  • In tonight's episode of Machinedrum Mondays, we are checking out and reacting to Meshuggah's very own, Tomas Haake! This video comes courtesy of our friends over at Loadwire, as they compiled the video footage of Tomas' amazing drumming capabilities. I share my thoughts, insights, and analysis (to the best of my ability given Tomas' complex drumming) on this incredible , and legendary, musician. Tomas, you are truly unrivaled!

Curious how you mention that the vocalist is also in tuned with everyone. You are absolutely correct! In some of their live shows, Jens Kidman, the vocalist, can be seen tapping his finger on the mic _in time_ with the song! So not only is he tuned will with everyone, he is also counting as everyone else!
It ain't easy to pinpoint and line up their discog when it comes to Tomas Haake. Each song is very different from each other, and even more so when it comes to the drums! Nevertheless, I do have a couple of recommendations. Clockworks is widely considered as a great definition of what the band is and a great example what they can be, so if you want to see what Tomas Haake is capable of, that's the song. Nostrum is said to be the Bleed for hands; not much actions with the feet but your hands will be very busy.
Great video! Would love for you to react a few of their full songs in the future!

I'm a nerd Meshuggah fan. If you casually end up listening to Meshuggah just start from the beginning and go chronologically and enjoy the journey. Don't skip I or Catch 33. 😊 For content Nothing has great tracks to react or play through. Stengah, Straws Pulled At Random, Perpetual Black Second. At the time they released I was fascinated by Meshuggahs extended single tracks I and Catch 33. Those would be cool for reactions. Take care, be safe!

I've promised myself that I need to ask any member of Meshuggah why they never play it live if I ever ran into them; it is one of my absolute favorite Meshuggah songs. And what did I do when I ran into Tomas at a local bar in Stockhholm? Forgot all the fuck about it (it was the same day they released Immutable).

  • @S0ph1an
    @S0ph1an Před rokem +12

There's actually an article on these guys in The Journal of Music Theory that I read in grad school. The author coined the term "rhythmic dissonance" to describe Tomas' unique approach to layering polyrhythms (usually in the kick) over 4/4 (usually in the high hat and/or snare). The layering isn't new but what is new is that they will slightly alter the polyrhythm once every 20 measures so that the two meters never quite line back up and so that they don't produce a macrorhythm. I know in interviews they talk as if they free compose these patterns but the analysis seems to suggest that this is too consistent to be unintentional; which makes it genius! "Future Breed Machine" and "Rational Gaze" I think were two of the songs analyzed that demonstrate this best.

I've seen Meshuggah live a couple of times. Every time I'm equally amazed by their power and precision. Everyone in that band just f***ing delivers on stage. And everything is tight as F***. Even the lighting guy is doing his shit live and following the band's crazy polyrhythms.
Oh - and I've never seen them count in a song. There's no 1-2-3-4. They just go.
And like you noticed at 8.01 - the vocals fit the rhythm. That goes for all their songs. The vocals are not there to do a melody over the instrumentals - it's part of the rhythm.
Listen to their album obZen - It's awesome

    1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2 3 1

From what I can gather, it was the guitarist Fredrik Thordendal who came up with this as a sort of, bet you can't. But if you can, this could be epic sort of deal. Most didn't think it would work out as a song that would ever make it to an album. But alas, Tomas rolled with it, and after a LOT of practice, made it a thing. I've been pressed by other musician friends to do some stuff on guitar. Some I could do, and some that took me weeks to even be able to sort of pull what ever off even if sloppy. I have to give it to Tomas for putting the time into making this a thing. That had to have taken some long hours to even get close to this. Cudos to Tomas for this.

Their sound is like a chaos you can float peacefully on top of. A lot of that is from how approachable it is given how complex it is. You almost always have that hi hat ticking along steadily so you got something to rock (or headbang) along with. I believe this is true, that they pretty much write all their music as 4/4 with polyrhythm on top.
I also think that they write a lot of the songs remotely and even practice individually. Some tour had like no full band practice before it started.
Oh also Haake is two syllables Haa-ke

As far as I know, Tomas actually writes most of the lyrics. I saw in a studio video that he will whisper the lyrics onto a demo track and give them to the singer Jens to work out how to scream them. It makes a lot of sense that the vocals are so tuned into the rhythm. Then again, sometimes the guitarists write rhythm patterns on a computer for Tomas to learn/adapt into something playable. The whole band is just so in tune!

Cool video! we need more drummers who feel like we do that Meshuggah are just aliens!
I'm sure someone has mentioned this already, but there is an interview (I think its on the digipak version bonus DVD in the Koloss album) where Tomas had to spend 6 months learning how to play Bleed. They wrote it in a DAW with toontrack products and then he had to go back and learn not only the patterns but also the stamina to be able to play it all the way through!
Have you ever checked out Steve Shelton from Confessor? He's like the first drummer I became aware of that was doing impossible rhythmic things with Confessor back in 1991! the song "Condemned" from their first album is ultra-technical sounding, but he did a deconstruction video showing how he wrote the patterns for that song and its all in polyrhythm territory like moving the ride cymbal into 3s while playing bass and snare notes..... He's also got a cymbal choke technique that I havent seen a lot of other people use and he sounds like no-one else. Check him out!
