What if the reward is just seeing what we are doing? He doesn't jump on the counter just to take stuff. He even does it in the bathroom when I'm washing my hands or when I'm straightening my hair etc. He hasn't grabbed anything off the counter yet but I'm sure he will be quite capable when he gets bigger (hes 5 months)
You guys and Simpawtico are the holy grail of dog training on youtube.
Seriously, thank you for your content, unbelievably useful.
This isn't that helpful in my situation. My dog is doing it at night, or when my husband is sleeping and I am not at home. I would like to avoid using a kennel because of how small our house is. She is also hard of hearing so even if I have chance to use a command on her I would loose my voice from lowering my pitch as much as possible in hopes she hears me.
Welp my dog just ate 8 raw steaks so... that’s why I’m here
RileyCZ 12
Oof
That's highly unfortunate
Oof 8? I thought my dog eating 6 hamburger rolls was bad
my dog just ate a large batch of muffins that I spent 2 hours on lol
Yeahhh, mine just tried to eat a piece of toast
My problem is that my dog knows never to jump up on the counter when I'm in the room. He only dies it when he's alone and thinks he can get away with it. He knows he is wrong, but chooses to do it anyway...
Exactly my dog knows he’s doing wrong but chooses to do it when he can get away with it or just do it anyway.
My dog legit jumped on the counter, took the entire pack of turkey bacon off and demolished it…by the time I came back to the kitchen, she was in her crate looking at me with her sorry eyes…smh. I was furious lol
WHAT DID YOU DO TO TRAIN HIM?!?!
@@5076_GidijalaDineshSurya it was more training myself to never trust him to not do it. The only thing I haven't tried is using a camera and a ecollar to correct him even when he thinks he us alone. But, most dogs learn when the have thd collar in and not, so even that has flaws too.
Exactly! And he gives himself away when we get home because he looks all guilty and goes into his crate.
Can we just appreciate how the McCann team has thought of everything? Each time our pup comes up with something else, there's a McCann video to help me train her through it. ❤️
"Dog's do what's rewarding."
Dog: Poops on my Bed
Me: Guess that's rewarding😑
Horrible vial disgusting creatures i regret ever getting mine.
My dog only eats stuff off the counter when we aren't in the same room. She's really smart and sneaky. I'm at my wits end.
I've spent the last hour looking for tips on how to stop my dog doing sneaky stuff behind my back. No luck.
Bro literally. I have a camera and I leave her out when I leave and she never jumps up on the counter or even goes near it or the couch when I’m home. Within 2 minutes of me leaving she’s doing it all. Super sneaky.
do they not make a dog collar that detects a collar on a horrizontal plane? Seems like a slam dunk. My dog almost burned our house down last week while we were outside because it was on the counter
maybe don't leave food on the counter.
@@annmariecimarusti3306 it’s not just food that dogs can get into tho, like for example, my dog just tore up a book I had up on my bar while I was gone. Sometimes they find anything they can get to.
We have a 10 month old rescue dog... She is OBSESSED with food! Anytime we are eating or preparing food she is in the kitchen. She will try over and over to jump up ON to the kitchen table. Thank you for these training tips and method, because yelling no and dragging her off each time isn't working!
my dog does not counter surf when I am in the room. She is a large breed, and can reach anything left on stove or counter. She waits until I have stepped outside, or have left the room. This technique does not work for me, because she does not even attempt to counter surf when I am there.
Webcam, ecollar, one correction, done.
Hide around the corner, or teach your dog to stay out of the room completely.
Or, mimic the training on another surface.
Please don’t listen to ecollar advise... positive reinforcement works far better then negative
Sub you won’t dogs need both positive and negative reinforcement to do well! Please educate yourself on ecollars
@@subyouwont A simple sound interruption or a vibration is painless and snaps a dog out of the decision.
This is super helpful! What we’ve been trying is to teach her not to jump up is only using the “leave it” command, but we never made it rewarding to stay on the ground!
My dog just ate two pies and my lamb shanks. He is a cane corso. Lord, 🙏🏽 I hope this helps
Mine just ate an entire casserole dish of tiramisu and 7 breadsticks. Hes a doberman. I feel your pain lol
Oh my 😛 How frustratingly cute lol
I haven't eaten all day, and my dog just stole and ate all my hotdog supplies, now I'm starving and have nothing to eat😑 he's a 6 month old standard poodle (HE'S HUGE)

