"Your guns are shooting"
"No, it's the bastard English..."
Love that line!
It's tricky to explain as it is very much a cultural joke but basically, to a lot of people, particularly foreigners, English and British means the same thing; which it isn't. An example of this is where in the media when tennis player Andy Murray wins a match he's the plucky Brit, if he loses one he's the unlucky Scot. Many members of the home nations other than England, definitely feel as though there is a bias towards England in British institutions. This is quite understandable as many of them are based in London.
So, in retaliation, if anything is bad then it is 'English' rather than British. Which distances them from it completely.
In this case those soldiers were Scottish hence: they're not our guns they're the English guns. As an English person I can say that line makes me laugh every time. The English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish all have their differences and we love to make fun of each other but we always pull together when we need to. Hope that helps!
+Paul Looney hiya, I don't think I've got anything wrong per se, although I'm certainly guilty of putting things in a massively positive light! Of course it's true that many people have a deep resentment towards 'the British', however you care to define it, and not just the Irish. Your point is entirely valid. I just didn't feel that going into that much detail would help to answer the question posed by the gentleman above; namely why that joke is funny.
@@sarahreed9833 I am very convinced that at least some of the Scottish see that a bit differently and do not consider themselves (voluntary) Brits. We will see what happens after the BREXIT
@@ZardozCologne and there you go Brits
In reality, the Cameronians and the London Scottish fired on the bloody Jerries when they tried to come over.
"Your guns are shooting?"
"No it's the bastard English, No us"
great line
"Its us theyre shooting at" cracked me up hahah
Lol
'Thanks very much mate and, give my love to the Kaiser' I fucking love that line.
He just loved the picklehaube
Time to book it lads
WWI 1914: Europe's Civil War
If only it had ended that Christmas...before it de-evolved into a senseless war of attrition and an actual world war.
Amen.
Do you know when the war will end?
"After our spring offensive I should think"
Even though they didn't shoot at each other, that German officer went home feeling pretty burned.
Yeah but I bet the Brit officer literally got burned in that Spring offensive...
Quite possibly
pretty much lol
The German officer looked down looking for his luger.
soldiers banter all with the best intentions
'How's the kaiser?' LOOL
J M the German’s reaction was funnier like”eh u know doing kaiser things like getting us all killed no big deal”
One of my favorite actual events ever. THIS is humanity.
This is what Christmas is all about
Yes, every christmas when i go home to my family, I am effectively fraternising with my enemies.
Le Lenny that was Christmas eve on Christmas some or the British fucked up and killed them when the gemans asked if the were still good. it shows you there's bad on both sides
Definitely agree, no Santa just peace with all no fighting
What? Drinkin' schnaps and bein' shot at?
What a beautiful moment in history. This is why I don't read very much fic tion. Who could write stuff like this? And IT REALLY HAPPENED!
One of my favorite stories EVER! What a beautiful display of actual humanity. Something the powers that be will forever try to distort and destroy.
Brave soldiers on all sides.Led by donkeys
Hi John I saw your post led by donkeys na more like idiots with no brains Between there ears
John Turner ughm ughm Douglas haig
The juden were responsible
Officers died frequently, those donkeys led the charges
Been watching Blackadder?
That point when we realise that we are all the same. Sadly we never learn it until it is too late.
If only it ended just that way we probably wouldn't have to suffer all those horrors till this day...
TweekHavingaBadDay everyone wanted it to end that way. I always hope for a informal surrender. No orangized meeting or formal salutes. just a shake of hands and hugs with tears of the guys realizing "what have we been wasting for this war"
I dont think so. There would have been other wars instead.
amazing the power of christmas is
"Hey Tommy! :D" "Hey Fritz! :D"
Так должны поступать люди всегда. Не убивать друг друга ради своих господ, а дарить друг другу подарки, любовь и оставаться друзьями, а не становится врагами.
"If war wasn't so terrible we'd grow to fond of it"- Abraham Lincoln.
too*
General Robert E. Lee said that, not Abraham Lincoln. ;-)
@@galoon Yep
Idk why my anxiety rises up when this thing happens,I mean I know it's a happy time but I'm just worried one of them will pull the trigger
@TalonMercenary From what I've read, the men were rotated regularly anyway. So, the guys who took part in the truce were moved to the rear or one of the secondary trenches and new troops - with no happy memories of the enemy - were brought in. Thus, the fighting continued. They also issued warning and ordered artillery bombardments before Christmas 1915 to make sure it did not happen again.
Despicable
That movie poster, shown here at beginning of this video, is something straight out of the mind of a pure GENIUS: a lonely, walking general among thousands of crosses!
Stunning!
Big thx x uploading by the way! Awesome movie!
+2serveand2protect Aggred it is stunning and sad. All theese men.
