Nirvana's In Utero clean tones are hands down my favorite guitar tones. I've spent to last 2 year years trying to figure it out, and with the help of Earnie Bailey (Kurt Cobain's former guitar tech) I was able to finally get it. Here's the story behind it. Special shoutout to @isaiahgamervw7306 for helping me find pics of Kurts sound tech 2x12 cabinet!

The clean guitar tones on Nirvana's In Utero are some of the best guitar tones I've ever heard. Those tones are the whole reason I picked up a guitar. The distorted tones of In Utero are great too, but it's the cleans that do it for me. This video is about that, hope ya dig it!

the amazon aluminum guitar

I've been spending a lot of time focusing on aluminum guitars lately to try to dial in the rest of the tone for Nirvana's In Utero. I started experimenting and ordered aluminum from amazon and pieced together a Frankenstein build. It sounds awesome! This was a fun one.

Man took matter into his own hands Sounds absolutely INCREDIBLE Awesome!!! Thank you!
I have a question, later on will you add a collection page on your website to show your progress through the months/years to finding that tone?
As a huge Nirvana fan I have to say these sound fantastic! I love playing along with Nirvana tracks, so to have a proper sounding IR is great!
Sounds amazing. I always wanted to be able to sound like Pennyroyal Tea or Sappy. So explain to me like I'm 5 how to do this. I'm a basement player with stomp boxes and a couple amps, and just heard about what an IR is when this video came out. I don't have or use any "interfaces" or recording software. I just want to plug in and sound like this sometimes. How do I do it? Can I download the pack into an IR pedal like the TC Electronics IR loader pack and use it like a stomp box into my amp? Because I can't get a straight answer online saying I can do that or not. Just tell me the easiest way to play and have fun with these sounds when I play my amp. Thanks!
For an IR to sound right you need what is called a FRFR (Full Range Flat Response) Speaker. E.g Studio monitors or some neutral headphones. A normal guitar speaker, and even more so a complete amp would color the tone strong enough that it will sound very different. If you want to use IRs with your existing Amp you would need an amp with a cabinet output, that you can connect to a load box that simulated the load of a speaker while only having a 1/4” line level connector. You can then use that line out to feed it into some IR loader and the result to some FRFR speakers. Note that this will typically get you the tone of a miced amp hearing it in the recording room console.
Ok, thanks. So a line out to a cab with FRFR speakers. No problem, I do a line out to a couple cabs already. What's a load box though, and why do I need it? Any recommendations for a cheap one?
@@aaronward3602 it depends on your amp. With normal tube amps if you don’t connect a real speaker which creates a „load“ against the amp, you might break your amp. If you’re using some kind of digital amp like Boss Katana there typically is an „Amp out“ that you can directly use
Thanks man. Reading more about this, maybe it doesn't make sense for me after all. I didn't know that the pedals are needed too - I'd be copying the speaker tone. I already have a 2x12 with 1973 Utah 16 ohm speakers and a vintage Sansamp. I'd be just be buying all this stuff to replace the cabinet tone I already have...I thought everything about the tone was there in the download.
Why not use the IR loader that came with softtubes?
So this works as a plugin in protools?
we need a weezer blue album IR pack
Imagine playing, Seether, Foo Fighters, Deftones, Breaking Benjamin all that with Kurt's rig! All this current music on old gear...
THIS is one of the many reasons I kept up on digital music production. I started playing in '96 at age 16 just because of Nirvana, this pack would be an INSTANT BUY!! I want to have Kurt's rig!!
Hes dead?? wtf!!, 😪Thats actually pretty fucked up to hear man😵
also can annyone tell me the difference between the standard ir, a clean one and a dist one? is it just for preferences ? i thought i need one IR made of one cab and its for all use cases of that specific cab since no matter wich of the IRs i use its anyway always clean if i dont use my distorion pedal
it's bc speakers react differently if you're using distortion or not, if he had not done the dist ir it wouldn't sound right
@@BrunaHera okay so we got a clean one and a dist one ... but what is the one that is just called the mic type?
Depreepy!
What settings are on the Ds1?
You did a great job Aaron! I bought the pack of course. Now ae are waiting for Nevermind pack! Dont be late man! 😅 I wanted to ask you if the settings of the pedals you are showing in the video are the the same at the time you play your guitar using the ir pack... Thanks again man, all the work you do is amazing ❤
Inspiring dude.
RIP Steave
Dude. This is unreal. I’m so stoked to see you finally put something like this out, and it sounds unreal. You’re such an inspiring creator!
Hey just a question, where’d you get the mark v gospel style pickups? Aside from like $300+ ones I can never find any replicas.
Surprised to learn that Kurt might’ve used a rat at the in utero sessions, unless I missed that in the Steve video. It sucks we’ll never get official confirmation on it.
you can never get 1:1, to my ears it is a matter of color/vibe
Great work! Have been playing around with the IR pack on my Fender Tone Master Pro with a Twin Reverb model, sounds great. I kicked on a Big Muff (real one, not the model in the Tone Master) and it sounds HUGE with the Distortion IRs
The “in utero ir pack” is something I think they used on my mother when I was born
How do I get this with boss studio
your website is flagged as unsafe on every browser my guy
damn you even had frank zappa make it for you
That guitar sounds great. What do you think about an aluminum neck on a guitar like that? Thinking about building something that hopefully has your guitars tone.
What is Pedal X?
insane

