► Quite a few people have asked - MODWAVE or HYDRASYNTH?
Pros for modwave: more wavetables, user wavetable support, samples, a broader range of effects, bi-timbral, kaoss physics, better sequencer, cheaper, 32 voice vs 8 voice
Pros for Hydrasynth: poly aftertouch, better keyboard and pitch bend wheel (if using the keyboard version),mod waveshaping options, visual indication of modulation and parameter values, fewer fx but the reverb is better IMHO, better IO including CV

korg has been on a 5 year run of greatness now.
Those 5 pound plastic cases are just terrible. They feel like recycled Happy Meal toys. They definitely need to build a professional instrument like Moog, ASM, Sequential, etc.
@Kurt Faasse I work a normal, full time day job, run a record label by myself, release my own music, and get paid to tour. If you want something, work for it.
@@VincentPresley I don't get why people say that. Every synth and other thing I own I worked for over the past decade in my career.
@@ncapone87 It was a reply to someone making claims that I was some rich snob. I was just pointing out what I do in order to have these things.
@@VincentPresley oh I figured. I get that too sometimes when I talk about my gear. I'm hardly rich

@@BeastlyAnteater you must be fun at parties
Very nice. Another compelling and original modern synth from Korg! Love it! Thanks Ziv!
Thanks for another fantastic review. I’ve had mine on preorder since January. I can see it’s totally worth the wait and yes I look forward to designing patches with it.
Love the variety in each of the presets; astounded by the overall depth of possibility. Certainly a unique instrument.
A fascinating instrument with what seems an endless amount to explore. Very impressive.
Thank you for a quick intro showcasing some of what it can do. Very appreciated
Korg making great synths as usual, i was in two minds if to get the wavestate or the modwave and i think this will be in my studio as soon as its out, thanks for the great demo and tutorial.
I like your way of presenting waveforms with your scope!
I have been looking for this video! Thank you!
Those new Korg units are both stunningly mesmerizing and scary to me at the same time, haha. SOOO many options and features. All for very little money. That's crazy imho, especially when you look at the very fair pricetag. And to be honest, you don't really need more than one or two of these and can start exploring endless sonic territory, honing your sound design skills. A great time to be alive... Solid and accessible gear for everyone.
Thte UX of these new devices is the best its ever been - but the sound quality is the worst its ever been. Miniaturization and cost-cutting for the Beats/Airpods generation has really brought it down. I recently restored a Yamaha TG77 and the sound quality is lightyears from this toy.
@@xfloodcasual8124 Interesting! We may have lost the sense for great sound due to the lack of machines like the TG77. I mean, when I testdrove the Minilogue XD, I did not compare it to something else and quite frankly liked it, hehe. But I DO own classic drum machines (909, 808) and can clearly sense the difference there when compared to let's say an RD-8 or a TR-09.
Real talk. All three are vast in their own way
Full Ack. I started my synthesizer addiction about 30 years ago, and when I think about how expensive it was back then.... I spent incredible amounts of money together with a friend. For a tiny fraction of that you can get the Modwave today, and that alone opens up a universe of possibilities.
@@xfloodcasual8124 The point is: how do you define "sound quality"? Some synthesizers from the 80s have terrible sound quality (from a sound engineer's point of view, with aliasing, frequency response and all that) - yet they have tremendous character. Like the DX7 or the D-50. "Sound quality" is a completely useless criterium for synthesizers.
Love the new gain options with the filter. Hope they add that to the Wavestate.
"Mousing around, looking for a knob" - Finbarr Saunders would be proud of you, sir.
Doubt he knows who Finbarr Saunders is tbh 😂
Fnup!
Fnar fnar.
Wonderful review! As always. Just ordered this beast after watching the complete review. Thanx!
