Chris Stapleton transcends the label of country artist that has been placed on him. He is bridges all genres, country, blues, rock.
Well said!
Agree- Chris is essentially his own genre - Blues, soul, country, rock, R&B all together 🦅🔥🦅🔥🦅
Chris Stapleton said it best when someone asked him what genre he is, his response was I'm Chris Stapleton.
I work in the entertainment industry.. Chris is the real deal.. I've seen on more than one occasion him come off stage and personality thank every local stagehand he sees for their hard work .. a genuine man of the people
There is no question about that. He's an artist, not a star. He wants nothing more than the best for everyone. In fact your extolling his virtues would embarrass him.
I actually saw him that last weekend, and he told the crowd to give a standing ovation to the stage crew. He's a real dude. And better live than on the radio.
I'm from Alabama. I play rock n' roll and every cowboy country singer I ever met had the most utmost respect for Prince. We'll never see that much talent in one human in our lifetime ever again. Prince could dance, sing, write songs and play every instrument on the stage. Much respect! History will study Prince 100 years from now.
This tribute was not only respectful but beautiful. This Prince fan approves. Great job Chris. We miss him more than words can say.
Who cd compose such beautiful songs ? ONLY PRINCE 😓😓 Miss him so much ! The BEST ever 💜💜💜💜💜💜💋💋💋
He performed this once, It was two days after Prince's death. He did it in Berkeley, live.
"I don't think you can exist in music and not have been influenced by him. His music has been a part of the musical psyche for the entirety of
my life," - Stapleton
Man Chris Stapleton hits me in my soul. Ugh.....he is completely sick.
I’m with you brother. The guy is amazing.
I was at this show! Greek Theater in Berkeley CA. The show was the Saturday after Prince died on Thursday. So Chris had basically 2 days to learn and memorize and play this song live. It was absolutely magical!!! He actually apologized for maybe not getting it right before starting but we all know he nailed it!!!!
Anything Chris Stapleton does is worth a hear.
The song absolutely lends itself well to that country aesthetic. And Chris Stapleton's vocals are a uniquely exceptional ode to the song's iconic reputation.
Chris Stapleton is in a genre all on his own. He doesn't just sing, he sangs. He is perfect. He is also completely humble & a very kind human being. Chris is the real deal. Chris was blessed with raw talent that supersedes everyone in the music industry. Chris could sing the menu at the Waffle House & it would be awesome. I love everything he has done. Every single song he has sung or wrote is a hit to me. Chris Stapleton is phenomenal.
Chis doesnt just sing...he sangs, he has a complete understanding and feel of The Blues and that makes him a genius. But i think this song proves, yet again, the superb genious of Prince. He gave this song to Shinead O'Connor and her haunting, saddness made it a galactic hit. Then Prince recorded it and, of course, Princed it up and it was amazing. What an amazing tribute to Prince' outstanding genius. Thank you Chris for giving us your gift. And btw: how bout that harmonica on a Prince song...love it!
And not just any harmonica player, but possibly the greatest harmonica player of all time, the great Mickey Raphael.
I absolutely love Chris. Prince was a musical master. He played the guitar like no on else. Not many know that. I am 50 and remember Prince well. Now we have Stapleton being the master he is. Love both versions.
Dude just slays everything he does!! His song Either way is soul crushing
Facts. That song is HEAVY. Too bad half the casuals I see reacting to it think its sone sweet love song or something.
@@Jr_5646 agreed!!
Soul Crushed and he wrote it.
@@Jr_5646 yes they miss that one part in the song and it changes it for them. Really have to pay attention to the lyrics. Its a must otherwise it loses everything. I mean everything
they heard "I will love you either way" where he actually says "I won't love you either way"
lol just one misheard word and magically the deeply heartwrenching sad song turns into a sweet love song lol
You can never go wrong with Chris no matter which song it is
Oh my goodness I never thought anyone could do a song by Prince until now wow
No matter the colour, no matter the age, no matter the style, no matter the perspective, RESPECT of music is easy, sit back relax and think MUSIC is the perfect way to move on in life as has touched us all one way or another. Again respect to the commentary by this fine young man whom puts input into wisdom of life. Love music love the song, feel the talent in the power of the players.
