    Hi Chuck,
    Great review! amazing! I like how you point to every single detail. Hopefully the manufacturers take your advice for the Kawai VPC2, if it gets created.
    I agree with you, the idea of Kawai with this virtual piano controller was to give the illusion of playing a real piano. The visual issue with the cables, it actually kills that illusion.
    I loved the VPC1, it's an ultra-realistic feel, but I returned it because it's really big for what I need right now playing on many different places. I also have a Roland A-88, which is discontinued, but, I think it is by far one of the best keybed I have ever played, probably better than some real pianos that I have played. I have also tried the Roland V-Piano, and the RD800 keybeds as well. Roland is great on this thing. I can tell the level of expression while play the A-88 is just amazing. With a good piano VST is more than fantastic. Unfortunately, as I said, it was discontinued. They realized the people is buying the controllers instead of the digital pianos, so they stopped producing it.
    Question: Would you review the Roland RD 2000 vs the Yamaha CP4?
    I would like to hear your conclusions.

    A number of your reviews have been very helpful to me Chuck, thank you and Happy New Year!
    I recently got my own VPC1 and it's a wonderful 'piano' controller! That Kawai would invest considerable time and resources in building this very classy musical tool for a niche market impresses me very much. IMO, adding wheels, sliders, knobs, MIDI splits, a display, or other 'features' would change the basic nature of the VPC1. I like it just the way it is.

    Hey Chuck, thanks for your comparison to a fine automobile. BEST TIP YET - RUNS OFF OF USB POWER! Thanks for the referral to the Ravenscroft/Ravenworks keyboards - I will check out those videos. Thanks for the "illusion" of "sitting at a grand piano" observation. The triple pedal - of course this video is six years old - on the newer MP11se (I'm sure you know this already), they do have the triple pedal in one jack plug, instead of two plugs. For a stand, yes, could be wider - I use an actual conductor's stand in my studio, that I put behind the keyboard and push it up flush against the back of the keyboard - that would eliminate your cable issue. Thanks for another great review! 😀

    Hi Chuck, enjoy your reviews and I love my VPC1 for all the same reasons. There is probably a good reason that the cable jacks are higher up on the unit and that's the space below is used up by the action. They may have ran out of room there and would have had to make the cabinet even wider to fit the connections lower down.

I had a VPC1 on order, based on another much less detailed review. I cancelled it because I feel like the Nord is just fine for me at this stage. But if they don't come out with a VPC2 in the next couple of years, I might feel like I've had my money's worth out of the Nord and order a VPC1 again. PianoManChuck - thanks for the great review! On the subject of placement of the connectors I understand your concerns - perhaps on the "VPC2" they could at least RECESS the connector area if they HAVE to keep its present higher location which might have something to do with concerns about clearance in certain situations, I don't know. In terms of the action, the VPC1 MAY have the best of the Kawai line in its RM3 Grand Action. If you like the VPC1 action better than the MP11's action then this could easily be the case because the Grand Feel action is not all that great. IMHO the reason why Ravenworks chose the VPC1 over any other keyboard as a starting point for their modifications was the fact that its action was second to none. Cheers and keep up the great work!

    • @PianoManChuck
      @PianoManChuck  Před 6 lety

      Ravenworks chose the VPC1 over any other CONTROLLER because it has the best piano action in a CONTROLLER keyboard. They would never choose a board that has its own sounds built in (ie: MP11) as that would defeat their purpose.

    Thanks a lot, after 10 years of searching and changin piano every six motnhs, I've finally found what I was looking for thanks to you.
    And even without trying it, just by trusting you.
    Now I have a question.
    To go gig around, now I'm using the Yamaha CP4, i love its sound but I'm feeling like I'm not sotisfied by its action.
    I was looking for the Studiologic Numa Concert.
    Do you have a review of it? Do you think its action is better than CP4.
    As a classical pianist I need to feel, like on my grand, that my muscles can relax at the bottom of the key. Yamaha CP1 has this feature (but costs too much), Kawai VPC1 has it too.
    I had a lot of other digital pianos (including the Kawai MP7) and I haven't found it in any other.
    Plus, I've noticed that it must be related to the use of springs instead of weights in order to make them lighter and easier to carry around. So, of course, I wouldn't move the 30kg of Yamaha CP1, but I wonder if Studiologic Numa Concert, with its 20 kg, it's the right compromise.
    I trust you, your review of the VPC1 is so good to me, that I can say that we have a similar approach to piano.
    Once more thanks a lot, you ended my endless search!

