What about when you release the strap under tension and you've got your hands in the way because the strap is dangling down from the top of the ratchet and needs holding out of the way of the the ratchet to release the strap . If the straps is dangling from bottom you can release the tension safely without having to hold the strap and prevent your hands and Arms from getting tangled in the strap and ratchet as the strap slides through the ratchet on releasing the tension !!!! You should be able to release the ratchet one handed . Also making the strap into a hoop can hook onto things as you pass then and pull the strap and load from your trailer !!!
2nd wrap doesn't need that extra loop to tie the strap on itself. If you just do the 2nd part of that (loop through and twist by hand), then twist as tight as you can. After you can't twist anymore, hit the ratchet one more click to tighten it more.
Could have been useful if you could see what's being done. The most important part is a mystery.

This technique is now called the kiwi roll, at least that’s what I’m calling it.