Chris is a EXCELLENT singer/songwriter, but he's also a really great guy that's painfully shy too. Listen to him sing with his wife and the hair's will stand up on your arms/neck... AMAZING STUFF! Years ago I walked away from one of his shows truly amazed at the man & his music😎👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I've never heard a bad rendition of this song. Chris Cornell does my personal favorite, but they're all soulful, beautiful versions. There's something about the song itself I think that only the most truly emotionally invested can deliver it and everyone knows not to try to imitate. You gotta feel this song deep in your bones to even attempt it.
There is something special about this song. I think there's so much pain that any version is going to work.
Chris Cornell’s version is the closest to perfection I think we the people have gotten. Stapleton’s is interchangeably in that spot as well. Couldn’t agree more with your comment
You hit the nail on the head. Emotional investment is necessary
Mad skills. This dude sings live better than most recorded artists today. A REAL musician.
IMHO, Prince was my generations musical genius. This tribute was my introduction to Chris Stapelton and I love it.
I love how he takes Prince's song and doesn't try to imitate him but makes it in his own style in tribute. Great clip. BTW love your voice smooth as silk.
Yeah he does the Chris Cornell Version
@@MrJesusHKrist no, he does the Chris Stapleton version.
@@garymaidman625 yeah Chris Stapleton was also doing the Chris Cornell version...
@@MrJesusHKrist no, Chris Stapleton did Chris Stapleton's version.
@@garymaidman625 Here's how it goes Prince writes the song give it to Sinead O'Connor which I turn inspired Prince to release it himself those inspired Chris Cornell and Liz Phair to do versions which inspired Chris Stapleton to do a version of the song where st the concert I saw he specifically mention Prince and being inspired by Chris Cornell's version that he added a little something to.
Thank you for introducing me to Chris Stapleton !!!! I’m a fan of Country Music and Prince ! This was awesome.
I love watching your reaction. Chris Stapleton brings out all the emotion in your body.
Chris Stapleton is a seriously accomplished songwriter. Prince was a musical genius, hence the tribute and recognition by a fellow musical genius!
His rasp is like he is chewing on a rusty nail! Love this version. Could listen to Chris sing all day and not get bored! 😁💚💙🌍
Prince passed away on April 21, 2016, Chris performed this on April 23, 2016. You should also check out his tribute to Aretha Franklin where he performed a cover of "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man", it is INCREDIBLE.
Simply extraordinary...
Going to find that now
IT WAS! Mr Stapleton cover of Aretha Franklin made me a fan of his. He is a prime example of being a real artist. He can sing ANY genre and do it justice!
His version of Waylon Jennings's I Ain't Living Long Like This is pretty damn good too. As is his version of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Simple Man.
@Yance Taylor ikr!? But I'm just now realizing that he put sooo much into those 57 years....maybe Tyka was right. He told her he did everything he came here to do..
Past ready for the Iowa State Fair concert! I purchased 2 tickets back in November 2019 as a Christmas gift to myself. All good things come to those with patience! Super ecstatic, I feel like a kid again...counting down the days! 😘🤙
What so many don’t understand is Chris has been around for a long time, he just wasn’t that popular bc he wrote instead of performed. Once he began to perform a few of his songs did he get the recognition he deserves. He’s insane! It’s effortless the way he belts out those notes and he can slay a guitar. The guy is superbly talented.
I have become a big Chris Stapleton fan from listening to your reviews.
I feel you ! I am from the Prince generation and even Prince gave this song away long before he himself recorded and released it. This song was written for a voice like Chris Stapleton's he slays it!
