  • Growing potatoes is easy, but everyone seems to follow the same planting and growing advice. In this video I show my way of planting potatoes deep in pots as well as some of the initial results.

    I normally plant potatoes in 18 gallon plastic tubs and used to add soil as they grow up... But this year.. I planted them all the way down and filled soil to the top. And there were no signs for growth for almost 3 weeks. I was about to dig them after 2 weeks and then I came across this video and it helped. It took 3 weeks for them to reach to the top but it also helped to plant them in early Feb (before the last day of frost).

      Oh nice! I'm so glad this video helped you out and kept you from digging up your potatoes early. I hope you manage to get a bumper crop and thanks for taking the time to leave me a comment 🌻

      It makes such a difference, I must say! It has just turned winter here where I am and I have just planted another batch. Makes the hunger gap so much smaller come late winter 🌻

      That would absolutely amazing if it turns your tables into big harvests. I am 🤞 it does!

    Will the stem be able to push its way up all to the top of the container past all that soil?

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney  Před rokem

      Hey David, good question! Yip, in the video you could see the tips sticking out and those grew all the way from the bottom and sent out new roots and tubers all along the stem 🌻

    The whole hilling business turned me off this year, so, I buried them deep and covered it up and called it a day-I'm here wondering if I killed them but your video helped me clarify that. Thank you!

      I'm so glad you stumbled across my video and that it gave you some insight. I hope it works for you and that you get a really great harvest!
      My only advice is patience as they can take quite a bit of time to work their way to the surface if you plant them really deep, but they will make it - just remember how deep to dig to make sure you harvest them all come harvest time 😀 🌻

    New to you. But yeah seen ppl bury them deep. Or say bury your potatoes deep so no need to hill.

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney  Před rokem

      Thanks and glad to have 'met'. Yeah there are a few different reasons for planting deep, including all the reasons you mentioned. For me, and it might because of the variety, I find I get extra potatoes growing along the stem, but yes I think the No. 1 reason would be to avoid hilling 🌻

    So this time we have tried planting in a cardboard box and so far they the best looking plants we have had. Will let u know once we harvest how well it produces

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney  Před 2 lety

      Amazing! 🌱 So, out of interest sake, did you plant the potatoes shallow with the aim of mounding up or deep? Would love to know how the cardboard box planting goes

    • @amyjanegardner9908
      @amyjanegardner9908 Před 2 lety +1

      @@MySustainabilityJourney we planted about 30cm to 40cms deep and have let it grow. The plants are now about a meter tall so was thinking or mounding up now

      @@amyjanegardner9908 amazing, so that is nice and deep and sounds like really strong growth. Keep constant moisture and you should get a bumper crop! Looking forward to hearing about the results 🌱

    very interesting technique. so no mounding up. how do you know when the new potatoes are ready to dig up?

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Tracy, thanks for your comment 😁
      Yip, no mounding at all as the potatoes are growing quite deep with more than enough space to swell, meaning they don't get pushed up to the top.
      The signs when they are ready are the same as normal planting, so as soon as the plant and main stems start turning brown and dieing off 🌱

      @@MySustainabilityJourney I''m definitely going to give your pot approach a try now in these hot summer days. I've also been looking at different ways of building a bug and bee hotel. Have you tried anything like that before?

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney  Před 2 lety

      @@tracybailey680 ah amazing! Ease let me know how it goes for you? I'll definitely be doing a harvest video so you can see my single potato harvest from this video as reference, but would love to you know how you find it.
      In terms of the bug hotels, I actually don't do anything because I have so many bugs and bees. My big reason for not actively creating bug homes is snakes. We have cobra's and puffies and don't want anything they might like.
      I have some bee hotels I tried but never got any inhabitants. That being said I do see a lot of different solitary bees so they must be somewhere 😁🐝

      @tracybailey680 Před 2 lety

      @@MySustainabilityJourney ah, important point about the puffies and cobras. they're aplenty around here too (Napier). i've already got to keep all eyes open around the compost heap! i asked because i got the impression it might be a bit of a fad. i also have quite a lot of bugs and bees and i guess the wilder the place gets, the more accommodation there'll be(e) 😊
      i'll be keeping an eye open for your potato harvest video too

    That all depends of whether the potato variety is determinate or indeterminate. determinate varieties will only produce on one level.

    Do you add the soil as the plant grows? Or just cover the potato as it sprouts?

    • @MySustainabilityJourney
      @MySustainabilityJourney  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Brigitta, good question! When you put the potato down you fill the entire pot with soil in 1 go. It takes quite long for the plant to break through the soil (mine took 3 weeks) but then you have potato plant stems that are covered in roots all the way up 🌱
