A genre that's exploded in popularity, but personally I didn't really jump on that bandwagon when it started, finding a lot of games just "meh" or not worth the hype. Nowadays I've appreciated a few more of them but this still isn't a genre I go crazy for. However people want to know my favourite ten, so after some frantic playtesting of games in the last few months, I'm finally ready to talk about ten good ones I can recommend.

I suppose the difference between my preference and your suggestions is mostly because I am most of the time a solo player, only at occasions (once every few months I have friends stopping by to play games). Of the games you mentioned, I have played Long Shot and On Tour, both of which I love, and own, and Ganz Schon Clever, which I didn't care for. Missing from your list is Rolling Realms. Some of the newer promotional and add on cards are not so good, but the original set is very good. It is, however, harder than usual to teach for a roll and write, because most of the people I'm teaching have never played the games that this game is based on.

Isle of Cats - nailed it. Drafting takes way too long and the Explore and Draw gets rid of the tedious stuff and keeps 90% of the great stuff. I just wish there were cats featured more on the box cover and the ship board.

  • @gemgenie06

I really enjoy Silver and Gold and right there with you about it being easy to teach and pick up and play. Personally i like Ganz schon because i like numbers so for me the lack of "theme" doesnt concern me too much.
Theres also an Animal kingdom spin off called Roar and Write (i have a feeling it was round the Rwar and write period at the start of lockdown and something in the back of my mind is remembering something about there being a name clash with Rwar and write and someone had to change thier name??? maybe im just missremembering that though???) thats fun because there are animal cards that change the game depending no which ones are in play so changes up the strategy a little. One major issue with that though is the boxes on the score pads that you write in are TINY!! realistically you need to use a sharpened pencil ir fineliner to make anything legible. Im one of those who like to laminate a few score pads and reuse them so i dont just blast through the pad and end up with a game i cant play anymore and I ended up having to go buy new very fine tipped drywipes specifically for that game.
Found a really really simple roll and write print and play a few years ago called 13 sheep and it had a little push your luck element to it - do you close off the sheep enclosure now so they are safe but score less points OR do you try for a bigger enclosure and risk the wolves getting them.
Im always up for the simplicity of a roll and write because sometimes the brain just isnt up for mind bendingly complex rules and play processes.
On the room - i like this room because its nice bright and airy but to make things easier could you just take a good definition photo of the room and then green screen/masque it into the background so you can leave the equipment set up in the other room??

There’s a lot of decent roll & writes - but I think that it’s the multiplayer solitaire nature that prevents them from being real favourites for me - although some do work well as quick app games. For some reason I really do enjoy Welcome To despite it being one of most solitary of the lot - helps that it has a great solo mode that elevates the gameplay.

Great List! Putting in another ding for Fleet: The Dice Game. It hits the multi-combo saturation point without spilling into insanity like the design teams later Three Sisters(though I do enjoy that one quite a bit). I would also recomment Riverside, which has a beautiful design aesthetic and modular map tiles for lots of replayability. Also, for a good cheapie, try Qwinto. It's theme-less (which might not be your bag) but somehow manages to distill the essence of the Welcome To... games into a quick and tense push-your luck experience.

It's not the best game ever or anything like that, and the rulebook is bad, and it needs more maps, but i found it surprisingly enjoyable, and different to everything else in my collection.

With Cartographer Heroes and one of the map packs, the game is not generic at all.
And the gimmicks of drawing enemies on your neighbours map is not at all the reason why it is the highest ranked roll/flip & write on BGG (rank 130, next is welcome to 155). ;-)
As more thematic Roll Player is than Sagrada, as more thematic Cartographers is than Welcome to....WHEN not just using the basic map.
Still with the basic map the game is great because by using a point system similar to Isle of Skye it has the most variable goals system of all Roll/Flip and Writes.
    Examples of map packs:
    - a map with a volcano spreading lava from time to time
    - a map where you start at the surface and then digging underground
    - a map with connected islands
    - a map where you buy equipment to get better or more flexible
    ....
I highly recommend giving that a try, no matter if solo or multiplayer.

