- I go over a list of about 140 films, 40 of which I've seen, most of which are horror or have horror elements, and many of which can be described as relaxing, atmospheric, psychological, slow burn, slow paced, minimalist, minimal dialogue, experimental, surreal, lo-fi, and analog. There are some exceptions such as Pontypool which is a great horror flick that's a bit heavy on the dialogue (though it's justifiable).

The Love of Atmospheric, Slow Burn, Psychological, and Surreal Horror Films is okay, but for me, it is the McChicken. The best fast food sandwich.
Never stop commenting this, you might be a bot but you're a damn good one🤣🤣
Buy one delicious life saver sandwich, get one for a dollar
It really Is the best fastfood sandwich. You can never go wrong with a McChicken 👍
Get Wendy’s in here! 😂💀
Hey man, in the least creepy way I can say this, I was thinking about you, the one and only McChicken lover, the other day. Glad to know you’re still around.
I’ve never been a big fan of horror movies. But I think the original Alien is one of the best movies ever. It’s so suspenseful and the xenomorph is a legendary movie monster that’s still popular today
“Right.”
So true
Killer android too
It just got added to Dead By Daylight. Been super fun to play
I ain't gone cap.... I lay down some nice pipe yuh hurrrr me?
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is such a weird hidden gem of a movie so I was happy to see that on your thumbnail.
Two not on the mentioned list that I would highly recommend are Crash and The Lure.
ER is always top-notch, can’t wait to watch this
Oh snap! If you'd like another suggestion for a slow-burn horror, check out The Empty Man. Like a David Fincher horror with lots of atmosphere.
Hidden gem, such an underrated movie
he mentioned that one! 😅
Two of my favorite things combined into one video: Surreal cinema and ASMR! You’re amazing, ER!
The opening scene of blade runner 2049 is amazing. Nothing but ambience and atmosphere. Quiet, dark, lived in. Perfect.
Super dark times is a gem. I highly recommend it even if it's not for everybody
Cure is one of the best horror films in my opinion, the atmosphere it is able to create towards the end of the movie is crazy
ER I think you would love the film Cure (1997) by Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Its a slow paced, atmospheric and psychological horror film about a detective uncovering a series of crimes in Japan.
he mentioned it on his "to watch"-list
I would highly recommend Ex Machina, as it closely matches with your description of spacing out action and dialogue. It definitely has an aspect of psychological/existential horror to it. I had the chance to watch it as part of a class on the history of sci-fi, and my jaw was on the floor by the end.
An excellent film
@@gadd1111yeppp
Because of the boobs right.
So happy to see Saint Maud in the thunbnail, I really enjoyed that movie a lot, I also finally saw Hereditary after watching hours of analysis videos, I enjoy a lot of horror and the subtext and themes of it, I personally think horror is the best medium to express ones self
Facts, Saint Maud is a great film
I have yet to see Hereditary, but I've heard nothing but good things about it.
A good day involves
Good Ass Food
Some good ass fuckin weed
And laying down some mean ass pipe in a bitch
I feel like Rift videos could fall into the lofi horror/comedy category. The videos have studio quality sounds and all the characters are just a bit unsettling and the plots that have plenty of horror details. And yet all the videos are so relaxing!
The only horror movie I am scared shitless of, is called "The day ER stops uploading"
Seems like you did see and use my list. Very glad to know that! "November" is a gem of the Estonian cinema and deserves more attention.
those low whispers at the start were so relaxing!! amazing video as always ❤
Stalker is one of the only movies I can genuinely call an "experience." It is the most unique film I've ever seen. Modern directors have so much more at their disposal, yet create drastically less immersive movies.
I've seen pretty much every movie you talked about except for a few and I'm so happy you made this video, it really felt like chatting with a friend about movies. Out of all of these though, mad god surprised me the most, god damn
Another banger, Def looking forward to seeing all your suggestions. Wife and I wanted to get the ball rolling on some horror movies!