      yeah, I know... I considered it. The main reason is really because of the VPC's design. I have a keyboard that I use for a controller in my home studio that has a wide flat top (Yamaha P150) that I put my computer keyboard & mouse on, and am able to have a couple monitors for my ProTools up there, as well. I couldn't do that with an MP11, due to the physical layout of the controls. That's the reason in a nutshell...that setup works great for me, ergonomically.
      And, also.. I do have an MP7SE that I use on gigs and sessions, as well as in my studio. I like it a lot, but I'm not really able to use it in a permanent setup like I'd like to.

    Aren't most softpiano samples midi mapable? You could have your two preferred piano samples with a split point that blended somewhat near the split point to make the transition super smooth. Regarding the music rack. I have to make my own with any controller I use. I need a flat large surface to write on that can tilt. A few I've designed can slide inward and some that can hang over the keys for ease of notating ideas (one doesn't need much space for wrist travel when composing) If one is directing a show one needs the rack almost flat for a better view. I never expect any manufacturer to get a music rack right.

    Excellent review ! The point I would slightly challenge is your suggestion about zones split as the VPC1 other than action management delegates all other fonction to external software which is a genius strategy as the keyboard always stays actual and you can upgrade the sound and other effects when more powerful VST or sequencers arrive on the market .
    You can achieve a split with a good sequencer , for instance if you use reaper you can affect a midi range to a particular instrument .
    Also I m not sure it is such a good idea to split the zones with 2 different sampling of acoustic pianos as it’s going to mess up the sympathetic resonance unless you suppress it which would be a shame. Split works well in gigs when you want to use a bass in the lower part and a piano in the upper voice .
    Other than that , all the points are spot on . Keep going on , you channel is great 👍

    • @PianoManChuck
      @PianoManChuck  Před 2 lety +1

      You're assuming software/sequencer is the target output of the VPC1. There are many cases where keyboard players want to have 1 (or more) other physical MIDI instruments as their target devices... or even a combination of software and another physical MIDI instrument.

    • @joaoterceira9671
      @joaoterceira9671 Před 2 lety

      @@PianoManChuck errrr yes I am, because in the example you give in your video, you mention 2 acoustic pianos which obviously can only be achieved by sampling software ;) Now, If you want to control multiple physical electronic instruments you are right it wouldn't work , but then not only you need be able to split zones but also to assign it separate Midi through outputs as you cannot use the midi channel information to dissociate the split, as the info is going to be passed to two independent devices. Even a Korg Kornos which is really designed for stage performance has only 1 Midi through.
      So I am not too sure about the use case

      @@PianoManChuck actually you are right , you would need a midi splitter to do that , but I have to say given the power of the workstations today , you are unlikely to see that in concert nowadays . See what variety of sounds Jordan Rudess can get from the Kronos keyboard . Although bear in mind that as soon as you want to introduce this functionality on the VPC1 you will need to implement a screen and possibly buttons as it wouldn’t make sense to use the piano keys to parameter it when you are playing ( similarly to the way you switch between velocity setups) so you would affect the purity of the keyboard’s look and feel which contributes to make it unique . Knowing Kawai very thorough process when it comes to innovation , features and quality , I wouldn’t surprise if it was discussed and an option and rejected for the reasons mentioned above I.e. limited use case and look of the keyboard .

    • @PianoManChuck
      @PianoManChuck  Před 2 lety

      You do NOT need a MIDI splitter - one MIDI cable hooked up to one MIDI device sends all 16 (if used) MIDI signals - that device uses the one signal it needs and passes the rest onto its MIDI OUT or THRU port to the next MIDI device, etc. That's how MIDI works.

Can't give you a first-hand opinion though since I never tried one.

    Hi! Kawai vpc1 can be used as a slave keyboard? I have a kawai mp7se and it would be nice to combine the sounds with the rm3 II action

      VPC1 would actually be the 'controller' keyboard. Just connect its MIDI Out jack into the the MP7's MIDI In jack.

