The Fighting scene implies that their Drivers were just 100% fine with pushing other engines into various locations and items.
Luke if you can respond, please touch upon the ignored crews in Season 9. Calling All Engines here really demonstrated the stupidity of ignoring them
Maybe the engines can move around on their own in their free time, but the drivers are there when there’s work to be done
Occam's razor. The drivers were all super fucking drunk.
@@Angrybird5429. Wasnt there a hole episode where Thomas tried driving himself and crashed down a cliff cause he couldnt stop?
The driver's were like "I'm getting to old for this shit." "They don't pay me enough for this shit."
One thing that I always loved about the fight sequence was while everyone else was just getting bumped into dirty places, Henry just straight up derails Diesel without any hesitation
My man just straight up *DUNKED* his ass with minimal effort
I'll bet it was his revenge for trying to show him up in The World's Strongest Engine
@@fanofeverything30465 Also Diesel once called him old square wheels
OMG yes I've always noticed that and no one has ever mentioned that and I've always thought it'd be funny you he straight-up shoves him in that hole
@@tazzmaniandevilboy42 Oh yes And lied about him in the Railway Series
I love it when fans come up with their own improvements of existing terrible stories, it really shows the creativity and one’s true love of the franchise, and this rewrite is no exception.
Plus, holy s**t, I’d never thought I’d see someone discuss the same Magic Roundabout DVD, and the quiz game I had as a kid. I thought I was the only one who owned that DVD.
ah james a williams great to see you here. i like your videos. and you actually speak facts about old cartoon shows
I've had that Magic Roundabout DVD for a decade, and I still have it to this day.
NWR1991 stated in one of his 2000-2012 timeline video that this special did recap the construction and opening of the Sodor Airport of the KellsThorpe Branchline back in 1977, the main story focusing on the steamies vs diesels rivalry was completely fictional.
@@ryanmoberley7452 that was just his own au, such an event is never said to have occurred in the RWS
Hey there James. Great to see you here.
Those learning segments in this video are comedy gold. Way better than the movie's version.
Indeed, agreed.
Agreed. For some reason it reminded me of when I watched this a child and I just screamed at the screen for it to be over with.
My foward button didn't work at the time.
@@cheng3580 A moment of silence for your patience.
I choked on my food as I watched that
@@cheng3580I can only imagine that seeing the self-aware learning segments in this video was a cathartic experience for you.
As a person with autism
I was incredibly caught offguard by the line "Thomas and Friends massively appeals to children- and adults with autism". It's the most 'funny because it's true' line I've ever heard and it's amazing
Counterarguments for your rant about the dream sequences:
1. They are tbf nightmares and usually even for somebody who isn't stupid, nightmares tend to make no sense whatsoever
2. I'd argue these fates (Percy's excluded) are actually WORSE than being scrapped
At least if you're scrapped, it'll all be over with in a few hours and you're dead!
Bro imagine being alive but you're just alone in a field all forgotten, and nobody cares about you
Or being degraded to a child's plaything for all eternity and never actually getting to do anything ever again
Or getting PELTED WITH OBJECTS FOR ALL ETERNITY and nobody cares about how you actually feel and just laugh
You make a fantastic point yeah
I just found it funny how so clearly wanted to shy away from the idea of the engines being scrapped for the sake of being goofy for the kids lol
I'd hate being stuck in one place for all eternity too
As somebody who actually likes CAE as it is (I personally think the learning segments are the only actual bad parts), your fix was actually kinda nice! It strays away from the usual tropes and trappings that plague most of these movie fixes that I’m actually kinda sick of at this point
Example of one of those tropes I’m sick of? Because it’s a movie about steam vs diesel, it must AUTOMATICALLY take place during the 60s rail modernization plan!
I remember watching this movie as a kid and feeling bad for the engines on those nightmares, even Percy
The narrator was right about one thing - Percy did have the ‘worst’ dream of all!
that's just Owen's life from Blue Mountain Mystery in a nutshell@@usualblokeluke
39:24 Smudger’s laugh really suits Chick Hicks
I love how despite the special's title. It only focus on the characters that seemed marketable at the time. Meaning characters such as Duck, Oliver and Stepney are completely ignored. With the exception of Daisy and Derek. But even then they didn't get enough screentime.
Duck ABSOLUTELY should've been in this movie considering he was LITERALY the first character to deal with the Diesel conflict.
He was supposed to be, but was dropped in favour of Emily.
@@ciarangleeson2880 They could have incorporated both
I know, right?