This is so perfect this past year I have really been exploring this genre of film (I just watched the witch last night) so this will definitely be my new reference guide!! You always nail it!
“Caché” from Michael Haneke. French film from 2005. Probably right up your alley
Rift doing the "precautionary measures" at the beginning gave me great tingles. A video where he does a mock ritual with us included would be so cool!
Watch both of the Suspiria movies or at least the 1977 original, it's the one of the most beautiful horror movies I've ever seen with a crazy soundtrack.
With silence being the ultimate trigger in the universe, or at least in the same breath, this video is a treasure trove of such sensations in film.
Also, Infinity Pool was a highlight for me this year. Glad to have seen it uncensored.
I love your understanding and very same level view of science fiction and horror. Thank you for being you man.
I love ending my days with a fresh cup of protective Erdrich incantations and dash of salt! :)
I almost spat out my dang drink when I saw this notification , my favorite asmrtist talking about my ultimate special interests, surreal psychological horror movies?????? I am freaking out in the best way right now
This upload schedule is on point
That preparation on startup was awesome!
Remember when this video was called „treasure trove of movies"
These are some of my favorite types of videos! hope you're doing well ER, sending you good fall vibes
I'm very happy to have this heading into October. I needed some ideas for my own watchlist. Awesome video!
Loved the intro of this video, the wispers were so good!
You should try painting surreal art. Your already both a painter and a master of surreal art, i think youd make some great ones
I know it's likely not the same thing, but you should read House of Leaves if you havent already. I get very similar vibes of horror from that book reading through it
Seriously, house of leaves is such an interesting horror book. It doesn't fully fit horror in my mind, just horrific realism, if that makes sense? Not like ghosts or demons, but just strange things
@@pallic703horrific realism is a great descriptor. I’ve been calling it cosmic drama, along with things like Cloud Atlas and anything that evokes strange forces that are indifferent or random rather than malevolent but I like horrorific realism to distinguish the more eerie ones
@@pallic703well horror doesn’t need goblins and ghouls, lots of horror is just an angry dude with a knife running around scaring and killing people
Never been one to lie up on the NET but God blessed me in a very intimate way to say the least he made me a snake handler fo sho
House Of Leaves is a love story with horror elements.
If ER does read it, it needs to be the proper 1st edition with the coloured House text and page flipping chapters.
I can relate to a lot of what you said at the start. And I'm definitely going to check some of these movies out. They sound appealing to me.
Thanks Rift.
The creativity never ends, I love it :)
You have solid ass taste in horror my dude. The Innocents 1961, yes please!
ER! Been a big fan of you and followed you for well over a decade. I'm glad you made a video about movies like this.
If there's one movie that I think you'd like it is Andrzej Zulawski's Possession from 1981. It is right up your alley.
Many thanks for all your work throughout the years! You're an american national treasure.
The Ring (2002) is probably one of the best American film remakes in history. It's also more mystery than horror to me, and actually really depressing when you think about what happened to Samara.
It was horrible wdym...
@@Mongalingalongpeople have different opinions
This list is fantastic, Messiah of Evil (1973) fits your criteria- minimal dialogue, lots of long takes and walking through a seaside town, and the original 1960s Carnival of Souls also atmospheric and moody as hell, Messiah of Evil especially doesn’t get enough love imo.
You listed some great movies under the "to watch" list, but i'm going to recommend In The Earth of all those. It's such an interesting low-budget atmospheric horror movie filmed in the forest during the early days of the pandemic. I really wish more people knew about it so I'm suggesting it!
Got auper excited when i saw the notification. I absolutely live for this type of film
an ER wendigoon crossover would be insane
Love this compendium, ER. A quiet tour de force, as well as a first-in-class, I’d venture. :) Many thanks!
This ain’t really lofi horror but it is definitely a fun one, it’s called possession (1981) probably have heard of it. The way it’s filmed and acted is great in my opinion
Once Upon A Time in the West has such a cool vibe. Not a lot of dialogue and the dialogue thats there is usally satisfying/cool. Also the cinematagrophy is top notch.