    Well ... imho, the only negative point is the price ... one day I hope to be able to complain about the cables. BTW, the probable reason for the 2 jacks is the sustain pedal is probably analogic.

    • @joonks7373
      @joonks7373 Před 7 lety

      You want an audio interface. An Audio Interface will have a better sound card and analogue to digital converter, both of which will improve your sound.
      Most Audio interfaces also have midi in/out connections but plugging the keyboard directly to your computer via USB would be better and then just change you audio preference settings to the input and outputs of you Audio interface instead of you computers internal soundcard.

    Hey, Chuck! Could you please tell/beg/persuade Kawai to make a VPC2, with Pitch and Mod wheels? After all, it is indeed a "controller", and "piano-only" keyboards only satisfy one part of the market.
    Others have commented about other negatives, so I wouldn't mention those; I can live with those, by the way.
    Please; Pitch and Mod wheels would take this machine to the next level!
    Thank you!

    Seems to me you were struggling to find complaints about this keyboard. I think that's a good thing.
    Seeing wires just add a small strip of rigid plastic (like from a set of black mini blinds) and attach that to the stand to cover the gap.
    Assigning different instruments to different keys should entirely be a function of the software midi package. Worst case the ravenscroft software should allow you to create a brand new midi patch set yourself to use.
    An upgrade to the GF action with the longer lever length may well be a good enough reason to wait for the VPC2.
    I'd also love to see a very simple on/off programmable midi to audio device that contains sample sets like the ravenscroft software has. That would simplify part of the chain. Of course I haven't looked around for such an animal yet.
    Great review thanks!

    • @PianoManChuck
      @PianoManChuck  Před 10 lety

      Thanks for your comments! So far, there's no indication of a forthcoming VPC2, but I suppose if enough people voice their needs to Kawai, maybe they'll listen!
      Correct about splits, but it would be nice to set a split point that will send on the next MIDI channel from the split point up. As for MIDI to audio devices, there used to be hardware (rack mount) versions of earlier keyboards which you would MIDI up to in the past in order to get their sample sets, but those seem to have evaporated off the market!

    The MP11SE has a much better action and a lot of other capabilities for around $900 more. It's well worth the extra cost. The VPC1 is a rip off that Kawai refuses to upgrade.

    • @RA-el6zj
      @RA-el6zj Před 4 lety +3

      Much better action? What are you talking about? It's pretty much the same action with a longer pivot point.
      Some people even prefer the vpc action because the gf is lighter.
      I'd say the gf action is a bit better because of the pivot, but both are great.

    • @maulcs
      @maulcs Před 3 lety +2

      @@RA-el6zj Yeah, I've seen many posts of people preferring the VPC1's action. Just from what I've seen in videos, the MP11SE action looks light, and slow to rebound - overly bouncy. "Spongy" is also a word I've seen used. The VPC1's action looks more solid, closer to an acoustic grand. Pivot point is only one aspect, and it doesn't affect playing most of the time. Shaun Choo, who is an amazing pianist (/watch?v=PmrDjhjfTb8), said he hadn't even noticed the weight difference between the front and back of the keys. He also has a grand piano right in his apartment that he can compare it to.

    Can we have one with WHEELS, please? The MPs 7 and 11 have all the sounds that we don't need, but they have wheels. Many of us already have sounds (that we like), but the cheezy controllers are a pain.
    Finally, a controller that reportedly feels very good, but no wheels?! Come on, man! SMH :D

    • @PianoManChuck
      @PianoManChuck  Před 8 lety +1

      +Derry Etkins While that would be nice, the VPC1 is not designed for anything but a Pianist (pianos don't have wheels). Kawai has outdid themselves in designing this controller for PIANIST's. Anything with a wheel would defeat that purpose... but would be great for the Keyboardist (which would be a different model).

      This is a PIANO CONTROLLER - not a synth or keyboard controller. Its designed exclusively for concert pianists and other professional pianists. Pianos don't have pitch or mod wheels. Its a huge success for their intended target audience. If you want something with even better keyboard action with pitch/mod wheels, get an MP11se or a used MP11.
