      @S C What made these old Mercedes do great. I'm curious because it seems to mirror what people say the same thing about BMW M. The older cars were better. I am a big fan of older BMWs but dislike the direction they are taking now. However I am quickly becoming a massive fan of mercedes-amg. What do you think of cars like the current 4.0 AMG lineup. And what is your favorite older Mercedes.

      @@memememine1 Back in the day, they focused on durability/reliability, efficiency and ease of repair much, much more. They used to be so reliable and so efficient they were used as taxis in most countries throughout Europe and the Mideast. Taxis endure the harshest possible conditions, often used in city driving 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They also focused on performance. Nowadays they focus on performance and they do perform outstandingly well, but they tend to have more than their share of reliability problems. They're very hard to repair because of the insane complexity of their computer systems. They don't seem to care as much about efficiency. The thing about reliability and ease of repair is the attitude comes across that the company wants to reward their customers with a good value that lasts. With low reliability, it's just about grabbing your money and then selling you new car or a bunch of overpriced parts a few years later.

    Here is a question asked by Robert K. :
    "Why didn't you talk about the weird windshield wipers that wipe from the wrong side? Literally my pet peeve with the W140. Why did they do that??"
    here is my answer because all answers he recieved were incorrect:
    You pleabian minions, i will illuminate you! I will let myself down to explain the magnificence behind this design, the wipers are mounted like this on the 140 to have the utter most visibilty under rain, the line of water is always thrown over to the passenger side on the 140, not like on normal cars to the drivers side, it was overcomplicated to achieve this. Normal cars have to do it like that because the wiper on the passenger side is to short and leaves a unwiped big spot in the upper corner, thats why they are mounted like that on normal cars and you have the line of water thrown to the drivers side. On the 140 however it is turned around in a sophisticated overengineered way, the one wiper is on a kind of rack what extends out to wipe the upper most corner on the drivers side, that is why it can be turned around to not have the "line of water" thrown in the drivers face like on normal cars. The RHD drive 140s have the same thing the other way around, it was very expensive and totally overengineered to do so, that is how crazy the engineers went with the 140. The RHD 140s even have a differently shaped front window, it is totally megalomaniac. Greetings from Switzerland

    Hello from Switzerland! Mr. Kon, I have to say the following, I have some minty low mile fetish 140s in my collection and the cars still look massive next to a new W222. You can look down very well on the pleabian minions when you ride along in the 140. The 140 conveys a certain respectful dictator / plutocrat aura similar to the W100 600, which (unfortunately) no longer embodies the current luxury class vehicles. This is probably why the 140 was one of the favorite vehicles of people like Muammar al-Gadaffi, Putin, the Yakuza and Co. even when there were successor series to choose from. The space, security [extremly rugged in a serious crash, a kind of unique "chopped" ladder frame like a truck, plus (!) a unibody is a construction they have not done on any other mercedes except the W240 maybach which build on the 140 chassis, makes this car a "tigertank" that will crush the other car in a serious accident, newer big cars are build weaker for socialist partner protection in a crash to help the smaller car, so you can say 140/240 was the pinnacle of crash saftey in some way, to only protect the occupants of the 140/240 and crush the enemy car with no mercy] a long-distance suitability and comfort of the 140s are in no way inferior to those of the new luxury vehicles, unlike, for example, the very old-school 126 model.
    Good examples of the 140 series are expensive, some are above comparable 126s, which was not the case a few years ago here in Europe (minty 140 500/600 under 60kmiles, go for about 50k/CHF, and I guess will be encreasing further in future) I cannot understand the fear of some "control units", the electronics in the 140 are rock solid and really not rocket science, similar to the W124 E500 E420 E320 or all R129 up to ´98, sometimes even redundant and can still be repaired in the distant future, in contrast to today's cheap and over-complex electronics. In terms of mechanical durability and engine design, the M104, M119 and M120 engines are unsurpassed as far as the petrol engines from Daimler are concerned, provided they are properly cared for, that is the golden era of Daimler, something better was not built before and after. I think some are only now beginning to understand what epochal masterpieces have been created. Elsewhere in the world it was already considered a masterpiece that competed with Rolls Royce and Bentley and even degraded them, similar to the W100. It is not for nothing that the W240 Maybach builds on the chassis of the 140 series. An E32 / E38 or Audi V8 / A8, Lexus LS on the other hand, looks like a poorly manufactured mid-range car, the same with the unworthy supposed successor, the W220, which initiated the qualitative degeneration of Mercedes under J. Schrempp. The W220 actually was not the true successor of the 140, even if some may think so, actually the W240 Maybach was the successor/reincarnation of the W140. The development costs of the 140 were the highest in mercedes history with the engineers running the show and going truly megalomaniac, it was the last engineers car from mercedes and not a car, were accountants and shareholders made the development decisions. The ride, build quality and "aura" is unlike any other mercedes before and after, I have to say, these cars do have a soul.