Prince, wrote, composed and performed every instrument that his band would eventually play with him. There was no mold for Prince, he created himself! To dare cover his music takes huge self confidence. Chris does it his own way masterfully. No disrespect in what he does here. He honors Prince.
I've said it before; Prince was among the best guitar players in the world, if not the best but he was underrated! We lost a tremendous ICON when he passed. Like Jimmy Hendrix though, he left behind so much unrecorded music that we will discover his beauty through songs for decades.
Thank You for sharing this tribute.
Hoka Hey
Betty Wright, " NO PAIN NO GAIN" unreal.
Loved it! Love Chris Stapleton! In my opinion he will be the artist of this century.
You have to watch Chris Stapleton sing fool me!! It is unbelievable... Unreal... No words can describe!
I almost forgot his cover of the Allman Brothers "Whipping Post". It is straight blues fire.
His version of the Elton John song I Want Love is amazing too.
Thanks guys im going to check it out!
The 1990 Sinead O'Connor version, is the definitive version of this song for me. Perhaps because I was at an age where I was actually starting to pay attention to music, and seeing music videos on Top of the pops (UK TV show for chart music) and just seeing the emotion in that very simple music video I think blew my little mind. Plus, the way I see it, Sinead was one of the pioneers of getting that Celtic / Irish vocal style into the mainstream which we still hear artists using even today.
💗💝💗🤗
She song it the best hands down..plus l loved her back then
@@apachedream3080 absolutely. I just connected with it instantly
great performance. Prince was amazing, but Chris is just... wow. I would love to hear him cover "Wicked Game" by Chris Issac.
Chris Stapleton is an incredible force. Prince was golden. I am brought to tears.
#CHRISSTAPLETON 's voice is not only got that raspy growl.. He sings with such HEART n SOUl.. Ya can close your eyes and feel his Passion in his music.. Hands down one of the MOST ICONIC Singers EVER.. I wish I was a fraction as good.. I have that same rasp..but not mastered by any way shape or form.. I'm like the Apprentice's Servant
Man could sing the dictionary and hold audiences captive.
His rasp is grounded with sultry volume. WOW he must know the journey through LOVE. ICONIC vibes.
One of the, if not the greatest musician of our time. More talented than thirty of the so called top 40 put together
Prince was always one of my FAVORITE singers, but I will admit that Chris Stapleton did an absolutely amazing rendition. What a tribute to the late great Prince. 🤗💜
I'm coming unglued w excitement to hear these 'two artists together '. Omgish!! Miss princes so deeply.
The harmonica stirs in me the history of America. Love it. I cannot say anything that hasn't been said of Mr. Stapleton.
THIS IS NOTHING SHORT OF AMAZING!!!! YOU ROCK CHRIS
I absolutely LOVE Chris Stapleton's voice, it speaks to my soul. I love You Are My Sunshine that he sings with his wife Morgan Stapleton.
Wow!!! I had no clue he covered this song… I’m 38 years old & Sinead O’Connor’s version is still my favorite… Don’t get me wrong Stapleton has these amazing soul crushing pipes that make you weak in the knees… he’s so consistent and the quality is immaculate! But I think Sinead’s voice is either emotionally nostalgic for me or I’m just being biased, lol! I’m seeing Stapleton Dec 5th in Knoxville this year & I’m ecstatic! I happened to be in Gilford, NH when he performed there with his wife, Morgane. I’m praying she’s also performing with him in December 🤞🏻… together, they’re breathtaking.. Surprisingly, I’m not a big country fan, but if a singer or lyrics can touch me in such a way, I can’t ever get enough of it. Thank you for your hard work & this channel… & thank you for showing me this version of one of my favorite songs…. Chris Cornel’s version is another personal favorite & that’s definitely because I’m biased. I’ve been a Soundgarden fan since 10 years old.. Luckily saw Soundgarden live at Red Rocks, Colorado in 2011… Amazing!
