When I take photos of a vintage cars , I try to take them during late afternoon or early evenings. I just love the way the sun and shadows look when I paint it on canvas.
This is SO beautiful!! I love the background and definitely want to be doing this type of work. The planning is essential. I'm not the most experienced painter, but I have found that to be true every time. Thank you so much for sharing your process!!
That sounds like good advice. I quite often start painting with only a basic idea of what I want and make up elements as I go- and it leads to the exact frustrations you describe. I hadn't even identified this as a problem until you mentioned it. Case in point my current WIP. I wanted to do a souk type scene, set in the past. I found a reference of Kairouan's souk (in Tunisia) from the late 19th Century and started, adding and changing as I painted. And I am on my fourth (almost complete) repaint now. If I had taken this advice beforehand it would have gone a lot smoother. And the piece- which I think is good- would have been a lot better. So far your channel is turning out to be the most helpful painting channel I've seen. A part of that might be where I am at on my journey, but mostly it is because you give advice that is relatable and understandable and best of all, actually useful. Thank you for that!
What an immensely kind comment, thank you so much for sharing this and for the compliment. I find that trying to make heads or tales of my experience and putting that into words helps me so much in my own practice -- I may not even have come to this realization if I hadn't been thinking about how to articulate my experience for this video. I am SO glad that this and other videos are helping you, and I can't wait to share more. :D Thank you for being such a wonderful supporter, it really means the world. :)
Thank you for reminding me of the importance of planning! I tend to want to just pick up a brush and paint. But there's so much that needs to be done first in order to create a successful painting.
Well done first of all with your method of teaching and communicating. I started painting officially in October 2020 without any formal teaching or direction. I have relied on You Tube and books to learn and have made some great progress using what’s out there. But what I realized after watching this is that the people I had primarily learned from didn’t discuss the importance of finding the right reference image and how to build your composition. You have articulated quite expertly the importance of these 2 components of creating a good painting and I am excited to apply this going forward and see how this impacts my work. Well done. Keep these coming!
Is there a way we can talk on the phone or online I need to discuss some things but I am disabled and it's hard for me to type and get across my ideas or problems? Please help

Planning proportions so essential! Once you start its the difference between a project worth finishing and one that needs too much correction

I liked your first background just as much! Both seem beautiful to me .

Thank you, Chelsea. This was extremely helpful. This was my second time watching and things may be cementing. Off to my exercises!
Wonderful! I'm so glad it was helpful. I hope the exercises treat you very well! I can't wait to hear how you fare. :)
I really like how you changed the background. The first background was distracting from the subject. The final background was perfect.
Thanks for a Very important lesson.
Great advice
Hi Chelsea,
What photo shop program do you recommend, many thanks Ray
Holding the back end of the brush i have less control. Make a lot of frustrating wrong strokes. I guess just practice???