    • @levoilenoir8799
      @levoilenoir8799 Před 4 lety +5

      To supplement my previous comment with pictures, the W240 (Maybach) is the successor of the W140, as the nomenclature also suggests, not the unworthy W220.
      The Maybach builds on the 140, here are pictures of some Maybach test vehicles. The unique M120 was unfortunately not installed in the W240, which debuted in 2002, for emission reasons, instead the so called M285, a modificated version of the M275 (65AMG).

    the seats are the best, the interior of the SL model is the same as in S. it looks very nice live. Generally, the w220 is a better car, it only has a disadvantage in the form of shock absorbers that need to be replaced or repaired. The engines in w220 at that time had the most horses compared to other brands. He probably invented the mechanics story.

      @levoilenoir8799 Před 4 lety +2

      It is always astonishing how humiliated 220 "fans" burst into discussions about other MB series with their rusty electronic waste called 220, that is exclusively reserved for my observations to the 220 fraction. The W220 has nothing to do with "modern and innovation", that was the car that initiated the qualitative decline of Mercedes under CEO J. Schrempp. At the most, Daimler advertising tried to sell this scrap as "innovation" to the end customer at the time, but do not confuse advertising with reality.
      The development was determined by shareholder value and financial accountants, the aim was to reduce costs and maximize the profit for shareholders, and the engineers were kept on a very short leash. You can see it in all the details, inferior soft paint in the interior, poor leather quality, cheap hinges on the boot lid that are openly visible, the piece of cable between the boot lid and body, the type of door construction - similar to a Golf IV - no longer flush with the body, the extremely poor sheet metal quality compared to previous series, the downsized engines that were designed for cheap production (only one camshaft per bank, only 3 valves per cylinder, "covered up" with double ignition), production of the V6 and V8 Otto engines on one line, delamination of the glass panes over the years, the suppliers squeeze for ever lower production costs of the inferior electronic components etc.
      These are well known facts in Mercedes circles. I have all S class models from the W100 of the late 60s to the current 222 and can report it neutrally, the 220 also as a facelift is by far the worst wreck that Mercedes has ever built. The 220 is very far from the comfort of the predecessor series solely because of its cramped space, and the poor quality impression. But you will know better, live on in your dream world and misjudge reality, because 220 in your twisted mind certainly has the brutal quality and comfort of a 140 paired with the electronic frills of a 222, for all other Mercedes connaisseurs the thing looks like an old Microsoft Smartphone with rust, electric problems and poor build quality, but it is difficult to discuss colors with the blind...
      ...and btw the host of this youtube channel drives a 220 himself. Best regards from Switzerland.

    I always loved this S class, I personally nicknamed it "the German cow" because was so massive and imposing, I remember when I saw one for the first time, looks so polished, well, it's subjective but I think was a great luxury statement, not what to expect from Mercedes Benz by the time but you can't notice this car, from an era when they build the best car at any cost.

It was a long wheel base, champagne color and beige interior. it had a nice set of alloys too! best looking s class in my opinion. still looks good today compared to a lot of other cars on the road. Doesn't look out dated compared to the older generations. I think this is definitely the last proper mercedes built. they were built like tanks and for comfort which i dont see on any mercedes today. I was impressed at how steady the car felt when i drove it. doing 90-100mph feels like 40mph.

More power than my W126 5.0 V8 but produced at much higher revs, so often revved the 4.2 over 3000+rpm whereas the 5.0 rarely need to exceed 2000rpm. But the W140 was exceptionally quiet and at an indicated 140mph was rock solid on the motorway.