@@ciarangleeson2880 Then again maybe HiT would have ruined Duck's character like they did Emily's
Your take on Calling All Engines is SOOOOO much better than the one we got! I love how you incorporated the Railway Series book "James and the Diesel Engines" into the plot, it feels so inspired! And I also love the learning segment parodies! Great work, Luke! 😁👍❤️
I say, even I will have to agree on that.
Hello, I’m MegaToon1234.
And used The Fastest Red Engine On Sodor's sequence.
11:53 Honestly, I think the fates in their dreams are actually worse than getting scrapped. At least when you get scrapped, that’s it, no more pain, but in their dream fates, they’re still alive, and they’re suffering. James constantly has balls thrown at him and he can’t make them stop, Gordon has children climbing all over him, and making him uncomfortable, Edward has to just sit in a field, covered in mud, while Mcoll just ignores him, and Percy is thrown around a scary ride over and over and over again, with no end in sight, and he can’t even anticipate the drops because of the googly eyes covering his real eyes.
One thing I would've loved to see is if they brought in the road vehicles into the conflict like after the Fat Controller scolds the steam and diesel engines for all the confusion and delay they caused, he enlists to the road vehicles to help (and maybe have George and Bulgy make snarky remarks that their railway will be shut down to the roads for good).
Also, who can forget that brutal storm scene and collapsing suspension bridge scene? Talk about epic with physical models man.
I don't think The Fat Controller would do that
That's not a bad idea, having the road vehicles be a prime factor in helping the engines realise they need to put their prejudice for each other aside and work together
The Fat Controller only scold the steam engines for causing confusion and delay! Fat controller needs to scold the diesel engines for all the trouble they cause! I don’t know why he didn’t scold the diesels in the first place? @@jacobjcb8883
I love How This Review Is almost as long as the actual movie
And just like the original movie, it's all thanks to the learning segments 😂
Mohammed Geedi: Here is how I would fix "Calling All Engines":
#1: Have All Steam Engines & Diesels Work Together [Spencer, Fergus, Splatter, Dodge, etc]
#2: Cut Out Thomas Being Wrongfully Blamed For The Cracked Runway Incident
#3: Have Emily Geuninely Comfort Thomas After The Tidmouth Sheds Fiasco
Wilbert and Christopher: *depict more good diesels than bad and show that sometimes steam engines are no better*
This special, meant to commemorate the 60th anniversary of their hard work: *we don’t do that here. Diesels being pure evil go brrr*
Genuinely how do you miss the point of the movie this hard
Diesels are not at all depicted in this as pure evil, the movie makes it clear as day that Thomas is the main one at fault in all of this AND that every engine, steam or diesel, has some amount of blame to share
Honestly far better than the RWS, which usually always places BR as literally the railway equivalent of Satan and where most of the good diesels get little to no focus after their debuts

That revamp story of Calling All Engines is SUPER good. I love the role James plays in that one. It really shows how much missed potential the special had, even if I have a big soft spot for it.
I hate how the heart goes away when you edit your comment. Come on YoTube!
This will be like the Unlucky Tug's comeback video of his thoughts on "Big World! Big Adventures!" and how he can fix it! I'm so down with your return on analyzing Thomas the Tank Engine content, Luke!

The fight sequence is probably the best scene in this film.
I don't know, I'm still caught on Percy.jpeg
I remember watching the movie when I was little, and I was like what the fuck is this movie?? Yep, I learn the language from CZcams, but I didn't go through to details what it means. But still, the movie is boring...
I can imagine if D199 and D7101 were in that scene, they'd just be watching this happen with them saying...
D199: Can't believe the diesels on this island, fighting with the likes of these tin kettles.
D7101: For once, I can agree with you on that...
I swear, the way how Angelis says “then there was trouble” @ 15:44 sounds impassioned but very hilarious at the same time 😂😂😂
I can totally see Angelis watching that scene in the recording booth where the bridge colapses and just going "Flippin heck" in an outtake 😂
@@usualblokeluke So true
To be fair the stop-motion era of Bob the Builder proves seasons can be yearly with still being decent despite the last few seasons of the PBI era using the three strikes formula.
And we also have the Brenner era of Thomas which was yearly.
MOHAMMED GEEDI:
In my honest opinion,
Owen Wilson and Derek Stephen Prince should be the brand new US voices for Bob and Scoop.