Nobody does this like u bro. There are some wicked channels out there. But sometimes can baffle you. You break it down and Explain the Synth,Drum machine, Sampler etc, so well. It's just another level 👏🙏🔥👊👊💪🔥🔥🔥
Fantastic demo, and thank you for uploading it! Love the sounds I'm hearing so far.
That is a heck lot of synth! Thank you again for another amazing review.
Another great video review/tutorial/demo, best channel on the interweb! 🎹🔊
I love the immediate connection to its editor software, that puts it high on my wishlist.
One year later I actually own the Modwave and rewatch your video. Thanks again Sir.
I have the wavestate which as people already know is very heavy especially in it's ability to create wave synthesis and sounds from scratch. This is here is quite intriguing.
@loopop: I’m an iPad guy without a laptop so I can’t get the editor for this but this video made me think that indeed I could manage without the computer. What a sound !
I'm overwhelmed by all the features. It looks and sounds amazing but I think I'd go bonkers trying to find the sound I want.
Honestly that's probably my biggest reservation too. Sometimes too much choice can be paralyzing, I might end up spending an hour just deciding which filter to use on a patch lol, at least while still getting accustomed to all the choices.
@@ianmorton1799 I have bought this some great sounds but totally baffling ...
Blimey, Korg is on a roll... :-O Always love your comprehensive reviews!
Just letting Korg know this video made me put in an order for the modwave. Great review - great channel.
Very complete test as always ! thank you !
Just subscribed my dude, best Modwave demo I've seen. Thank you.
Great video. I would dig see a video showing examples of the generative aspects of the Modwave.
All 3 Korg new digitals are must have and endless fun. Compared to some other manufacturers that do retro replicas, Korg took 3 different synthesis technologies from the 80s and brought them to the new updated level suitable for 2020+. Imagine if they made keyboard detachable so you can easily make table top modules such as Minilogue XD module. Cheers! S
I own modwave for a few weeks now and still try to tame this beast. In this task, your video is the reference I keep coming back to. So cool, thank you!
Thanks and that's great to hear!
I am totally sold on Korg and love my Wavestate and this I really want also and will buy. Korg please stop producing more great gear ha ha
Thank you for such an awesome review!
some serious depth there! 22:11 that timing feature (per step editable) is excellent
Another great video! These are really helpful, so thanks so much! This synth looks really tasty however I'm not sure whether to get this one yet and might wait a few months. I already have a Wavestate and Minilogue and haven't played with either as much as I would like.
Korg never ceases to amaze me.
korg has passed a few weak units off but they have something for everyone. Some are lost gems!
Fantastic demo. I can’t wait for mine to show up
Very cool so deep review. As usual. Thank you.
Great review loopop, thumb up!
Own it, love it - literally my only beef is I want to see the active wavetables within the editor. Maybe with a future update.
This looks good !!
At last. I've been waiting for this video for a long time.
I have the Modwave. The sounds you can get are amazing. Great value for money.
Thanks for the video and the many sound examples.
Awesome tour/tutorial
Omg ..want this one !!!
I'm just starting this but I'm already happy and shocked to see Korg finally gave us a 64 step sequencer
I am loving my new sequencer and wish it was a bit larger...it controls a 2600 clone, 500 clone, two moogs, and a matrixbrute and sends data to a force via USB, probably going to buy another. Solid build and speaks fluent MIDI, USB midi, CV and more. I use several sequencers sometimes and this is a keeper. I hope the new model gives us more lights and soft led switchs...the CV units share data as well so the MIDI and CV together is a wet dream.
wow! what a review! thanks a lot!!!
Great, informative video as usual.
Yep, it sounds as good as I was hoping it would. Wish they were on the market a bit sooner!
The best demos , second to none in my opinion.
Thing I noticed most is this is one of the few synthesizers that's gotten a 1/2 hour play after the review. Very interesting synth for live play.
I would like more channels like yours, ser !
