Awesome production. I really like the vibes of this video especially in the intro that foggy seattle morning really sets the mood. I always thought it was the jaguar in all apologies, turns out I was wrong. Kurt probably used his phase 2 with a phase 3 humbucker in it which he used in roseland ballroom show (july). Really Hope you make some live show tone recreation ones, those are the most trickiest ones to nail down. Also can you do Pennyroyal tea or Scentless Apprentice next?
Thank you! I always enjoy reading your comments. Someone pointed out here in the comments that he was playing a phase II in Rio right before recording In Utero and it had the same P90 style in it. My guess is that would be it! I'll definitely start trying out some live tones in the future.
@@AaronRash I agree I’ve been able to nail all apologies on my guyatone lg127t which is a ripoff of the mosrite/hi flier and it has what I believe are hi flier p90s
I know this is an older video and I've been a fan since your first proper vid, but the way you transfer from acoustic to electric playing the riff is fucking beautiful, I keep rewinding and watching that bit lol. Love all the vids keep them up :)
Dude, you are INSANE! Like most here I've been trying to get these tones for years and you're absolutely nailing it every time. Would love it if you could have a crack at the Verse Chorus Verse tone, the cleans on that track are my favourite
You’re a really genuine dude! I love your videos and I wish I had friends like you, you go deep into figuring out Nirvanas sounds which I totally am thankful for because there’s too many unknowns…
If you stereo out of the Echoflanger with one clean and one effected signal going into each channel of the Quad Reverb, I believe you will have the tone for the Heart-Shaped Box verses. The very subtle dissonance in those chords I believe comes from one side of the signal having chorus lightly added to it, while the other side is completely clean. But maybe he’s going stereo out to two separate amps.
The guitar track for heart shaped box is double track, one with chorus and one with none. You can hear it on the Steve Albini mix where theres one track only
Aaron my dude you always nail these tone recreations and you’re right about the univox and the stock neck pickup. Steve albini mentioned that he used a “custom univox” for the sessions that earnie sent out because he just repaired it and im not convinced it was his “univox custom” that you mentioned with the 59 and jb but i believe it was the sunburst univox he had with the stock p90 in the neck and a univox phase 3&4 humbucker in the bridge. Thats what steve meant by “custom” and you can find a picture of this univox on google from the roseland ballroom show and supposedly the same one from rio 93 show before the bridge p90 was changed
Kurt never really used single coil hi flyers he either had phase 3s with stock univox humbuckers, or would swap humbuckers in, anyways the tone is accurate anyways so
Oh snap! Hell yeah man, you don't know how much I appreciate this, thank you!! I wasn't expecting it to be the hi flier at all tho, I too really thought it would have been the jag for some reason. I also remember reading somewhere (a long time ago) that kurt may have used an ibanez les paul copy on some of the in utero tracks? I know it sounds weird/out of character but i'm curious if you've ever heard that before?
I didn't expect it to be the flier either. I have read this about the Ibanez Les Paul copy but I'm doubting it ever was used on the In Utero sessions. The reason why is because Steve Albini on his AMA Nirvana thread said that the only guitars Kurt used were his competition mustang, his jaguar, the Hi flier (for most of it) the Veleno aluminum guitar for 1 song and also he had a hybrid custom guitar that was a mix between a mustang and jaguar (obviously that would be a jagstang) and that was it. I do wish for this video I would have turned on the bright switch on the Quad reverb though, it would have brought out the picking character a lot more. I have the bright switch capacitor out of circuit and just forgot to solder it back in! For me though, the hi flier just sounds way way too close for it not to be it. But anyways, I would believe what Steve says over anyone else, since he was actually there recording the whole thing.
I love your videos! You should do a Heart-Shaped Box and Rape Me tone, i always thought that both of them were recorded with the Hi-Flier and also it will be nice if you do a Nevermind guitar tone, or Bleach, that would be awesome!
any way you can do bass tones? i found that most of krist's tone is in his hands, since i can only get close to his tone with a certain picking hand positioning. paramount is really good but i've always wanted to get the live and loud tone. MAN that bass sounds mean. anyways, great video as always, man.
Hey Aaron, do you have any cheaper alternative suggestions for the Echo Flanger (Mr. Flangie) or even just another pedal that can recreate the Filter Matrix setting on it.
Dude. You're really good at distinguishing tones. I have a question which I haven't able to answer. I know that on in utero the turbo distortion pedal was used, but I can't tell for the life of me on which songs. I was thinking maybe pennyroyal tea. Anyways, can't wait for the whole series
@@AaronRashYou genuinely blew my mind telling me that the big muff was used on the album. I listened to it again and please tell me I identified Heart shaped box correctly as one of those songs :)) (And maybe rfus) Can't wait for the whole series! You're awesome!
+Aaron Rash what mic do you use for the IU stuff? I know Albini used a ton and its a big part of the IU sound, are there any mics that you found got you closest? Whatever mic you've been using sounds very close
Would a fender champion 100 have any similarities in these recordings? I really don't have 2k to spend and was wondering if from anything you've tried if it would work for nirvana tones
I just bought Silverface 68 deluxe, i know there might be some difference in tone between twin and regular deluxe, but can you share your bass and treble settings for rape me and heart shaped box.
Hey Aaron, is your HiFlier a Univox Custom? The reason I ask is because I don't think those came in white, and I can't see if the headstock has the univox logo or not. Beautiful guitar either way. BTW, do you use 250k or 500k pots considering you now have a regular single coil on the neck and a HB on the bridge? Cheers!
Hi Leandro. Mine is actually a Arai 1902T I believe its called. It's the exact same thing as a regular Phase 1 Hi-Flier. The only difference is the Arai was branded for the Australian market and the Univox was the American market. They were made in the same factory at the same time though. I haven't checked the pots but they are whatever came stock. Probably 250K
@@AaronRash Ohh yes, I actually have a Raven Hi flier, which is also a Matsumoku made guitar, like univoxes, arias, etc. Very cool guitars without the Univox price tag.
You mean to tell me there were 7 other pissedoffporcupines? I prefer the rain and fog but you don't have thunderstorms in Seattle, I can't live without them. You should name your guitar the most beautiful name in the whole wide world "Jenny."
you’ve GOTTA do i hate myself and want to die
it’s INSANE to me how good you are at this
Wow thank you!! I'll definitely do it 🤟🏻