He has that old school soul voice. Ear Candy!!!
Nothing can ever top princes version but damn chris just has that once in a lifetime voice.
I'm a huge Prince fan, but this version has so much more feeling and heart
Prince wrote so many songs that he did not even sing. Man was genius.
Most song writers do that
@@granthogg2824 yeah but did those songs top the charts while he was topping the charts.
Almost as many as Chris Stapleton lol
The difference is that this song can be sung by completely different singers in totally different genres (Stapleton vs Sinead vs Chris Cornell vs Prince) and sound all new and just as amazing from each individual artist. That's a special kind of songwriting.
He wrote Manic Monday for the Bangles.
Prince was much more than OK. LOL. He was absolutely amazing!
That being said, I love Chris' version as well.
Fantastic! Chris Cornell's is still my favorite.
MrLBoyd … Sir … Let me just say Kudos to you for stepping, … No , JUMPING outside of the box to
showcase Talented artists from a wide variety of genres! Thank you for exposing many of us to artists we wouldn’t typically listen to! THANK YOU for reminding us that Great Music comes from the soul regardless of where on earth you come from, what age, race or label you want to put on is. Learning to listen to each other is a Healing process for All of Us! Thank you again for sharing! ☮️💖
I can't find one bad performance or song by Chris Stapleton. His "rasp" is indeed addictive. It touches a cord in my soul.
Chris Stapleton is a generational voice… it’s like a Sam Cooke, Etta James, etc type voice
Sam Cooke has influenced SO MANY OF THE GREATS- ITS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN the talent great and THE GIFT!
Couldn't agree more. And I'm glad you mentioned Sam Cooke. I regard him as one of the greatest voices in music.
No Tyler Childers and Colter Wall have voices of a generation Chris Stapleton is pretty good he was better with the Steel Drivers
I concur.
That voice along with that sound of that electric guitar is powerful.
The first time I heard this song Sinead O’Connor sang it, the video they did for this song was beautiful.
All I wanted to do was fall in love with Sinead O’Connor and protect her from pain.
Yes I thought Sinead was brilliant
One of the best vocalists ever.
Live Chris Stapleton is complete fire!!!
Contagiously addictive...exactly! Nothing compares.
BREATH. SUPPORT.
Can’t sing that way without shredding your chords without it, he’s unbelievable.
Love the natural distortion in his voice. Love his influences Aretha Franklin and Ms. Etta James. I am a Prince fan. May they all RIP.
Chris is the best, or my favorite singer on the planet right now in my opinion. PRINCE IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE, pure genius amazing man!
Sinead O'Connor did a great job on this one, but I'm certain Prince is very proud of the way Chris did this cover. He did it to truly honor a great man and pay homage to him and his many contributions to the world as a whole, but especially the music industry. Well done, Chris Stapleton, well done
I love Chris Stapleton. One of my all time favorites... That being said.... my favorite performance of this song goes to Chris Cornell. It's haunting and filled with a pain that bleeds from CC's soul. You feel every bit of the song when he sings it.
Puddles.
Did Mr. LB's comment about Prince being more of his mother's music make anyone else feel old?? 🤣 Purple Rain ranks right up there with U2 Live Under a Blood Red Sky from Red Rocks as a couple of the biggest musical moments of my young life.
He could sing the phonebook and make it sound amazing. Generational talent. Check out Death Row, Barely Alive, Cold, Amanda with his wife Morganne.
Chris Stapleton is a great rhythm and blues musician!
The power of live music
This man has true Talent 👍
so glad you like Chris!!!!!!he's our soulbrother kindred spirit methinks...thanks for this not heard before by mr.stapleton.
Chris’ “rasp” is like a belt-sander on a stick of butter……..
I knew butter had to be in there somewhere.