Superb stuff. As with the upcoming Wavestate SE, I'll await the full size 61 keys version, with velocity & aftertouch.
if the Modwave sells enough first, and I think it might
Opsix is the one that may not get a higher-build-quality SE version 👍
@@Jason75913 that's interesting, as if i remember correctly, the OpSix prototype pics that originally did the rounds over a year ago were of a 61 keys unit.
@Korg: Please, please make Desktop versions of your lovely new digital Synth's. I really do not need more Keys (and especially no bad quality keys ...).
I believe that I am far from alone with this wish. I would buy them all!
They're going to be available in May!
Glad you like it!
This adds interesting sounds to an already crowded palette of wonderful sounds or us it as a decent starting place!
Get one as it is a very useful audio design tool.
You deserve way more likes, especially from 10,000 views. Thanks for your vids loopop!
It's the spiritual successor to one of my favorite synths of all time, the Korg DW-8000. I'm buying it.
The DW8000 is also one of my favourite synths of all time and I'm hoping that Korg actually release a plug in version of it one day.
@@madness8556 that would be cool! Nothing like the real thing though :)
Did I hear correctly, 32 voice poly + bi-timbral? Great video as always, something about knowing what to expect from a loopop presentation, always consistent and will do the justice needed to understand a synth.
Thanks! And yes 32 voice bi timbral
I, in a state of weakness that lasted over a week, bought the Modwave and Wavestate from Guitar Center for a really good deal. Thank you Loopop, you are amonst many things the greatest synth salesman on earth.
ummm thanks, I think? I really try and describe what these things do in the calmest and non-sales-voice tone I can
@@loopop That's exactly why. Also your talent cannot be overstated. I really enjoy your channel. 👍🖖🤙
Thanks for the shout out at 25:22! 😃
where? when? what did I miss :) subliminal?
Korg has some interesting sounds which I like. I don’t have any Korgs, and I’m hoping they might release this or the wavestate in a desktop form factor.
It's only a matter of time.
Desktop version for all three would be awesome
Knowing Korg they will make a desktop version that is not rack mounted.
Why ?
Terrible marketing.
As ever a really good review. I would perhaps have liked to hear a few more raw wavetables, but where to start and where to stop. I know! Btw. it's not yet listed on your website. :) Thanks for doing these reviews and tutorials.
Korg is killing it, as are you good sir @loopop
I'll be patiently waiting for September! :-)
Hoping for an SE version soon. It's not that I object to the key count it's just that I need to retire my non-velocity sensitive DX27 as my main full-size keyboarded synth so a 61-key Modwave would meet that need.
I've never really been turned on by Korgs, but some of the sounds this is capable of making are incredible.
Novation and Sequentials new baby gonna be a monster we heard!
@@TheSynthZone I hope so, I have a space on my rack above the Summit for whatever they come up with
The Korg Modwave sounds great!
Let the Hydrasynth refunds begin lol.
Wow! This looks like something I might actually want. The Wavestate wasn't quite in my comfort zone, but this one has entered through a side door... Oh, and that Kaoss Physics feature is almost *exactly* the same as something I was planning to code for VCV Rack. It's like they were reading my notes over my shoulder :) Really pleased to see someone doing that stuff! Well done, Korg.
Would love to see that in VCV!
@@loopop I should probably mention that it's not a short-term project! I've designed it but not coded it, and I've not coded for VCV before. However, it's on my list :)
These new Korg synths are so deep
I love my Mnilogue XD, I want one of these now.
Thank you for the great video!!!
"this is a wavetableee"
Great video! I learned a lot of tips 😊
Incredible.. if i got a lot of money then i would buy Waldorf synths, i dont, so this seems to do all the work and maybe more than all the other expencieve synths …again a superb rewiev from loopop :) Thanks :)
I pay a Q alongside the Korg units wavestate and modwave, all three say a lot , even with a half dozen analogs ..IF you do a few house keeping tasks. The problem is fitting in the beats, vocals, and making something you may be proud of in 20 years...check out Tangerine Dream's numbers compared to many others. It is self expression that counts. It took me years to get my gear and reviews warned me away from the bad stuff. I love a good review!