Thanks! don't worry it's coming soon
@@AaronRash sounds good man, cant wait to hear it
Kurt had the Univox Phase II (that you can see at the Rio’s gig), I think he used his Phase II instead of the Custom for the In Utero recording.

I dont think that amount of speakers should affect the sound, except the headroom. It must have almost the same tone stack.
@@WeLmSoN It should definitely sound similar! I think I usually just max out the mids and treble and usually leave the bass around 4
Milk it?
love the videos
You know I think it's called Seattle because of the fog - you can't see the sea at all hahahaha
Hey bro what string gauge do you use cause Idk what to put on mine and your hi flier sounds really sick
thanks man! I have some GHS Boomers 10-52 on my hi flier
Hmmm, I still have the neck pickup from when I did my hiflier. Maybe I'll put it back in and see how it sounds.

You should really do Verse Chorus Verse, even thought it is from Nevermind, and you would probably have to get a different amp if I'm correct.
I Love you💛😍
figure out the intro of Unit friendly unit shifter
I don’t think Kurt used the neck pickup. You should try a Duncan in the bridge
But great video
Do te Heart Shaped Box solo tone plss
I'm on it, its a tough one!
title for music in outro pls..
Just a random riff/beat I came up with
You should have named the guitar Yankee Doodle since you said it was light (as a feather). 3:45
Is that a neck p90?
Yeah it's a stock P90 style pickup from univox
I love your videos, you shoud do I hate myself and i wanna die
While I don’t care for a lot of these tones you absolutely kill videos on matching the tone!