Without their commanders they're just young men...
1915 on Christmas Day
On the western front the guns all died away
And lying in the mud on bags of sand
We heard a German sing from no man's land
He had tenor voice so pure and true
The words were strange but every note we knew
Soaring or the living dead and dammed
The German sang of peace from no man's land
They left their trenches and we left ours
Beneath tin hats smiles bloomed like wild flowers
With photos, cigarettes, and pots of wine
We built a soldier's truce on the front line
Their singer was a lad of twenty one
We begged another song before the dawn
And sitting in the mud and blood and fear
He sang again the song all longed to hear
Silent night, no cannons roar
A King is born of peace for evermore
All's calm, all's bright
All brothers hand in hand
In 19 and 15 in no man's land
And in the morning all the guns boomed in the rain
And we killed them and they killed us again
With Bullet, Bomb, Bayonet, Gas, and Flame,
And neither we nor they at all to blame.
There was heavy fighting right throughout the day,
for one nights peace we Bloodily did pay.
At night they charged we fought them hand to hand
And I killed the boy that sang in no man's land
Silent night no cannons roar
A King is born of peace for evermore
All's calm, all's bright
All brothers hand in hand
And that young soldier sings
And the song of peace still rings
Though the captains and all the kings
Built no man's land
Sleep in heavenly peace
1914*
The motorbike and girlfriend story the German related is actually true. An English officer serving in the Scots Guards was the one he told it to (just as here, an Englishman amongst scots)
Just goes to show what a ridiculous state war is.
A well-done reenactment. It felt more real than others I have seen.
Imagine what a beautiful world this would be if the spirit of Christmas was kept each and every day of the year…
Peace on earth, goodwill towards men...
what a friend we have in jesus...
Kingmanification Athiests still celebrate Christmas, we don't go to church or any of that, but we give gifts and spend time together. Same thing.
What a pathetically dumb comment.
Silvicat Green Germans (there commen culture) is not atheisemcjhsifjcjvm shit whatever you know you said it but I think there Christian (and just in case athism is not beliving in anything)
Comrade Silvicat We don't need God to give and spread joy and love
Amen.
How cud they celebrate and sing together, then fight and blow each other to bits the next day. It is so tragic. Total obedience to authority.
This shows, that it is the goverments who fight each other and not people.
this is most wonderful happen on earth.its more wonderful than the seven wonders of the world.its havenly records
❤❤❤
Could have made great friendships ......
who knows maybe after the war they all reunited sometime later.
This showed that even in war both enemies were still full of the Christmas spirit
Thanks very much mate and give my love to the kaiser haha love it!
'Do you know when the war will end'
'After our spring offensive i should think'
i couldn't help but laugh at that xD
Same haha it was a good return sentence.
"Hello Tommy" Me: ??? Thats my name

Gotta love the Scots
This made my tears have tears
“It’s us they’re shooting at” is my personal favourite line

Ein geniales Video! Warum kann der Mensch nicht lernen?

***** 'Thank You/ Danke' - From an Englishman
***** Ja, es ist ein wunderbar Video. Machen mir denken zur Soldaten huete.
Gute Frage! Gott helfe uns allen, wir sind nur Menschen. Ein frohes Weihnachtsfest für Sie aus South Carolina!

I cried...
The spikes on the helmets were actually for channeling away slashes of cutting weapons...
practical and cool what more could you want
This scene made even men cry in tears.
The song the Germans don’t like.
My Grandfather served in France from 1915. He would sit me on his knee and sing one of the popular songs. Told me that every time they sang it, the Germans would send a shell over. I keep listening to the songs on these clips, trying to remember which one, driving me mad!
Arti squad:" WTF is going on!? A party in NML!? Rain fire on them!"
@remeclerk
"there are lots of books saying that if all along the front this would have happened then the war would have been truly over"
It is a nice thought but the books are wrong. The Christmas truce was between the regular armies of 1914 who, in the words of Robert Graves, regarded the matter as an exchange of courtesies between professional soldiers. The no holds barred battles of 1916 - 1918 were fought largely by volunteers.
Volunteers and conscripts. The Germans were, of course, all conscripts.
This is brilliant aha!
@tescowath2003 They are the same race...just different languages and country!
I always felt like good guy and bad guy wasn't super clear in WW1.
It wasn't most of the time. Thou one could say the comon soldiers were the good guys and the generals the bad guys.
while Germany bore the mark for their 1st breaking a border, France and Russia were playing the biggest game of "Im not touching you" in history by amassing at their borders with look and want to invade and crush Germany.
Those were some really interesting and intellectual comments and then how the helmets compare and i agree with the arguments quoting Christianity as improving equality but it was still pretty slow progress and i like the Germans helmets too they are cool
No more brothers war.
there are lots of books saying that if all along the front this would have happened then the war would have been truly over
friend. ship.forever..