Thanks for the video! Really needed that first step, my family has been suffering for a year because we have a beagle who could care less unless it’s about food
My dog only gets on the counter when we aren't in the room. She never did this till about a month ago, and the same thing with eating out of the cat's litter box. We might end up taking her to our local pet store to pay for some classes to get her trained more. But she's about 4 or 5 years old and never did this till last month.
Same. Whenever I’m out of the room. And especially at night.
I always keep my counters clear of food because we have sneaky cats too. And when I'm not there I always spray the area down with vinegar and water when I'm done prepping food. She hates the smell and it's helping her lose interest when we are not around.
good idea. I have cats as well and my dog just searches the empty counters looking for food and just to see what is up there. Will try the vinegar and water
My dog jumps up on the counter all the time. He just ate a steak. Thx I really needed this vid.
omg the same exact thing just happened to me
Any tips for larger dogs, who’s face is already level with the counter?

How about that coffee mug at 6:00 ! 👍 love it, also love the idea of a cheese slice
That mug is a go-to ;) Can you guess whose it is?? Yes, the cheese slice is an often overlooked training tool! ~Ken
This makes a lot of sense.
This is similar to how I trained him to stay.
Thank you
I trained my dog to be allowed to jump on counters (at stores) specifically on command, and now he thinks he can do it on his own.
He’s a service dog in training and he’s now stolen a whole rotisserie chicken, fried chicken thighs and he almost just stole an apple pie 🤦🏼♀️ he only does it when I turn my back though.
I am hoping I get an answer to my question. I see lots of questions posted about this video without answers. This is how it goes with many videos, which is why people give up training. I like your method better than most I've watched. My dog (9 month old golden) countersurfs after something has been removed from the counter to see if it's still there (or maybe something even better). I can usually preempt the behavior with a leave it in which he'll look to me or come to me to get a reward (previously trained). If I am consistent with this will it eventually stop the behavior? I'm trying to think "dog. What is preventing this from happening when I'm not in the room to say leave it? Is it just a matter of him being rewarded so many times for not countersurfing that it eventually takes over the want to countersurf. I always compare dog training to teaching your kids to say please and thank you. You tell them over and over when to say it. then you give them a chance to do it on their own ("what do you say" or sometimes wait for the please until they get what they want) and then one day they just do it and you almost pass out. Same thing, maybe?
My 6mth puppy is a big boy and he is always counter and table surfing. Is frustrating, we can’t leave anything unattended he will get it in just seconds. I started to locked him up every time I’m cooking or the kids are eating because he will jump and get whatever they are having. Thanks for this advise I will
Put it in practice
Hi, this video is amazing but I still have a question about dog counter surfing
Even if I’ve done lots of training and keep food off the counter, there’re always times when I forget to put away the food and the dog decides to go for it. I know it’s completely my fault but is there a way I can still let the dog know that snatching food off the table is not acceptable after she’s done it?
Thanks
We got a Siberian Husky from a rescue and she takes food off the counter. We got her and she was 18 months or little older. She is the first dog I eve had that does this. She does not even make an attempt ANYTHING when anyone is in the room, it is always when food is unattended.
Hello. Question. So I have a Labrador Retriever, she is almost a year old. She counter serfs. It's really bad. She grabs whatever she can get. Towels, Food including avocados which are bad for dogs, pepper, she has broken my dads, mom and my glasses twice. She has a half tare ACL in one of her legs right now and hopefully getting surgery soon. We are thinking about trying a e caller only for counter surfing because we have tried so many other ways. With other things we use food or just being really energizing when on walks and she does well with that. Food just doesn't work with counter surfing. Its almost rewarding the behavior. It is only a matter of time she grabs something really bad that will actually hurt her. Thoughts????
When you see them smelling the air and the house line is on, can you say no and correct them?
mine is a 10 month old beagle. counter surfing. I really don't want to reward with a treat. any other ideas? I do praise and play with sit come stay. which she is getting very good at.
He’s not interested in food on the counters unless I’m distracted or not in the room. Usually I’ll step out for a moment while I’m putting food away and he’ll help himself
