The magnet looking things are for competitive. The v stars have a special, usually powerful move called a V Star Power. You can only use one per game and that is a counter to check if you used it or not. They did the same thing with GXs back in sun and moon.

Loving the pokemon content! I recently got back into Pokemon TCG and have been having a blast opening the new sets.
The V Star tokens (the not so magnet magnets) are used in the TCG as a tracker to see if you have used your VStar move at all during the fight.
