Horizon a number times and the trouble with them both was that they wallowed in heavy seas and the stern used to waggle like a duck's tail as it went down in every trough. It was most disconcerting!

  • @marcus2s
    @marcus2s Před 12 lety +1

    Nice Video! I did the Bermuda run both Zenith and Horizon a number of times in those days and the weather out of New York was often bad. Those Celebrity ships were too short for the kind of seas they regularly encountered and their "sea manners" were never very good. The newer, bigger ships are rather steadier but even they have to slow right down to avoid risking structural damage and passenger injuries!

    I know each ship has a varying degree of stability, seemingly by age of the ship. The Pride might be an older and smaller ship. This was the Zenith--probably an 80s build, nothing like the behemoths being launched today. The big ships probably would have smoothly moved through this storm.

  • @crunchycrispybacon
    @crunchycrispybacon Před 13 lety

    @SavingNines wrong, the higher levels on a ship swing more then the lower levels, it is amplified up on top. The bow also pitches more than the stern does.

  • @ToddBeck
    @ToddBeck  Před 13 lety +5

    @sjtom57 Don't be silly. The Dramamine would be cheap. But it would have to be prescribed by the ships doctor, for whom fifty bucks is just his evening bar tab.
    Seriously, yours is a funny insight into the modern cruise ship. Things used to be generally all-inclusive. Now it's truly nickel and dime.

We were recently in 16' swells on the Norwegian Dawn in the Gulf and nobody would tell us anything except to please use caution when getting around. While I realize it's not dangerous, it's just flat out miserable. It would help to know roughly when things might calm down.