How many times and how long do you do each stage? I am 100% failing at training my dog and I am so discouraged.
Our dog knows to stay off the counter so only does it when we leave the house. She does it to see out of the window. Any tips?
The way I did this is a can with stones in it shook it once she stopped straight away and the table jumping now we sit and eat in peace so easy and it works for most things
Ken, doesn't this teach them that they should expect treats when food is present on counters, which encourages barking/begging? In other words, if he's sitting calmly while we're eating (and food on the counter or table), should he (ever) be rewarded for that with treats or in a different way?
If you are saying "leave it" or another command (not no) similar to it and the dog "leaves it" for a second and yiu give them a treat they are more likely learning the command and not to beg. Tbh I'd rather have them begging for treats then get into things that coukd potentially hurt them.
This goes for another unwanted behavior as well. The dog will learn the meanings of each command given over time and learn to not do any unwanted behavior associated with that command.
Ie: dog sees food on table left un attended but decides to leave it due to being taught that it's an unwanted behavior to take the food.
Will this help with our living room coffee table- he keeps jumping up and pulling stuff down or eating our food and drinks sitting there
What I’ve seen of dogs is they will behave while you’re present but as soon as you leave the room, they’re back at it again.
What do you do when your dog is very sneaky (he's a Ninja!) and watches and waits until I have stepped out of the room before he goes after what's on the counter? He has a tongue like Gene Simmons and is a hard core counter surfer. I have tried to entice him to jump up but when I have eyes on him he wont do it. He is a super opportunist.
What if my puppy chews through the house line?
Hopefully this helps with my Burnese Mountain Dog. She's only 5 months old but she's been able to reach the counter since she was 4 months old. Hopefully I can out stubborn her on this training 😂
These videos are helpful! My new puppy loves jumping on the counter to see what she can find. However, the bell sound in this video freaks out my other dog 😬
My dog always does this when I'm not looking. Does this work even when you're not there?
Oh man this is my biggest pet peeve. My friend invited us all over for Thanksgiving and her dog kept jumping on the table, jumping on us, and hovering over our plates. Mind you he’s no small dog… he’s a big German Shepherd. It was so annoying.
What do you do if you’re seeing your dog reaching for something on the counter if you’re in another room?
Video starts @ 2:25
Can you do a video specifically for leaving things that are on a coffee table? The ease of access at the much lower height make it a hard to manage situation.
Hi there, Danielle! The steps in this video are exactly the same if your dog has easier access to the food. I actually considered shooting this video using one of our instructor's Irish Wolfhounds, but we couldn't get our schedules to work out. Building value for not taking food when it's more accessible can be done using these same steps. You'll have to place the food a little farther back so that it's easier for your dog to be successful though. And we have a couple of other videos that I can share that will teach your dog to make better choices as well. The first video will show you How To Teach Your Puppy to Leave It when you are supervising them: czcams.com/video/tDYzRgf3sOIT/video.htmlhe second video will help your dog to understand that having a little self-control will be more rewarding than just taking food when they see it. My dog is a German Shepherd. He normally doesn’t counter surf for food and he definitely won’t do it when my bf and I are home. He only does it when we are out of the house but he takes newspapers or vitamin bottles then chews it up. Unfortunately, he doesn’t like or respond to treats, just spits them out so training him was tricky. Could he be behaving out of separation anxiety? Is there any suggestions for training him not to take things from the counter while we are away?
It sounds like it isn't safe to give him free reign when you are not home. Also, a hungry dog will respond better to treats as rewards. Feed him a bit less and increase the value of the treats. I can't imagine he would spit out small bites of steak🙂.
Dang. Just noticed your comment was from 2 years ago... so how is he now?😁😁
my dog is too smart when it comes to these things, she doesn't do it when I'm home, if I eat she doesn't even look in my direction. But if I walk out even for 5 minutes hell is let loose, anything on the counter is gone, even if it's not food. I have put everything off from the counter many times but I still know she's jumping to them. And I don't like it.
How do I contact you directly. My boyfriend needs help with his puppy mountain dog.
Any suggestions for house leads? My dog chews on every leash unfortunately.

