  • In this episode, I’ll show you how to easily install a cone filter.
This install is similar for a bunch of different makes and models, but today I’ll show you how to do it on an 04 Legacy running the 3 liter H6.
LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK:

Please follow the above link to take a short 10 question survey to help make dirtcheapdaily even better!
The first thing you want to do before you even buy a filter, is to make sure your stock airbox doesn’t have any sensors or wires running to it. If it does, you should do some research and see if you can successfully run a cone filter on your car.
I’ve put cone filters on all my 1990's subarus and never had issues. I put them on because I’ve seen significant fuel economy gains and I love how they sound!
Since this is the 6 cylinder, I decided to get the large 11" filter, but on my other 4cylinder subarus, I’ve always used the standard 6" with success. I've seen lots of people use the smaller 3" filter, and I'm sure it works great, but it doesn't appear to have a larger surface area than the stock drop-in filter, so I don't know if you would see as much of an increase in fuel economy.
Your local auto parts store probably carries these, but amazon has them for the cheapest prices.

@@Dirtcheapdaily The H6 actually has a MAF if it is of a newer model. I think Subaru revamped the EZ30D around 2004/2005 which is why mine has a MAF sensor.

+DrWeeWe I'd say an 6 mpg highway increase is significant.
I was getting 18mpg on the stock box. Adding the cone filter upped that to 20. Heat shields and cold air upped that to 24.

@@Dirtcheapdaily- There is not enough change in the quantity, density or velocity of the incoming air, to increase fuel consumption efficiency by 40-45%. There's no mention in your comments or the video itself, to explain how you eliminated about a dozen variables, that also affect fuel consumption. You've provided no information about how your test was conducted accurately. If you don't think accuracy is worth your attention or trust, why then should anyone pay your claims any attention or trust? Here's just one example you failed to clarify: the quality and condition of the old stock filter in your car's stock air filter box. The accurately tests of cone filters, in the engine bay and exposed to the same or more ambient heat, prove your incredibly vague claims don't stack up. FWIW, I have a similar vehicle, and am installing a similar cone filter, and also doing it without buying extra parts - but I am doing it carefully, and properly. Oh, and I'm not so silly as to expect or claim 45, 35, 25 or even 15% increase in fuel efficiency from this mod. Changing it for different noise, or more volume? Nah, that's inane. To make my engine bay look better? Nobody, including myself, looks at my engine bay for pleasure.

    • @Dirtcheapdaily

+Justas Šerstkovas before the cone filter I was getting 17-18 pretty consistently for highway driving. After the cone filter it's been consistent from 19-22.
It's not as big of a change as I've seen in 4 cylinder subarus, (I had a 2.2 that was getting 15mpg and after the cone filter it was up at 22)
But I'm still happy with it.
