WHATS THE CLUNCKING IN THE STEERING 05 MALIBU ELECTRIC STEERING

  • I've noticed that most of the new GM Malibu's, G 6's and saturn Ions that use electric steering have a noticeable clunk when the vehicle is not moving and you turn the steering wheel from side to side just a few inches. This video shows just one possible cause for the clunking noise.

    there is also a PI bulletin about the grease drying out in the gears of the power assist motor. so what you're hearing could be the backlash between the motor and the steering column.

    The yolk in the rack is worn. It's made with Teflon. It wears out. Look at cardone on CZcams bout it.

    i have a 05 malibu ls v6 120 k miles always serviced and gives me not one problem except it rides rough and sometimes it sounds like a rattling coming from the steering wheel when going over bumps , i had the famous clunk when turning issue and had the dealer replace the i shaft a long time ago and issue never returned ,it is not unbearable but annoying i was told it could be the surge tank which when i checked it is loose due to the way they attach it to th vehicle any thoughts? thank you

  • @BAXMAN68
    @BAXMAN68 Před 12 lety

    In my experience the surge tank has not been an issue. It may seem loose but will not cause your concern. The I-Shaft could be a problem(even though it was replaced, they still fail). The sway bar links are another notorious problem with this car line. Grab the sway bar and move it up and down while watching the sway bar end, if you see it "pop" replace you links. Not fun with the mileage you have. You WILL need heat.

    My experience on this is the fact that the strut upper bearing fails. Check them by having someone rock the steering wheel and look at the top of the strut in the engine compartment you will see the upper nut moving back and forth.Either replace the upper bearing or the whole strut with the ready strut kits. I took my vehicles to several mechanics and also the dealer numerous times and they just tell me my tires are out of balance. I got pissed and found the problem on my first car 1998 Bonneville ssei. It would make clunking noises when steering or hitting potholes or uneven surfaces. My second car the vue had brand new strut kits installed and the bearing were shot after 3 years. Sombody should be sued because this is a major problem using inferior bearings that can compromise your car steering and nobody seems to be able to properly diagnose this problem.

    I also have an 05 Malibu with the 2.2L...I have an issue where the idle dips down then up and down again at times...just when the car is stopped at low idle. Do you know what could cause this and what I can try to fix it? TPS? IAC Valve? Throttle cable?

    stupid Chevrolets. I have an 05 Malibu classic/base model. cost more for maintenance than the initial cost of the car. Stupid electronic steering sucks about three time Ive got a message no power steering, and have had to wrestle it to the side of the road and turn off and on, on the engine, fortunately when it comes time to replace the rack and pinion, it won't be a labour intensive without the normal hydraulic steering system! Idk haha. I'm sensing my knuckles will be sore at the end of the day with my list of repairs. I think if you own a Chevrolet, General motors should give you a free lease on a shop with a lift!

  • @BAXMAN68
    @BAXMAN68 Před 12 lety +2

    The other most common problem is the steering column. Drive the vehicle in a sweeping turn on a loose or bumpy surface and you should not hear the noise, let go of the wheel and you should hear the noise. Now remove the EPS fuse in the underhood fuse box and do the sweeping turn again, if you hear the noise noise without releasing the wheel the noise is the backlash between the P.S. assist gears and the column gears inside the steering column. At this point the column needs rplacement.

    wait a minute, the intermediate shaft does not "flex" think about it. the intermediate shaft goes from the rack to the steering wheel, the rack is bolted to the frame or sub frame, so how can the intermediate shaft flex or go in and out when going over a bump. the clunk from side to side now that is the intermediate shaft.

  • @DJR5280
    @DJR5280 Před 12 lety

    yeah i have been at it for a while trying to figure out the problem,car hits bumps really hard and sounds like it is going to fall apart replaced struts and strut mounts and no difference ,next step is the dealer ship inspection for 60 $ or trade it in for a bmw ,audi or mercedes benz ,sucks because i think the malibu over all was very reliable

    ok I have a question about 2 weeks ago I was at a red light in a two lane there was a car in front of me there was a cement block under the car in front of me which I couldn't see when the light turned green I saw it when the car moved I couldn't move over because there was a curb on passenger side and car in other I rolled staight over it and heard a scrape sound..next day and thereon my car sounded loud as hell when I drove it you can hear me around the corner took it to a local repair he said it was my flex rod I said is that the cause of it sounding loud and slowing in gear when I try to get at a high speed answer was yes and is charging 138.00..now I remember just some moths ago I had a problem where my speed wouldn't pick up when I tried to go a faster speed it would stall..and it was some rods where he had to cut them in half because people don't buy them anymore because there expansive am I being cheated

    It's the knuckles/joints in the steering shaft making the clucking.

      There was a recall on the 08 Malibu. Took to dealership the replaced a sensor inside steering wheel. I get the car back there are bolts and clips, tools on the floor the steering is out of alignment and the clunking noise is 10 times worse. Of course I complain they say they never got into the steering (lies) I told the they fix it or we go to court. Long story short a week later they fixed it. Depending on where the noise is inside the steering things can be tightened which was the problem. The dealership didn't put a bolt back when they did they tightened everything so now the steering is perfect. Good luck

    That play was not designed into the rack and pinion. It was just poorly manufactured. Unfortunetly the steering I-Shaft will give you the EXACT same symptoms as you found in the rack. And like jwplater stated: the steering column is another common problem. The Z body cars are a nightmare for front end clunks and rattles. In my opinion a total piece of manufaturing junk. By the way, I have been a GM tech for the last 18 years and have worked on more of these cars than I have cared to.

    Just a heads up folks I am experiancing this on my chevy equonox. What he's describing fits perfectly with the issue I'm having. When im parked and I rock the steering wheel side to side it pops. It's messed up these billion dollar car companies ignore on going well known issues on there vehicles and continue releasing new ones with no fix. My Equinox has 40k miles and has had a timing chain, fuel pump, camshaft replacement. The timing chains on the ecotec 4 cylinders have been notoriously bad for the last decade. I'm also experiancing lurching when I'm stopped with my foot on the break. Happens more frequently when I have the Ac on. It will literally slightly nudge. That's been a known issue for Chevys for over 10 years. Get your crap together gm stuff like this makes me lose all trust in you.