Now that you mention it, a Silent Running RP would be fun.
Beyond The Black Rainbow is beautiful psychedelic thriller(?), but a VERY slow burn - big fan of everything Panos Cosmatos does. Highly recommend checking out his contribution to "Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities," called "The Viewing."
Pontypool has been a favorite of mine ever since it came out. I used to watch it at least once every winter. Wish there were more films like it.
Possessor is probably the best thing Brandon Cronenberg has directed yet, although I'm a bit biased because any kind of subtext commentary on work culture is going to be a hit with me.
Mad God is a hell of a drug. The kind of film that's technically amazing but leaves you feeling a little shell-shocked by the end.
Mad God is a fantastic film the amount of time it took alone is something to commend it’s pure art in the holiest form
@@Msooab Thinking about how much effort went into dressing nearly every scene boggles the mind, not to mention being the most grim dark setting I think I've ever seen. It's a masterpiece.
Im normally not a huge inaudible whispers fan but urs r so good 🫶
Gonna listen to this while i fall asleep and then hopefully watch it properly tomorrow because i love this sort of stuff
You might like a movie called, “Angel’s Egg”. It’s a very interpretive Anime film with one of my favorite vibes of all time.
Your channel is a masterpiece, all the way back to when you started.
Much Love, God Bless!
You should get into backpacking. Keeps things fresh for me and never fails to humble me and make me grateful for the comforts we all take for granted.
I wonder why this was taken down and reuploaded
This truly is a treasure trove of films uncle E :)
I regret not seeing this sooner
I saw this before it was re-uploaded. 😉, and as I said on that video, for 52 you're looking pretty good.
Rift you should check out Aftersun. It is not horror or psychological thriller really, rather a drama. But it has an element of mystery, as well as serene atmosphere and slow, quiet pacing and scenes. it is deeply emotional and beautiful. as a fan of your old movie-related videos I remember that you liked The Road and you may enjoy the father/child relationship portrayed in aftersun.
Falcon Lake is also a new release which might be up your alley as well. Great atmosphere, and some surreal/mystery elements
i think this feeling is far more general than just being old, in the past 3 or 4 years media consumption changed drasticly, and pretty affected the way we would previously like things.. i've seen those comments times and times, and i've also felt the same feeling
it's like the very slow, minimalist horror is perfect reponse to our media short attention span hyper active culture

First thing reading the title of this latest ASMR I thought, "No way, I hope he watched Skinamarink."
I love being right sometimes.
I have been waiting for the day that I would be jumpscared by asmr
The Witch is one of the most unsettling movies I've ever seen. I needed to watch some Bob Ross episodes before I went to bed.
I thought I was going insane after I saw this video yesterday and then not being able to find it. I guess it was just a mistimed upload.
loved the video. highly recommend universal soldier: day of reckoning, one of the best psychological horror films ive ever seen and its a part of an action franchise, no joke.
Awesome, another talk video. Love these.
The hairstyle reset is so close I can feel it!
As a movie lover, and especially horror movies, love this video!
Hey ER,
Glad you liked S.T.A.L.K.E.R., the games have a lot more of a militaristic and survival/scavengy vibe. I feel the gameplay can be like the film, walking through the Zone listening for anomalies and mutants. Exploring and methodically moving through the environment to be rewarded with other worldly artifacts for your stalker. You too, will learn the rules of the Zone and abide to them. I would recommend playing through them from the start vanilla but once you are familiar with game mechanics checkout the fan mod clients like Anomaly.
Mr. Rift, sir, mightn't I recommend Orson Welles’ “The Trial” (1962)? It is a Franz Kafka adaptation with visual ascetics not too dissimilar from "Eraserhead." It is bizarre, oppressive, brilliant, and obsurdly underrated.