Wow, 55:24 really caught my attention. I didn't know the Modwave could be so harsh and grungy.
Excellent Demonstration as always. All I can add is that "I am sooooooooo glad I just got myself a Wavestate". For me it was just the correct choice. This might be perfect for another Musician. As with all Synth users, the sky is the limit and perhaps this might be a nice companion for the Wavestate. I believe that I would go the Analog route on any future Synth additions.Just my 2 cents.Peace-
What is it that you favor about the Wavestate?
@@jaydekaytv Gary Oldman screams - "eeeeevrythiiiing"
@@jaydekaytv the wavestate is with the latest update 2.0 (librarian/editor/user samples) an incredible machine. and the modwave continues these awesome possibilities with wavetable besides wavesequencing. these are not really mainsysnths with 37 keys, but very useful and versatile helpers for analog companions like pro-/mini-/monologue, ph'ty, sub, gr'ma, matr'ch etc.
unfortunately, the 80s fm synthesis is not quite my case, so I will certainly buy the opsix at a later date for his functionality beyond fm. i would prefer this formfactor for real korg analog duo-/paraphonic monster besides my logues, something modern between monopoly, odyssey and minimoog, moog subsequent, and instead another copy of multiengine more focus on multitimbral, osc/lfos.
@@iosyn5896 well said, minilogue xd is a keeper for sure
I have both and love what they can do together
Late to the party with this one. Impeccable, unbiased review as always. This is what CZcams is made for
And cat videos.
I got my Modwave a few hours ago, found it for 320eur if you can believe. My jaw keeps dropping since I've turned it on, this synth is a whole world of sounds. Similar to Serum in many ways but even more powerful, this is pure love at first sound
This thing can generate some seriously ominous to downright goose-bump inducing evil sounds. I'm impressed.
I personally dont care for some of the sounds modwave can make, but the beauty is inside there besides the grungy beast! That defines flexible for me.
Performance from John Malletkovich through Juicy Drive Lead from 56:56 is just too funny. Thank you. 🤣
Cheers for 'the best' youtube review on this. I sold my Wavestate in anticipation for this synth. Loved jamming and playing around on the Wavestate, this seems the same. But I did find that it sat weirdly with my other synths in a mix. Maybe a bit to metallic? Idk it just didn't get along. Standalone though, awesome fun.
I have to agree that Korg has been on fire. From Gadget 2 to Minilogue XD to this Modwave, Korg is battling 1000! I must add that you, my friend are battling a very close 900.98!
Every one of my last 5 or 6 synth buys have been a decision made after one of your video reviews. Did I say that’s been since last December? Let’s see: Behringer Pro One, Behringer Model D, Korg Minilogue XD, Behringer TD-3, Arturia Keystep Pro, Arturia Microfreak, Novation Circuit Tracks, Novation Circuit Rhythm, Korg NTS-1, Korg Modwave, and UNO Synth Pro. Not to mention how many tricks I’ve stashed in my “trick-bag” thanks to your “ever expanding book”. I have an attraction to Korg since my first synth in 1984 was a Korg Poly 800.
Just saying thanks for the education and putting the pro level presentation on your work. Very well done. Keep up the great work, I appreciate you.
My friends call me JC.
Oh, and I ordered Plinky, but as you well know, I’ll be waiting for that one for a while.
Thanks very much for your support and for taking the time to write!
Hi you are perfectly in the right as far as synths are concerned. On another hand the workstation machines mine does not appear very coherent on a marketing point of view. Kronos Kross Nautilus Krome I do not see the same vision strength
Use to have a DW8000 wishing I had more hands on adjusting. I need this
Excellent demo!
The harshness of this Synth kinda reminds me of my Mono Evolver !