MOHAMMED GEEDI:
Also in my opinion -
Wendy, Muck, Dizzy, Roley and Lofty should have brand new US voice actors:
1. Bonnie Hunt as Wendy
2. Barbara Mamabolo as Muck
3. Ariel Winter as Dizzy
4. Max Charles as Roley
5. Alex Hood as Lofty
Unlike the actual film, the learning segments are the highlights of the video
You should make a script of your revised version of “Calling All Engines”. It sounds great!
This makes The Great Discovery look like a masterpiece, even though it already was. Overall, this was an ok special, not bad, but not good either. This is definitely a special you’ll probably watch if you get bored or if you want to laugh at it. And I love your review and how you would rewrite it, it’s pretty spot on. In my own little rewrite, I would make Diesel 10 destroy the sheds instead, I guess to make him menacing and a threat, I would still need a reason.
I never knew i needed gordon liking his tent in my life.
Also i really want the laughing as background music. That would be funny
The Learning Segments are the primary reason as to why some people started to call Thomas and Friends a “baby show” for some time, and this special and the “HIT Era” in general would’ve been better off without them.
If I remember correctly, an SIF interview with Sam Barlow said that the Learning Segments were there to extend the runtime, which I guess explains why the special is exactly 1 hour
I never understood why the steam engines believed that the diesels PURPOSELY destroyed the sheds, even when Diesel told them that they were supposed to build the new sheds.
I really liked how you changed the story of Calling All Engines like how it’s the start of a new era. Even though the story had a good concept but executed poorly, I liked at the end of the special that part where Emily moved into Tidmouth Sheds and her spot being earned after 2 seasons of getting too know her.
While Thomas & The Magic Railroad had done flaws. I’m still very nostalgic for it. I will always respect Britt and her team as I know she wanted to try something new. I consider it as one of my favorite Thomas movies
Me too, Thomas and the magic railroad holds a special place in my heart.
I fully agree
@@jamari45 And mine
The satirical educational learning segments are the funniest parts of this 😂
Calling All Engines had potential but was disappointing as a result. Your take on it works so much better.
Sidenote - I have very fond memories of The Magic Roundabout movie.
YEAH BABY! Looking forward to this, a childhood favourite Thomas “movie”
Just seen the review in full and I can agree with your points. It could’ve been better and I’m glad you took a stab at doing just that.
Also loved the parts where you took the piss out of the learning segments based on your daily life. And Chick Hicks doing the Smudger laugh is a childhood collision of worlds I never expected to love but did.
Thank you so much for coming back. I prefer Thomas And The Magic Railroad than this because Calling All Engines has the new theme, The Engine Roll Call which is what I Dislike when I prefer the classic Thomas era before HIT took Thomas
I feel like if things were released in your schedule (CAE being the first major HIT project) there could've been a great chance that it would've been the final project that David Mitton and the original crew could've worked on before leaving, and knowing this could've happened if there were 2 more braincells in HIT's headquarters, it makes it more frustrating. But still, great review, and a great different take on the film
The juxtaposition between the boring film and entertaining video is crazy! Loved this one haha.
Can’t wait. It feels like an eternity since your last main season review so I’m more stoked than the average train. I sort of remember this one from my youth, but only the hellish nightmare sequences which traumatised me and the fact there was an airport. It truly was as boring as it’s made out to be.
percy's nightmare scared me more than the others when i was like 5
Regardless of the HIT era, the writers should have maintained Diesel 10's villainous character and never portrayed him the way they did in the special and help out since it doesn't suit him as most fans stated. If it weren't for Mattel deeming Diesel 10 too scary to appear after Series 17, CGI Brenner era could have undo the bad writing that Miller era and Calling All Engines put on him and stay true to his villainous persona by returning it in CGI style which would make it greater. Also, if someone else improves Calling All Engines like me, it would have Diesel 10 be the main villain and causing trouble to make the conflict between steam and diesel even worse instead of helping them. That would be even better for him to appear since his debut regardless of the era. Hope you understand what I'm saying.
Man, I’d pay good money to see your vision of this movie brought to life. Couple that with Headmaster Hastings remixes of all the songs in it, and that would probably make it one of my favorite Thomas movies. Really like how you gave James a lead role.
I have the idea for this.

20:10: Cool, so that's were Splodge went after Magic Railroad? THIS IS PERFECT! For a kids' show.