I tell my Grandpa all the time that his rasp sounds like a chainsaw bein drug through a gravel alley while it's still on
Can't ever get enough of this mans rasp
Chills up my spine ! Yeah thats Chris Stapleton what a voice one In the world !!
Chris is mesmerizing. Just check out his bass player.
He has to be one of the best ever singer!
I love watching your face as you listen! You a blues blood baby!
My god, his voice!
Prince is my first music love. Sometimes it snows in April breaks me every time ❤️❤️❤️
A true tribute...not a cover. Amazing.
I love that we also get a front row seat to the bass player's epiphany of what he's a part of.
You know it's right when you get the stank face. If tears too? He touched your soul with that voice.
Mr. Lboyd. Wow. Just. Wow. You made me finally have my first senior citizens moment. Deep breath here. You actually said, “Prince was way before my time.....” Like, my damn! I just turned 65 (shout out class of 1974!), and had the utmost pleasure of meeting the the G.O.A.T. three times in my life. And always came away with two distinct impressions- that I was in the company of greatness, and that he was so “regular.” But be that as it may, I fell down the Chris Stapleton rabbit hole some three years ago and love all the qualities that you mentioned. But I beg to differ in your reaction. My first, I might add. But Prince is Prince and NOTHING COMPARES TO HIM!
I watch JT and listen to Chris during this video. Such a phenomenal performance!
Prince ain't dead, he just went home.
Prince is applauding from music heaven.
It's heart warming to me that these entertainers pay tribute to each other. I found one the other day from James brown singing love me tender tribute to Elvis.
I second that...Chris can own any song he sings too not all singers can come close or do better then the orginal!
Dear MrLBoyd, when you stated that you like Chris Stapleton’s tribute better than the original Prince and The Family track may be attributed to a few factors, at least these are my reasons.
1) Chris’ rasp has a special feeling quality to it. It’s the melodically warmness and feeling like he’s giving you everything he’s got when doing so.
2) coupled with the rasp are his pinpoint perfect and unique stank face creating bluesy runs wherein only Etta James seems to hold a natural candle.
3) and all those things work towards his genuineness that emulates through his vocal as he feels and believes and dwells on every word and emotion.
Those are all special qualities and when you have a song like this, with exquisitely perfectly true and often heart wrenching lyrics, along with a slow pace that allows a lot of room to play in, and it’s just something Chris will make magical.
Prince was amazing and unique and quirky, and the original with him is stellar, but lyrically and melodically Chris will always make it better.
On a final note, it’s also Chris’ clearly honoring and respecting the original by throwing in that falsetto and other aspects that would not be present in a Stapleton original that helps make it even better than what it was already.
Respect to Chris and to you Mr Boyd and to the donor who requested this track.
Could not have said it better. Spot on!
Well said!!!
Chris's voice is captivating
Watching your videos here in South Africa just love u. And love love Chris Stapleton.
Chris Stapleton new song Cold is Fire:)
Chris has been song writing for a longgggg time. His catalog is filled with bangers that will keep you busy and entertained for a long while. Keep up this content! Always love Chris Stapleton reviews.
Singing it from the heart of a real man.
Sinead O’Connor’s version is amazing and haunting...Chris Stapleton delivers as well..
To the best of my knowledge Prince wrote this song...💜💜
Yes prince wrote it.. but Sinead truly made it famous. I would like to see Chris and Sinead kill this.
@@DaZ403 Chris Stapleton, despite having an extremely unique and standout voice, is shockingly good at blending with collaborators with very different vocal types. A Stapleton and O'Connor collaboration on this song would be incredible.
Love hearing different artists sing other artists song , but his Tennessee Whiskey makes me wish I had someone to dance with
Prince sang it beautifully too! ❤️
The purple lights changed to a shade of blue the moment they shone down on Chris... 💙
Prince recorded in 1984 but didn't release it. He had his band "The Family" release it on their album in 1985. I had the cassette and played this album to the tape wore out. Entire album was fire.