Is there a way you could show a way to stop a dog (mines a 1yr old but any age) from sticking his face and head in the your lap (and trying to move him away is like trying to move a building) if you have a snack? My lab has such SA with me that he goes ballistic in his kennel if the door is closed even if I sit right next to it. His leave it is 50/50 at best and off is just slightly better. But the drive for the food is to great.
For the record, I have followed so many SA tips over the months it's not funny.
You're speaking my language, Steven! Being a Lab owner I know exactly what you're talking about. I will create a video addressing the closing of the crate door problem in the future, but this one exercise really changed my Labrador's pushy behavior when it came to food. By giving your dog a choice to make, and teaching him that it's much more valuable to give you some room when you have food, you will start to see him make some better choices. Here is a link to our "A Game That Teaches Your Dog Some Self Control" video that you should work on with your food hound ;) Link: czcams.com/video/G6ixdBkqsWI/video.html
Keep me posted on your progress. Happy Training! ~Ken
Can standing on the leash hurt the dog if they jump suddenly?
The problem with my girl who is around 16 months is that she is very food motivated, she did calm down for a while up until 3 months ago so I could leave the kitchen door open and she would only attempt to steal anything that was easy to reach, now I have to close the door again unless I am in there (as she is nervous when I cook as she was splashed when she was younger when she got under my feet) its not just counter surfing she outright licks every counter and even the cooker even if they are clean (though I am aware even though they look clean they may not be)
I’m here cause I just had to leave my dog at the animal hospital for 2 days because he ate a whole box of cookies he got off the counter.... so yeah 😂 (he’s fine now tho)
puppy eats anything on kitchen floor or in ground, please help
How do you train them not to counter surf when they are marmaduke. No cues they will be grabbing something because they don't even have to jump.
My 14 week old golden is starting to jump on things like cabinets, coffee tables, and dinner table chairs. Hopefully this will help break her from this from a young age
Get can with small stones in it shake the can when they do it this will scare them and they will not do it again just have a few cans round the house and in the end you will only have to touch the can easy
I set his food (Breakfast and dinner) on the counter and feed him by hand as rewards for not jumping.
good thinking !!
My dog with sit and look at me, but will keep barking for more treats. Any tips to wean off food rewards?
Ignoring them and pointedly looking away is a good method, otherwise try clicker training

I have only one question: do dogs do what's rewarding? :P

What do I do with a 5 month old 90lb Great Dane puppy? I can’t keep my foot on the leash… he’s too strong. And nothing is too hard for him to reach.
Bro trained me while teaching me how to train my dog. Crazy
Now what about if you're not there? My 6 month knows not to do it as he will not do it in front of me but as soon as my back is turned, he tries it.
Thank you. My dog does great during training but then just goes right back to jumping on counter after. How should I handle this?
That's everybody's problem this video addressed nothing.
I know my dog will do this perfectly but outside of training he just won’t listen. It’s so frustrating
What do you do when the dog is chewing on the houseline?
Hi there, Gus Da Goose's Mom! The nice part about the house-line is that they'll have it on when you're supervising. When your pup starts to fuss with the line you can mark it with your voice by telling them to leave it, take it out of their mouth and redirect them to something that they are allowed to chew! Happy Training! ~Ken
Is dance with me a trick cuz I wanna teach my dog that do you think I could have that trick and also dance just the dog by them self
Next video on how to teach down step by step also with teaching your to go down when you say down no matter what
Its the same as 'quiet' you have to teach them to 'speak' so they know the difference.
I know it seems counterintuitive to teach your dog to jump up, but its how they understand what down is.
"Dogs do what's rewarding" So make it rewarding to listen, then, they won't jump up until told and will listen when told to get down - Because they are rewarding, via your training.
@@sequoiamarett293 not true at all dogs don't understand English, we have to teach them commands. Just cause I teach down doesn't mean now they know jump. Teaching using luring with food saying down before so they get conditioned to the command with action/ use treats or food to start then stop luring and only using food to reward once they do the correct action. Last thing is to add corrections in when they dont preform what they know. Last is to proof the exercise in different environments.
I don’t know why, but i feel a strong urge to say “dog’s do what’s rewarding”🤔👀