No, but seriously. In two of the T&F CGI specials (Day of the Diesels & The Great Race to be precise), Splatter & Dodge were originally considered to written back from the brink. However, they were dropped out of both, & got replaced by Paxton, Sidney, & the Mainland diesels (which (along with Diesel, ‘Arry & Bert) were all the same basis: a British Rail Class 08 diesel-electric shunter). Most likely for marketing purposes. Dennis the Lazy Diesel, as well, was supposed to come back in D.O.T.D., too, but was dropped and replaced by Norman (again, both of them are the same engine basis, this time, a British Railways No. 11001 prototype diesel from 1949). Just something I figured was worth mentioning.

This was a fantastic video. I enjoyed the rewritten version of the movie most of all through out the video. Great job, Luke!
I really like your take. It’s full of references & much more in character for the characters. I feel like James’ roles could be shared between the other characters as he seems to be more of the focus than even Thomas
Yes
I actually had an idea for a rewrite where Duck has some of that role since he was the first steam engine to deal with the diesel conflict
25:48 what's even weirder is that they put emphasis on Emily being the only engine lives at Knapford sheds even though the previous seasons shows that she does have to share the shed with other engines as Knapford sheds is where Murdoch Arthur Harvey and Salty live
The learning segment skits that you portrayed had me practically falling out of my chair I was laughing so hard. Great work! 👍
The learning segments made by you were more entertaining than anything in the HiT era. You've inspired me to make my own for my series. 34:42 actually killed me. The zoom-in is what made it work.
LOL, tbh I never would've thought of that mistake. Imagine if you "caused" Timouth Sheds to be destroyed. Someone's getting devastated
The rewrite of yours is honestly inspiring and 20 times better than the original
When I was about 14 or 15, I stumbled across the fight scene on CZcams (under the title of "Thomas The Tank Engine Loses It"). That was the hardest I'd laughed in a while.
In theory I liked what this was going for, taking the three strikes format which would become common place in this era, though rather than have a rushed resolution there are long term consequences, though the execution is what let's it down with the pointless games and songs.
That learning segment parody was peak Thomas parody content. Well done. 🤣
the opening “learning segment” is incorrect, he should have drunk the ertl sticker face thomas in the background! then he’ll want to watch anything to do with thomas!
This was the point where Thomas became nothing but nostalgia to me.
21:52 Well, Edward was already using the Breakdown train at the time.
Nice work, like your review on it since the first. This was my first exposure to Thomas, fun fact: I thought that this is the beginning of the HIT era series before S8 till I realise years later and you are right to point out the learning segments; the waste of it for the movie unlike the following next one which had it separate from itself.
I like your idea change of the movie given that I think James dealt with the diesels more than Gordon, henry and Edward and definitely want to get back at them and as Thomas could feel the threat and kind fix bits here and there.
Also, no offenders I like this movie a lot regardless it is bad in some areas but holds a place in my heart.
Those your own learning segments in between the review is really funny
Yes finally I've been waiting for this video for awhile now. This is going to be a great review as always from you Luke
The learning segments in the video just make this review perfect. Awesome work!
That rewrite is soooooo sweet! If somebody has enough models to film this ot would be so gooooooooooooood. I hope somebody does this. Beautiful video!
Your rewrite on the film is honestly very good 👍
Honestly I just wish they had dumped the Steamies vs Diesels conflict after this special. That development being undone undercuts one of the few good things about CAE, which is the message about overcoming differences and not judging someone for the group they're a part of
Well, the diesel antagonists has to remain that way to cause more trouble to prove how better they are which is why the Steamies vs Diesels conflict continues since it's part of the show with threat of diesels taking over.
I mean it lead to the absolute dumpster fire that was Day Of The Diesels, so it wasn't really worth it imo
@@soulblaze-uf2di Just stating something for you to understand that some things just continues.
I really want to see your version of this made into a movie! It's so much better than the original
I loved this review. You and The Unlucky Tug speak the truth and are honest of every season and special so far, and I can't wait to see more of the reviews. I agree with everything you said throughout the review, and the learning segments you did were like an Easter egg to what you felt about the segments pausing the special. I don't know what Hit was thinking when they embedded the segments into a special. A SPECIAL! Can you imagine watching a movie in the theater, and then those types of segments interrupt it?
I loved your take on how you had changed the special. Having James along with the plot would've been a good touch-up, as James was rescued by Thomas after his brakes failed. I wonder how Andrew Brenner would've made this special.
You know what’s funny? I actually thought that the pipe under which Henry was shunted was leaking coffee. Also, there’s no way that an 08 can shove a Black Five like it’s made of nothing, especially not at that speed. Also, it can’t stop that quickly.
