- The University of British Columbia is in the midst of creating a new-use plan, which could add 15,000 people to the region's population. But as Justin McElroy explains, the only people in the area elected by residents have no power over it.

I graduated from UBC last year. Though, I am proud of my alma mater, I can say they’re cash cows everything cost a fortune parking, residences, meal. It’s a mall not a university.
A luxury mall ..
So UBC = the new Brentwood or Oakridge mall . just kidding
More like ubc wants to double it's student tuition revenue on the backs of foreign borrowers
We desperately need to start instituting laws preventing universities from doing this.
I graduated from UBC in the 90s. Even then many of us were living in illegal suites because they kept building luxury housing on campus instead of looking after the students. Many decisions were made for the “city” UBC and not the university. It would be wise for the government to put accountability into the institution that bears the provinces name. And for the campus to stop sending me email asking for donations. I take the John Mulaney view 😉
Wow CBC forgot to shut off the comments like usual.
The comments are almost always enabled on the local CBC Vancouver channel. It's on the bigger CBC channels like The National and CBC News that the comments are always disabled.
The whimsical music is really annoying.
It's because they're mocking Canadians.
More democracy is probably good. Let's do that.
UBC stands for… U Bring Cash for a reason
99 year leases while having no government over site.... going to be big problems down the road... so who pays to fix roads water pipes ect.... ubc they own the land and run it... selling homes on leases like that should be illegal
It’s hilarious, UBC talks about sustainability all the time (and used it as excuse to raise tuition), yet they chose the most unsustainable growth ever: real estate development
Our university is running for an international students and it is not for canadian students anymore.
Funny how it was built on our parents and our tax dollars but it's not for us.
and forget about going to McGill or Concordia now that Canadian's who live outside of Quebec will have to pay the international tuition rate!
You do realize international students pay quadruple the tuition than you right? The problem is the waste of funding and greed from the board, not students who scraped everything they have to get here
@@mastersonogashira1796 and you do realize that they don't do any favour by paying that fees in to canada as they use healthcare systems. Hospital and transit system.housing and all other government services.also they work here and taking up canadian jobs and earn money as well.
@@shem4753 international student pays extra for health insurance and upass (transit) is mandatory for all students. Either you never went to ubc, or still have the impression from the last century. Plus, international students don’t even use transit, most of them live on campus. Stop being a nationalist zealot, that’s how they get you to support their ridiculous tuition and spending habit
2:17 "[...] where new homes are *_sold_* on 99-year *_leases"_* -- uhh, so which is it, a sale, or a lease?
Lease.
Lease
What a house of cards.
Thanks to UBC for being so accomodating to transracial students. I'm a Chinese man, but I self-identify as a Jamaican woman. UBC is very diverse and inclusive.
😂😅
😂😂😂
That’s because UBC is a mess.
Yeah but tuition keeps going up to deal with the therapists the teachers need after dealing with today's mentality ill children
That's awesome our PM identifies as black every Halloween and I really look up to him for his leadership.
I work at UBC as a technician . I have been there for over 3 years and have never met in person with any staff that works there. When you are there, you feel like a number in a sea of numbers. The focus on numbers makes me wonder, is it a school or a business? What does this then mean for the quality and integrity of the education?
Please remove the annoying music
It's because CBC is laughing at the average Canadian.
This gives me hope. I've been trying to acquire land to create a community of people who would like to build scarecrows with me, speak in tongues, and learn to ferment food. Bonfires too!
What about snake raising?
Will there be s’mores?
You have me sold on this land already
These NIMBY's should have absolutely no representation at UBC at all. The University was established long before they were there. UBC, as an institution, should have sole say about how it uses its own land.
These people moved into housing that UBC built, knowing all conditions of living there.
it is not like ' I do what I want' due to regulations
I went to UBC. Most of us lived in the legal suites because they were so busy building luxury housing on UBC land. The place is a farce. it needs accountability outside of itself.
UBC is not in Vancouver, though it is just adjacent to it.
That should really help make housing more affordable
Nice to see all the Chinese students wearing masks.
Yes, they bring the communism with them 😮
I wrote a book on this subject: chapter one opens with an indictment of the lack of democracy within Universities, Airports and Hospitals, _some of which_ are indeed larger than some small towns -economically if not in sheer population. The book is called _No More Manifestos._ Don't read it. It'll give you nightmares.
Aka just starting with the 15 minute cities WEF agenda plan.
Bro you are mental.
@@kanucks9 Can't handle the truth now can you.
@@kanucks9Refute what he said or leave. Calling someone mental is not an acceptable argument.
@kanucks9 a young blackface in the making, I see.
I heard some departments coming to Surrey . Is that true ?????
Well, they are actually building housing so there’s that!
Well, that should make the students of with super wealthy parents from abroad happy ;)
@@JonnyGee Look you're not wrong. I just really want you to be
Wait but?, this is kinda perfect. And I never agree with the news.
Until the news agrees with you 😂
@@TalwinderDhillonTravels yea, wtf lol 😂
From immigration...😂😂😂
CANADA no more...thanks to politicians 😂😂
Only the rich can afford to live there.
I wonder if any of that “population” will be actual Canadians.
Nope.
I wonder how many concussions you've suffered ...?
@@thehellyousayNot an argument. Debate what he said or get out.
As for 2023 admission round, only 28% students are international. Doesn’t matter if they are Canadian or not, as long as you are a student living on campus, you should be able to vote. Cuz I don’t think anyone would like to see their rent or tuition going any higher
No🙄
If residents don't like the land use plan, it's not "tough", they can vote out the provincial government.
as long as there isn't some richer, more demanding, more populus batch of older people that dominate the voting pool
The governor is already very left leaning, wtf are we gonna vote for? Stalin reincarnated?
NIMBYs complaining about UBC not letting them be NIMBYs
This CBC reporter has he/ him pronouns.😂
That's what happens when you give the land to the First Nations.
Huh
What do you think they meant by 'lease' in the video?@@amank.7052
I know there is a lot of taking land from First Nations, but I can't say I have heard of much giving of land to First Nations. The occasional returning land that the government had signed a treaty agreeing it was their land then taking it anyway. Sometimes the courts force the government to return that land, sometimes.
Go have another drink.
@@thehellyousayYou are so polite. 😁
We will take back the land.
😂😂😂
Justin T needs to resign. I came 20 years back and will never vote for liberals