Here is a few others you might like:
-“The Night of the Hunter” (1955)
-“Last Year at Marienbad” (1961)
-“Carnival of Souls” (1962)
-“Rosemary’s Baby” (1968)
-“Ravenous” (1999)
-“Eyes Wide Shut” (1999)
Enys Men is a Cornish (south west coast of England) movie and if you liked it I'd recommend the director Mark Jenkin's breakout film Bait (2019). Its more of a straight drama but the presentation is simply sublime, lots of scenes especially dialogue scenes are filmed in uncomfortably close close up with dubbed audio so everything has this oppressive unnatural quality that really elevates it
No one talks about Creep enough, that movie has infected my brain for the past ten years and I’m so, so happy to see it here. It’s my favorite horror by far because MAN those leads sell it.
I got really freaked out when I started this yesterday and it got pulled. Thought it was just top notch ARG shit
Creep is definitely a movie that ticks all the boxes of what you like, it’s low budget, atmospheric, no music, very disturbing and jarring, worth the watch
Hereditary is definitely one of the spookiest movies I've seen in a while if highly recommend that one. Midsommar is awesome too because the vibe is so different, it is a little slow though
I always try to avoid mainstream media reviews, analysis, film trailers, and other marketing, as it usually has little to do with whether or not a movie is my cup of tea. Often, the studio is trying to sell people on the idea that the film is something other than what it actually is, which can lead to disappointment upon viewing, or conversely discourage viewing a film one would actually enjoy. Recommendations from someone whose opinion I respect are primarily what I look to to find new films. I plan to print out the list of films in the description and highlight the ones that interest me. I love psychological horror movies but had no idea most of these existed.
A couple others I could see fitting into this list is “SuckerPunch” which is more of a thriller but it very much earns its namesake and also “Carnage” which is dialogue heavy but that’s mainly what’s on display there, not much else, it has John C. Reilly in it from the goofy Will Farrell movie but this movie show just how serious of an actor he can be
I've just finished watching session 9 for the first time. I think it fits the vibe of this list
ER will always be a gem
Its horror season baby!
Skinnamarink was FUCKED!! So horrifying it got stuck in my head like trauma. 10/10 amazing horror movie, I recommend going in blind
Yay it’s uploaded again!!!!
amazing taste as always
I hope you read this Mr ER and you know how much of an inspiration you are to me
All Is Lost, Robert Redford. Not a horror film, but Jesus Christ what a performance. Maybe 12 lines in the entire film.
What a masterpiece
so glad you loved skinamarink, papa E!
Why was this originally taken down? Just curious
The Wicker Man (1973) isnt listed in the description for people who missed it
I LOVE horror movies, asmr, and video games. Those are 3 of my top 5 favorite things arguably. I do like this type of horror movie...but I did absolutely despise Skinimarink 😅
you should definitely watch sleep has her house (2017). it's beautifully shot; sounds like it'd be the perfect match for you.
the face of another (1966) as well!
Me and a couple of my friends are really into the type of phycological horror movies you described in this video and have watched a handful of the movies you talked about and I thought you might appreciate a couple other suggestions.
The Platform (2019)
1BR (2019)
His House (2020)
In the Tall Grass (2019) (I know you mentioned it but it's really good I've seen it multiple times)
Hush (2016)
Oh my god I recently watched possum and wow it was a really good movie but definitely a heavy one though anyway love these type of videos!
If you haven't already seen it and love this genre I can't recommend shutter island enough. Absolutely wild psychological thriller. I haven't watched the whole video yet so I don't know if you end up mentioning it but really good film.
In some ways it's part of a trilogy with Revolutionary Road and Inception, regarding the marriage aspects of the films
Ive watched possum too, mainly because im a big dark place. Was surprised just how far away it was from any of the comedy he has made. So bleak, yet hugely compelling.
So I did try the fluffernutter and it was 10/10!
How the hell does he manage to make the topic of horror films relaxing?
Uncle E Is just better at ASMR
Let me recommend A Dark Song (2016). I watched this last night on whim and must say it touched most of these topics. It absolutely nailed the atmosphere.
2001 and Stalker are my favorite movies of all time ❤️
I love the Vince Gilligan esq opening shot