I’m pretty sure I thought that was soda when I was really little
That was awesome! I think that would be cool if your version was adapted as a rewrite. I also had a good laugh out of your learning segments. If I was writing it, I would have done the same but did things different. The first thing I would do is bring back every character that we haven't seen in a long time and have them help out like Boco, Duck, Donald, Douglas, Oliver Stepheny, Bill, and Ben and how many more characters can we get in for the special? 😀I will admit I think it would be a good idea to focus on James for the special and I really like how you did that. The second thing I would do is no learning segments, and I would make this special a movie and have it release in theaters. The third thing I would do is to make this special exciting and I would bring back Britt Allcroft and David Mitton to help out with the special.
I vaguely remember when this movie came out when I was 1 nearly 2. Good to see this series returning after almost a year.
This is a fantastic review as always, I really enjoyed hearing what you would have written for the special if you had a chance to. I honestly wish, and I think everyone else does to, that we got something like this. You're an amazing content creator, keep making great content like this!
‘You did this children, this is your fault.’ Had me dying.
49:43: I think Thomas would take James' place here since he wouldn't be doing much in the climax of cleaning up the mess, otherwise.
Yeah good point
I noticed that a while after I'd posted the video lol
Not sure if it's just me, but something that sticks out in my mind after watching reviews on CAE is that, to an extent from what I saw in the US, the whole steamies vs diesels thing played into a larger issue of steam vs diesel traction amongst railway enthusiasts. Quite a few older grumpy people thought that steam was best and that diesels killed "true locomotives" or something along those lines. I think CAE and the HiT era in general created a new generation of people that thought like that- despite the good diesel characters. I saw a few people still thinking that way on Deviant-art back in around 2015. It's so weird looking back on this now after 15-20 years on and having read the source material, developed critical thinking, etc. the HiT era just really sucks as an entry point to the series.
Get this man a time machine we need a special like what he said now but even more so back then we'll done sir
Honestly I really like this movie.
I find calling all engines forgettable
I barley had any memories of it when I was I child,
I do like how they brought back some characters like Diesel 10, lady, George and daisy, the steamies vs Diesel sequence where they biffed and bashed each other was great and that one of the only things I remember from the movie
There are a few songs such as “try to do things better” and “busy” I liked and the storm sequence was pretty good
But the movie moves TOO slow and feels like a regular episode stretch out and the learning segments were awful
Everything felt too childish like the engine’s dreams and the narration feels too dumb down
I don’t thing calling all engines is awful or anything, just mediocre in my opinion
I was today years old when I found out that the Annie and Clarabel props in Sir Topham Hatt’s Holiday were new. I thought they were just painted differently
What does today years old mean

I always love the effect where in some reviews, those who talk about tv shows or movies, they pose themselves in a dramatic but very comedic effect to show the audience just the frustration that most had to endure. With how you were so baffled that two learning segments were cut out because of the run time and we immediately get a shot of you muffled screaming into your pillow.

I grew up watching the classic series but when I watched CAE (1st HIT Era show I’ve watched) that’s when I thought “wait something’s wrong”

Calling all engines is in my opinion an underrated movie but your take on it is definitely much better. Plus this review is absolutely fantastic!
Maybe because it was his and his alone that made Gordon appreaciate the tent. His own 4....well two walls.
34:25 this unlocked a repressed memory I had watching this movie! I remember think Diesel pulling a train of bananas was the funniest thing, and when the Fat Controller told off the engines about how bananas are bad for construction, I got sad as he was telling me off for doing a bad thing… 10/10 writing

The animated learning segments were animated by Gizmo Animation Limited.
I think your version of Calling All Engines is absolutely perfect! Its a story that still involes an airport made and a rival with the diseals, but much more organized. As a longtime Thomas & Friends fan, I never entierly liked Calling All Engines as a kid, but your version makes me wanna travel back in time and make this all possible.
Also, I have a question: If you really were given the opportunity to write calling all engines, who would you hire to be the narrator?
Oh… Boy. I already hear it from Thomasfan261 and from the Unlucky Tug.
And here we go again.
For the 3th time…
Can't believe this is finally here after waiting a whole year for it basically. I really like the idea of incorporating the idea of the James and the Diesels (or whatever its called) book into the story but done better, basically improving 2 ideas with missed potential for the price of 1.
Youre take on calling all engines really shouldve been in the movie. Its a good way to treat a franchise that has been around for 60 years back in 2005, And would give OG thomas fans more respect towards HIT Entertainment (If they kept the stories interesting).
The learning segment parody was hilarious.