Hey Aaron thank you so much I’m realy Happy with the IR pack BUT it would be good if you would give us a text file with the IR pack where you can check what IR has been used on what songs and with which guitar would be easyer … (also for other songs you don’t mention in the video)
its been a long road. Congratulations. RIP Albini Love and support the channel
Planning on buying this! Thank you for your hard work and selling it at a fair price!
that HSB clean tone omfg
Hi Aaron, I understood you'll commercialize some variants of this guitar. Is there some news about this ? Thanks for you're work. Regards, Raphaël
1.)The fact that I was able to load these right into my L6 Helix and immediately go for it is priceless. 2.) I am getting tones out of my guitars that I didn’t even know were possible. 3.) Creating guitar tones which are deeply rooted in Kurt feel but can very much be your own and unique sounding Is the place I’m very happily occupying atm. Aaron, you did a phenomenal job bringing this to life. Let us not be Kurt clones as a result of this gift, but instead drop pieces of his sonic soul into all genres of music as if we were spreading his ashes around the world.. thanks to the journey of AR manifesting to IR. Aaron, not to be dramatic .. but this may be what you were put on this earth to do. This pack is lovely.
Well said!
Your wife is breathtakingly beautiful😊
I predict that the Veleno style guitar is the next rubber bridge studio craze in music
it has the polychorus to play radio friendly lol.. oh man crazy prices for this bum pedal lol
Can you load these irs into a tonex pedal??
I’m p sure any IR works on tone X. Someone else said they loaded it on their line 6 Helix pedal
Hello Aaron, wondering if the pack compatible whit boss ir200?
"look how awesome this looks in the sunlight😃" the sky: ☁☁🌪☁🌩☁
honestly really great videos aaron keep doing what you’re doing! please!
that is seriously cool. something funny i noticed is on the double tracked sansamp heart shaped chorus, youre bends were more in tune than kurts were. not better or worse either way, just funny.
Hi, can you load these IRS in the axe fx 3 directly without convert them ?
After hearing you say how much money you spent … I thought you should sit back snd enjoy the fruits! …. I'll just sit and grin The money will roll right in….
I’m a new to IR’s. Can someone help me? Do I need to use the IR’s with those effect pedals active to achieve the sound or would the IR alone do the job?
I get it’s the sounds of in utero though it’s stinks as a stand-alone tone. Still would buy it
I disagree sound wise this is one of the most quickly satisfying IR packs I bought for quite some time. Setup a vintage style cleanish amp model with this IRs and put a DS-1 or Sansamp before and you get this raw, dirty, noisy and bold tones. You don't have to setup arcane stuff.. just this and start playing. Of course - if Grunge, Stoner Rock or psychedelic blues rock isn't your taste and you're more into super fast shredding there certainly are IR packs for EVH fans ;)
@@aptfx thanks man, I’m going to have to give it a try. I’ve never used ir packs. I use Luna, should be easy. Cheers
Thank you for doing this and simultaneously scamming the IRS lol
Fuck yeah this is amazing!
this is so cool