I love wavetable hybrids (just got a Hydrasynth) but the Evolver series is in a different class, especially the PolyEvolver
simply thanks 😊
Perfect video.
That OC integration is a really great feature! Does OpSix have that? Those two would be great to add to my studio for sure. I'm on the cusp of finding out if I get a new job in a new career and if I get that, I'm getting a lot of new equipment. I'm focusing on expanding my modular but if any standalone keyboards interest me, it's this and OpSix... And MatrixBrute and, if Desktops count, Waldorf Iridium. But still, out of all non-modular synths in existence, it's got to be doing something right to be on a list of four. It's really cool how they've integrated samples with the wavetables, and I appreciate the polyphony after working in the modular arena for so long. Great review!
Ahh so this is why I got my Wavestate a couple months ago for such a deep discount. It's a win-win for me as I'd rather have the Wavestate than this but this looks amazing too!
I already have a Wavestate and OpSix but still fancy one of these too...
They're like Pokémon. Gotta catch em all..
Hope the Drumlogue video isn’t too far behind!
Who's got one of those??
that’s the one I’m waiting on too! so much exciting/fun stuff coming out just now!
this plus that equals great
The only way I’m buying that if they have wavestate and Modwave sounds built in
@@JGW-im3nf The Drumlogue is going to be different tech to the Modwave and Wavestate. It will be a mix of analog, Multi Engine, and samples. It is like a drum machine in the same tech family as the Minilogue XD and Prologue.
I'm getting it
Cool soundscapes
I really hope this series comes out in desktop form eventually....
Same. I really want one of these but hate having attached keyboards. IDK if I want to wait for something that potentially might not happen either though
Bump
They have said numerous times, they never will do modules again for any smaller platform. They simply don't sell and they got burned by the mini-series. Which massively undersold. Thats unacceptable post pandemic as a risk. People will be lucky if they manage to get the SE editions out.
You can probably take a screw driver and a hacksaw to it and 'table top' it... Assuming the sound boards don't go too far below the keyboard.
I also wish uli's gang released the poly D as a module. I really hate this small keyboard trend. I get why they do it as a compromise but for someone with an already good controller it's just redundant and takes up space.
I really like this show👍
A great synth, I’ve not seen a demo that does it justice!
The comment section awaits your demo, feel free to link to it
@@loopop it’s not a criticism… your reviews are my go to on any new gear I am just expressing how blown away by this synth I am the deeper I go… to demo everything would take days 😁👍
Have been using a Korg Triton for ages and looking to get something new. Played a Prologue 16 at the shop, had a blast. Found this, the wavestate & optix... My mind is now blown lol I think I need to sit down and think for a while. Any thoughts people? For a guy who loves 80s sounds what would you suggest? Also killer videos on all these by the way! Great channel!
In sample mode, it would be nice to be able to use the position (e.g. sample start), blend (e.g. loop start), morph (e.g. loop end) and morph type (e.g. loop type) knobs for *something*. There may already be plans for other functions, I am just trying to get more out of the ModWave, because I LOVE IT!
Good suggestion. Drop it to Korg.
About the OSC SAMPLES mode...this is something I figured out just last night which is not obvious at first, so I'd like to share this for any new Modwave users. When you use the drum/perc samples, you'll surely want to repitch them and you absolutely can. On the right side of FILTER section press the PITCH button and in the Osc Pitch you can change Octave, Tune and Transpose to repitch. Hope this helps anyone who scratched their heads over it as I did for weeks, cheers! 🙂
1:09:57 Stratosphere demo - very similar to a sound I've heard on JMJ's "The Concerts in China" double album!
I waited so long for this... Sob
Nice review and demo! Sounds impressive. Can I ask, how would you compare it overall to the Hydra?
Ah! Just read your pros and cons list. Thank you.
The 2GB of samples really takes this to the next level for me. I love layering musically harsh wavetables with acoustic instruments like drum hits and vocal snippets.
I wish you could load your own samples.