I'm on the same boat with Roll & Writes. Not my favourite genre. I guess many people like them as most of them can be played quickly, in biggee groups and do not cost a fortune. Many feel like just crossing off things and taking a bonus, then cross off something else. There are some I like to play (Railroad Ink), but many have that problem. The "Ganz schön clever" series I actively hate 😅
Roomwise I like to see this sometimes. But if it gets too hot or it is too much moving the equipment around, you can certainly do your Top Tens in the other room.

I was a genre apologist for a long time, tried a few dozen probably. But finally got tired. I agree that it's done to death at this point. I should try a couple of big hits, but in the end I'm just fed up for now. Two big trends I see:
    1. Break from roll-n-write formula with additional components and gimmicks. But at that case, why not make a proper traditional board game? RnR's were cool because they were interesting puzzles confined in very few components.
    2. Small primitive box-ticking bingo games, that all feel more and more the same honestly.

For someone who doesn't like a lot of Roll & Writes - this is a pretty good list. I'll have to keep an eye out for your top 2 since most of the rest of them we've liked a lot. The only one I feel you are missing is Three Sisters (and the two others of that line). Because of the dice drafting, it has that interaction that's missing in so many of the others. In a lot of ways, it's like Hadrian's Wall in that you are building a sort of engine with various pathways - BUT one that matters with the dice drafting and rules that are easier to remember if you haven't played in awhile. I sold my Hadrian's Wall as well. It just didn't stand out to me as a sandbox euro against one of your favorites Fields of Arle.

I've been getting into "x" and write stuff lately. I love Dungeons, Dice & Danger. So far my friends my really like it as well(we like generic fantasy). I just picked up Silver and Gold, haven't played it yet, but it looks good and easy to learn. Welcome to Your Perfect Home is one of my favorite solo games. I only have those three plus I want to get Harvest Dice but as you've said it's hard to find. Long Shot looks neat too, but as I play a lot of games with my dad and he isn't a fan of gambling it will probably be hard to actually play that one. I have Twilight Inscription on a wish list as we also love TI4 and it might cure that itch to want to play it. We can only get a proper game of TI4 once every few months or so.
As for the room thing, doesn't matter to me, I like both they both have good aesthetics. Wouldn't mind seeing a top 10 at the table where you can have the games in hand as you talk about them.

I don't understand you comments on Hadrian's wall. Pretty much everything you said is in Twilight Inscription is is Hadrian's Wall in different form. Commerce, "Armada", etc. And it's clear one sheet is the wall and defenses sheet and the other is the village/city sheet. It's all clear.
And it's isn't difficult to teach. If you explain it's a bunch of tracks that can be crossed of in a few different ways (resources, symbols, building the wall) then it becomes a lot less daunting. Have taught it to a few different group (some with very inexperienced gamers) and not one has struggled with it in any way.

Luke, just do whatever is easier for you. I actually kind of like the other room with the table. My number one x and write at the moment is Dinosaur Island Rawr and Write. I had Dinosaur World already and thought that I did not need the x and write version. Oh, was I wrong. Just an excellent game. Long shot is my number two. Indeed an excellent multiplayer game. I also like Three Sisters, Hadrian’s Wall and the PNP games from Postmark Games (the company of Matthew Dunstan and Rory Muldoon, with titles like Voyages, Aquamarine and Waypoints). The latter are very inexpensive (you get 4 to 5 different maps for only 4GBP) but very well thought out games that look very nice.
On Hadrian’s Wall, I do get your comments. My main gripe is that the strategy is a bit one dimensional. If you don’t build up your military and wall to defend against the Picts you get shafted as undoing disdain is not easy. So it forces you a bit too much in the same direction every play. And there are some items, like the gladiators, that I have never used as it did not seem worth the effort.
