      Is this true??? My bestie used to live in Durham now she’s in Nyc like me . She keeps saying I’ll feel at home in Durham. I’m definitely interested in checking out the housing, art scene etc. My mom is 80 and I’m looking for a good place to relocate that will suit both our needs!

      @@TheMagickHourZ yes - Durham is more progressive and liberal than Raleigh. It is more diverse as well. The food in my opinion is top notch in both cities, but in Durham it has this comfortable feel to it. Raleigh feels a bit more pretentious, and while there are nice pockets everywhere, IMO Raleigh lacks the same sense of community that Durham has. I grew up in Raleigh and have lived/worked in Durham for the past 10 years.

    • @sarawall6784

      I should also mention that Durham is a lot smaller than NYC. Don’t expect anything that grandiose. Where NYC might have 20 of one thing, we likely have 1. With that said, I would think of Durham as like a borough of New York.

      Good areas of Durham: South Durham (more like Suburbia, but great for families and access to malls and multiple stores). In Downtown (if you like the older feel/city feel): Lakewood, Duke Park, Forest Hills, Hope Valley Farms, Trinity Park, Old West Durham. Anywhere bordering Chapel Hill is pretty nice. East Durham is a bit more crime-ridden, but it’s up and coming.

    When I first moved to Raleigh with my family over 25 years ago from the West Coast, I quickly learned "unofficial town mottoes". Durham: "Reach for the sky.....". Pretty accurate. Raleigh: "What do you wanna do today? "I dunno; what do YOU want to do today?" :)

    • @EllenPitts
      @EllenPitts  Pƙed 3 lety +3

      Durham is a much different place than it was 25 years ago. And I guess you are saying Raleigh is boring... there is definitely not a lot of nightlife. But there are tons of outdoor activities, parks, boating, hiking, museums, classes to take, and there is almost always some kind of festival going on (pre/post Covid). If you need to be entertained, you may find Raleigh boring. But if you can enjoy the incredible resources and make your own entertainment, Raleigh is a great place to live.

    I live in Durham and like both cities however on the transportation side I just cannot understand how Raleigh doesn't have easy access to its downtown.almost every major city has that.You have to get off a highway and travel to get there.....Durham has the Durham freeway connecting off I 85,15501..I 40 that puts you right downtown ...Charlotte, Atlanta etc have the same..in my opinion each city has its own identity but I do love the comparison

    • @EllenPitts

      Yeah you do have to go around the south side to get into the city easily. It's pretty easy coming in from 440 south. But from the north you have to go through a decent amount of the city to get into downtown. But then, it's a really small city.

    In my opinion, Chapel Hill is the best part of the Triangle by far. Also, the schools in Durham and Wake County are terrible.

    I'm originally from Detroit, MI currently in South Bend, IN. Considering a move to Raleigh. I don't want the huge city feel and all that comes with like Detroit but want more diversity in culture and social life which South Bend does not offer. I'm 40 years old, single, no kids, work in government, and love a new adventure. Could Raleigh be a good fit? My biggest concern is housing costs. Help me understand how Raleigh can be considered affordable and one of the best places to live with housing costs as they are? In South Bend I own my home a 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath, 1950's built with a basement that I bought for $88K in 2015. How do I wrap my head around going from a mortgage of under $700 to a 1 bedroom apartment over $1,000?! Understanding the situation in small town Indiana is different just like renting vs. buying is usually more as well?

      @EllenPitts  Pƙed 3 lety +2

      I think you would really like Raleigh, but our affordability is relative. Compared to other large cities like NY, LA, Boston, etc. it is very cheap here. But we are definitely more expensive than some other places. Our median home price is well over $300k. You couldn't even find a piece of land without a house in Raleigh for $88,000.

      @@EllenPitts That's what scares me! I've gotten so accustomed to my lifestyle on my current income which likely wouldn't change much just because I relocate. @@deandrakirkwood8319 I totally understand your fear!! It is such a hard decision to uproot your life, sometimes leaving family and friends behind to take a big risk with a relocation....there is no perfect place. There will always be things we give up to get some better things. And sometimes we don't make the right decision. But we just have to trust our instincts and be willing to take some risks...some pan out and some don't. But we always learn, adjust our sails a little and keep going.
      Many of the new videos I will be doing are going to be focusing on this idea... because I don't think you are the only person feeling this way. I'll be talking to people who have made big moves, how it changed their lives...the good and the bad. Everyone's situation is different but I think these stories will help people find the things that relate to them and make better decisions for their own lives.