5:47 I LOVE THAT GUY
Millions of Europeans have killed each other on countless battlefields for years upon years, for people to realize that it's better to cooperate and face the world and the future, as one Europe united in diversity and peace! Better late than never...
Imagine if all these soldiers linked ul and turned on theyre governments how powerful would that have been
This is why war is pointless, we are all human it dosen’t matter if you are german, british, canadian, austrian, american, turkish or australian this proves that they are all just humans no different from each other. It is insane that none of the leaders tried to make peace out of this.
Pointless definitely but it is a natural condition of mankind and concomitant to civilization. Better get used to it because it's never going away.
"dont believe that man..its us they're shooting at" xD
it was crismas have a heart
@JordoF6 Most of the British soldiers in this scene are Scottish with about three Englishmen. The historical reason for this is that until after the Second World War, regiments were divided according to where you came from, so the Welsh, English and Irish would be in other parts of the trenches, but most officers were English (Partly due to the large population compared to the rest of the UK, and partly due to more people able to afford higher education in southern England at the time).
The regimental system was never as partitioned by regions as that. Men served, and were cross-posted, all over the place.
as a russian i say that i could not shoot at them again because these are not enemies... war is the dumbest things human ever did...
What did the guy said in 1:09??? 'Oh ke tak'? or something???
He is saying 'Ta' which is a way of saying thank you. My grandmother was Scottish and she and my mum would always say 'ta' instead of thank you. As to the first part, its just accchh, which is simply an exclamation of emotion, like wow or a grunt of pleasure at receiving something hot on a cold day.
Cedric Suriapraja 'Ta' = Thank You
apart from the idiotic comment....this scene is truly a profound moment....Christian men, from both sides, and without official orders, calling a truce on Christmas day....appriensive at first...only to find, that they are just the same people..just different uniforms...again. very profound scene, in a great all round film...
Herzlichen Glückwunsch an die Offiziere !
Good....
@SKlegomovies On other parts of the front the fight was going on left and right...and the artillery a few Kilometers behind the front didn't something about the happenings.....
Hey i need help here any one seen the animated version of this event? where they go and play a game of soccer??? i realy wants to know whats called as it is the greatest known event in history.. thanks beforehand
This reminds me of Joyeux Noel, is this the same truce?
yes...........couse it is the only sponateous truce in worldwide wars
There is a wonderrfull song about this by Mike Harding, called christmas eve 1914, listen then let me know, made me a grown man weep. Also a wonderfull ww2 story called 'the shepherd' its a book of short stories...regards and PEACE to all everywhere-p.s tks for the comments sent my way
@kopynd
The British and German people are rather civilised and honest. I have lived in Germany and England and I am amazed at the similarities between the races . Sadly they both have extremists who know little or nothing about history, yet they rant and rave about things they neither know or understand. It will never change!
We are all Germanic tribes anyway, those of us who are British or German.
Brave soldiers…
I'll drink to this! :)
what does the sad face mean?
3:50 Hello Tommy!
A wonderful and unique anti-war film--actively surpressed and under advertised in the US because of the already strong opposition to the Vietnam war at that time. For the same reasons, when Hitler grabbed power in 1933, he banned that other great anti-war film, 'All quiet on the Western front'. Cannon fodder ? you bet !
Wow, I never knew that. Especially the urine part
Curiosity and respect, civilised behaviour and good manners bring people together. Then the political realities drive them apart. No fratanising with the enemy. I wonder if this happens during the War on Terror? Christmas is probably not the time. What about UN world peace day?
QUIERO LA PELICULA EN CASTELLANO LATINO.........PARA VERLA EN INTERNET.
0:31 Aye the meadow of picker dilly!
Are they scottish or canadians?
this army knows peace than their warmonger leaders..
imagine if this happened in pubg on christmas eve. 100 players meeting in one spot.
Schnapps? It's whiskey. YA!!
Minute Artillery hits: RUNNNNN!!!!!!!!
@turkzil I think you may have missed the point of this movie. As long as there is an "Other" for us to hate we'll never escape the cycle of war and the pointless deaths that come with it. Terrorism is the worst because it's just an idea. How do you even go to war against an idea?
A bit wrong but still really good
Imagine there is war and nobody goes there.
Then there is no war in the first place.
I wonder who really got up for first.... Was it Hans or was it John.... For a moment someone risked their own lifes to shake hands with the enemy....
It was the Germans.
In this case he'd have been called jock.
about 43
@ThatScottishGuy2010 Im sorry, my last comment wasnt that accurate as i thought. My apologize.
listen Carefully at 6; 15 and Hi is Right ,..
