    "Originally, the song was called "Aneurysm". That's what it's about, an aneurysm in your head killing you, and how you're transformed from a living being into dying. It's written in a lot of metaphors."

      Yeah, this.
      Anthropomorphizing the symptoms of a disease and speaking of it as if it has agency and a will of its own is.. very metal hah.
      But obviously not something you immediately think of while analysing the lyrics of a song.

    Seeing people exposed to Meshuggah for the first time is so funny. They're never ready.
    Too bad this version with the video isn't the full song. This ends right before a nice melodic guitar solo that leads into an intense outro. I remember how overwhelming this band was before I started to understand their sound. Once you're used to it and can hear that they're playing these crazy, relentless, heavy songs in normal 4/4 time, it's strangely satisfying.

    Well done for tackling Meshuggah! They are a bit like Tool, their video’s don’t have a lot to do with the song, plus this is an MTV acceptable version, the original is much longer. The original title of this song was "Aneurysm", and indeed, it is about the experience of dying from a brain aneurysm.
    The painted white guy is a reference to the name of the album, "Obzen". Which is a sort of amalgam of the 'ob' from 'obsceity' and zen, so as to create a word that sorta means the opposite of Zen, and that man has achieved whatever 'Nirvana' state goes with this 'Obzen'.

    I believe the working title was Aneurysm. Thomas Haake, the drummer worked tirelessly on the polys that you hear on his double bass drum. Almost scrapped it, then just changed his technique to how he was physically playing it. Phenomenal work

    • @GodTierHuman
      @GodTierHuman Před 25 dny +1

      You are correct, it was titled Aneurysm. The polyrhythm tho, is played between the hands ("counted" 4/4) and the feet ("felt" 3/4). The pattern he plays on the double bass is called a herta.
      Thomas said in an Interview, it took him 6 months to learn just this song! The same time it took for the rest of the album. Dude’s a beast xD

  • @leonelsjanofwipper3418
    @leonelsjanofwipper3418 Před měsícem +5

    Great you're doing Meshuggah but it is a bit an acquired taste. And Bleed is in my opinion not the best place to start, unless you're a drummer and watch the live drum cam version.
    (same goes for Clockworks, I see it recommended but that's serious deep end Meshuggah)
    Better try 'Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Gave it Motion' which is quite a bit slower and has pretty straight forward lyrics (It's poetically describing the feeling of revenge)
    Another good one, more melodic, is 'Dancers to a Discordant System'.
    In the same way there is 'Straws Pulled at Random' which is a thunderstorm where the suns breaks through and it becomes a beautiful day after all.
    A beautiful instrumental from their last album is 'They Move Below'. Very hypnotic.
    But it's all extremely heavy, of course. Not much bands heavier than Meshuggah.

      The blackest jazz you'll ever hear is the album Blackjazz by Shining. The other, more Miles Davis post smack, option is The Feral Wisdom by Wormlust. Like a jazz band on acid being abducted and driven mad by a volcano demon and accidentally achieving black metal as a result.
      Dancers is a tune though.
      Actually, Sleepwalker and Fleurety also do the black jazz thing pretty damned well. Although Sleepwalker is a lot like like a black metal version of the Sumac improv albums.
