    Love that line!

It's tricky to explain as it is very much a cultural joke but basically, to a lot of people, particularly foreigners, English and British means the same thing; which it isn't. An example of this is where in the media when tennis player Andy Murray wins a match he's the plucky Brit, if he loses one he's the unlucky Scot. Many members of the home nations other than England, definitely feel as though there is a bias towards England in British institutions. This is quite understandable as many of them are based in London.
So, in retaliation, if anything is bad then it is 'English' rather than British. Which distances them from it completely.
In this case those soldiers were Scottish hence: they're not our guns they're the English guns. As an English person I can say that line makes me laugh every time. The English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish all have their differences and we love to make fun of each other but we always pull together when we need to. Hope that helps!

+Paul Looney hiya, I don't think I've got anything wrong per se, although I'm certainly guilty of putting things in a massively positive light! Of course it's true that many people have a deep resentment towards 'the British', however you care to define it, and not just the Irish. Your point is entirely valid. I just didn't feel that going into that much detail would help to answer the question posed by the gentleman above; namely why that joke is funny.

@TalonMercenary From what I've read, the men were rotated regularly anyway. So, the guys who took part in the truce were moved to the rear or one of the secondary trenches and new troops - with no happy memories of the enemy - were brought in. Thus, the fighting continued. They also issued warning and ordered artillery bombardments before Christmas 1915 to make sure it did not happen again.

    1915 on Christmas Day
On the western front the guns all died away
And lying in the mud on bags of sand
We heard a German sing from no man's land
He had tenor voice so pure and true
The words were strange but every note we knew
Soaring or the living dead and dammed
The German sang of peace from no man's land
They left their trenches and we left ours
Beneath tin hats smiles bloomed like wild flowers
With photos, cigarettes, and pots of wine
We built a soldier's truce on the front line
Their singer was a lad of twenty one
We begged another song before the dawn
And sitting in the mud and blood and fear
He sang again the song all longed to hear
    Silent night, no cannons roar
A King is born of peace for evermore
    All's calm, all's bright
    All brothers hand in hand
In 19 and 15 in no man's land
And in the morning all the guns boomed in the rain
And we killed them and they killed us again
With Bullet, Bomb, Bayonet, Gas, and Flame,
And neither we nor they at all to blame.
There was heavy fighting right throughout the day,
for one nights peace we Bloodily did pay.
At night they charged we fought them hand to hand
And I killed the boy that sang in no man's land
    Silent night no cannons roar
A King is born of peace for evermore
    All's calm, all's bright
    All brothers hand in hand
    And that young soldier sings
And the song of peace still rings
Though the captains and all the kings
    Built no man's land
    Sleep in heavenly peace

It is a nice thought but the books are wrong. The Christmas truce was between the regular armies of 1914 who, in the words of Robert Graves, regarded the matter as an exchange of courtesies between professional soldiers. The no holds barred battles of 1916 - 1918 were fought largely by volunteers.

The historical reason for this is that until after the Second World War, regiments were divided according to where you came from, so the Welsh, English and Irish would be in other parts of the trenches, but most officers were English (Partly due to the large population compared to the rest of the UK, and partly due to more people able to afford higher education in southern England at the time).

A wonderful and unique anti-war film--actively surpressed and under advertised in the US because of the already strong opposition to the Vietnam war at that time. For the same reasons, when Hitler grabbed power in 1933, he banned that other great anti-war film, 'All quiet on the Western front'. Cannon fodder ? you bet !

Curiosity and respect, civilised behaviour and good manners bring people together. Then the political realities drive them apart. No fratanising with the enemy. I wonder if this happens during the War on Terror? Christmas is probably not the time. What about UN world peace day?

@turkzil I think you may have missed the point of this movie. As long as there is an "Other" for us to hate we'll never escape the cycle of war and the pointless deaths that come with it. Terrorism is the worst because it's just an idea. How do you even go to war against an idea?