My Pyrenees doesn’t counter surf but jumps up onto the sink to lick up any water which is dangerous especially if it’s soap water. Hoping this’ll help.
My dogs high value treat is… ice. I’m in for a fun time 🥲
My dog just ate a whole 5 egg omelette and that’s why I’m here
Iam getting so frustrated that my dog is always jumping on us and no counter/table surfing
My issue is that my dog is currently on a very restricted diet, which is costing me hundreds upon hundreds of dollars because she has food allergies that were trying to determine. I can't give her the high value foods that she wants.
But what if they ONLY do it when we are not home or not in the main part of the house. It’s not just food though, scissors, a plastic bag, mail, papertowel roll, cups, bread at back of the counter against the wall, even when they have a fresh smoked butcher bone out of the counter and food readily available and tons of toys.
That’s a great question, Taya! And it’s not an uncommon one. If your pup is making these mistakes when nobody is home you need to make better management choices for them. Not allowing them access to these areas will be important so your dog can’t rehearse the behavior. Using a crate is a great way to make sure your pup is safe when you can’t watch them. In lieu of a crate, only having access to a “dog proof” area will be a good choice so you can address and correct the issue! Happy Training! ~Ken

Same issue here...and from what I've seen/heard from the pros, you can't reward him with attention -- or food -- when he beg-barks. Problem for us is that you have to keep all family members in line. If anyone cracks, then he just got rewarded and it'll get worse. Good luck...let me know if you find any great tips.

Kids and dogs are a hard mix. My dog sneaks to the kitchen to counter surf. Kids leave food on counter dog sneaks in for the reward. She also hits the garbage can when no one is watching. Any tips for the extremely sneaky dog? She will not dare do this when i am in the kitchen.
Hi there, Sherry! Really spend time building value for remaining on all four paws when there is a challenging distraction up there. The reality is, dogs can be opportunists. They'll do whatever they find rewarding, and take advantage of the moments when they can reward themselves. If you shift the value from the counter to remaining off of the counter, you'll start to see less jumping up. Another thing you can do is set her up so she feels like she has a little more freedom. The moment she pauses to air-scent, or she investigates the counter edge, you can use your "off" command. Happy Training! ~Ken
My dog only counter surfs when no one is watching. She is way faster than me and I can never catch her in the act.
That’s really common, Jessica! That’s exactly why you need to set her up like I do in this video. With lots of repetition, you’ll start to transfer the value to the behavior of her keeping all 4 on the floor😉 Happy Training! ~Ken
I tried this method and it didn’t work, I’ve tried for a week, as much as I could possible when I caught her in the act. I eventually didn’t have enough time to train it 24/7 or when I’m cooking/doing something out of the kitchen and the dog being around the house, so I used an E-collar on a medium level, with me watching from the window, two medium zaps and she never did it again
What about dogs that do counters like cats???
My dog takes Tupperware out of the sink and destroys it just to lick what’s on the inside this morning I put the leftover baked beans from lunch in the sink with the lid on it and by the time I was five minutes gone, the beans was already gone and the Tupperware destroyed
Dogs do what rewarded
How do you teach orbit
This is fine, but how do you ever stop rewarding your dog? I can’t keep treating him every time when I’m cooking or eating. If I stop he will start jumping up again won’t he?
When my dog ate $100 worth of groceries this week that’s why I’m here
My almost ate a whole waffle from the counter
In Italy dog is Cane. 😂🐶
Mine just ate 4 pieces of raw chicken . He ate an entire pizza - bananas, rotisserie chicken, loaf of bread, and it is non stop. He gets in the sink. This is all after he eats - he’s not starving. He is eating better than us! It literally happens the second I turn my back.
What do I do if my dog rarely counter surfs he only really does it when he thinks there's no one watching him
Plot twist. My 8 month old German won't touch the food on the counter unless I'm in the same room.
Well my dog was stove surfing, he turned a gas flame on, and caught a plastic spoon rest on fire.
How about if they only do it when you’re gone. Mine don’t jump up, they can reach....Great Danes

@@TheeSarahWood Somebody else suggested a webcam and correct them then. Maybe that way they'll expect that you can see them all the time?
