After almost 9,5 years of operation, I had to change my battery of my 135i last saturday. In an E82 this is actually a lot easier and more accessible than an E90. Everything is in reach in the middle of the trunk. What I missed in your video is that you need to plug the other side of the vent opening on the battery when installing. Either take the plug from your old battery, or use the plug provided with the new battery to plug the vent hole that is not in use. There is one on either side of a battery. You plug the grey hose in the + side vent hole (9:00), bot say nothing about plugging the other hole. If you don't plug it, it could lead to venting unwanted gasses into the trunk. And registering the battery with MHD, as long as it is the same spec, is ridiculously simple and quick.

Disagree. You’re like my naggy wife. She’ll exaggerate her point thinking to win an argument when all she does is make her statement untrue.
Engineers should care more about owner repairs but it is not a priority for BMW. There was wasted space behind the firewall. And freeing up space in the front allows for more flexibility in design. Pretty car.
And for BMW management, it prevents discourages user repairs. No, they would prefer you not do your own repairs. And types like you and me need more discouragement than just needing some Torx sockets.

Many questions after this video: you can do the registration with INPA, ISTA or NCS Expert and a generic OBD. Besides, you dont say how much time you must have the car turned on the first time so that the ECU measures correctly the SoH (state of health) of the battery. You dont cover as well whether to charge the new battery before installing it. It can be as low as 60%.

    Hello sir,
New subscriber here. I have a '08 650i convertible that was reading "high battery drain" for about 2 weeks and all of a sudden it was no longer appearing. Car was driving fine until 2 days ago(Tuesday night). I went on the bypass to go home and stopped at a light approximately 4-5 miles from home. While sitting at the light out of nowhere "transmission malfunction" message came on but the car was running fine. When the light changed I proceeded to drive and within a few seconds the car began to slow down, luckily enough for me to pull into a safe place(Walgreens parking lot) so I called for a tow. While waiting I looked online and read the Bimmer forum where it was said to turn the car off and try to restart it as turning it off would reset it. After about 20 minutes, the car restarted so I called the tow to cancel, but unfortunately while on the phone with them the car did the same thing again and again I was lucky enough to pull over safely. Towed it home and the next morning, it started right up. I turned it off to see if it would restart again and nothing. My question is this, if my battery is bad, could BMW have it to where placing the car in "limp mode" is a way of avoiding ruining the transmission???? Could it be that there is no problem with the transmission is itself but a safe way to keep from further damaging the car? When it comes to BMW or as I call them "Basic Mechanics can never Work on them" lol 😉)who knows lol. I would appreciate any help or advice you can give. I know I should take it to the dealership, but I've had so many foreign cars to know that if the car will actually start, then the problem can't be that bad...just costly lol. I thank you in advance.

That registering battery thing is for bmw geeks, I never did it on my e91and had no problems at all. Even with puting higher Ah battery (as I have diesel engine). Btw. never used bmw oem battery, just local store type. Imo its just the thing to grind ppl's money in services.

You are on to something. A new battery for my 135i was $120 at Sam's Club. Who cares if the registration makes the battery last 4 years rather than 3.75? I'll buy another one when it's time, without the extortion from the dealer.

My bmw 335i e92 battery died. I removed ,charged at local mechanics and now about to put back in,same battery.
Do you need that blue and black plugs removed from the plastic before you connect the positive? I removed my positive with all plugs still in the plastic bit.
Just wondering if its safe to connect everything regarding positive side all at once, and then the negative.

They didn’t plug in the last blue connector that he plugged in....can anyone tell me what that ones for and if that could’ve cause the problem

Hi Lee, I was wondering if you have heard of intermittent starting issues. My car is a 328i (not x drive) It has 78K miles. From one day to another it decided to not turn on. It sounds like an old car with a plugged fuel filter. It basically starts when it wants to. Usually if I let it sit for a few days without attempting to start it, the next time it try it works. Sometimes all the lights turn on (check engine, some weird multiple lights, etc) other times it starts without a single light on. I have had 3 places check it out BMW dealership messed up my car and I have zero confidence in them, they wanted $3500 to repair it prior to having this issue. Another dealership ran a diagnostic and said it was caused by a oil leak and charged me $230 for the diagnostic, the last dealership wanted to update everything and wanted about $4K. I requested to replace the spark plugs and the MAF sensor based on a video that I saw on youtube, but my car is now running amazing, but I still have the intermittent start issue. I know have a battery issue and am hoping, perhaps that was the issue to begin with. Now that I am seeing how complex a vehicle battery is, maybe I should have started with that. Hopefully you can give me some guidance. The car battery light NEVER turned on until today and after everything I tried was before this. Hope to hear from you. Thanks in advance!

This just may be your best and most concise tutorial yet. Thank you for taking the time in such challenging temperatures.
Just a couple of notes since I replaced mine a few moments ago.
On my 2012 E92 335is, the bolt for the clamp is much shorter, so it would be a hassle with the full length battery. There are 3 threaded receptacles on the floor of the battery compartment to accommodate 3 standard lengths that fit. The bolt used had a 10mm head with no slots for a screw driver, and an extension was required.
I found that removing all of the connections to the negative side of the positive terminal block allowed the block to be placed easily out of the way next to the RR wheel well in the trunk. No zipties needed and the seatback release handles just did not appear to be designed for that load. The large positive terminal has a 13mm nut. The 10 mm nuts to clamp terminals have washers, so be careful. I highly recommend a terminal lubricant/sealant on both posts.
Mine also had a large grey connector on the outboard socket. I did not have small blue/white wire on the negative cable.
My battery is a Odyssey Performance 48-720 with 723 CCA but only 69AH rating. The warranty is three years as opposed to two for the factory battery which is larger and has a 90AH rating and 720CCA. shop.odysseybattery.com/p/48-720
Does the Bav-Tech not allow entering the required values? Perhaps it only accepts the standard battery parameters?
Oh, I kept the battery charger connected on AGM at 2A, but clock and trip odometer did not retain values. Every thing else preserved.
Thankfully it was much warmer here.

    • @Bruce_T
      @Bruce_T Před 5 lety

Depends on what type of battery you get.
Most cases, not much will happen, but if you had a smaller battery prior to installing the new one, the alternator will charge the new battery at the same rate it was charging the old one. Better to register the battery to improve it's overall battery life.
