A-Class foiling catamaran - 23kn speeds in gusty 10-20kn winds - multicam

- Fantastic A-Class catamaran foiling day to do a training race on the virtual sailspeedmaster track. Due to this course and west-wind direction most foiling is reach and downwind course. First half is mostly downwind, second half of video mostly reach. And yes, I should have released the traveler a bit more on reach course.
Since the original chase cam built for paragliders would not fly on downwind course where apparent wind speed is low compared to upwind, I 3D printed a larger version of it which flys nicely also downwinds. makers can go here www.thingivers....
Windspeed and direction has been recorded with calypso ultrasonic anemometer and sailmon max. Metrics seem directionally OK, but there is still some info required from sailmon on how to tune it for my setup.
For video overlay i switched from RaceRender to Telemetry Overlay, which not only syncs times better, but also allows green-screen export what helped a ton with multi-cam editing.

I love the way this boat sounds cutting through the water. Excellent camera angles as well.
oh man what a great idea to place the camera that way!! and wonderful sailing! all the time boatspeed above tws, very nice.
Super video. Brilliant idea with a cam flying on a kite/parachute.
Great to see the wind data.Keep on publishing that motivational stuff!
Fantastic video! Very inspirational! May i ask the gopro mounts on your forestays?
Hi Albert, thanks for your note. As to gopro: I created a 3D printable mount. You can find it here www.thingiverse.com/thing:4607174. You can have up to 3 go-pro's hanging upside-down on this mount.
So cool!
And really cool flying camera...is that DIY? incredible perspective/POV -- can you share how you rigged that up?
I made the design available at www.thingiverse.com/thing:4982005 for 3D printing. The chase cam is tied to a bungee that comes down from the sailtop. It is tied there to the ring that hooks the sail into the mast-top. you can see it here czcams.com/video/fDrksMaWagE/video.html
@@flyinggorilla brilliant!
Where is this filmed? Is this a lake?
Looks beautiful! Nice sailing, by the way
thanks. It is Attersee a lake at the Alps in Austria
Looks amazing .. how long did it take you to learn to foil with such stability?
i started with whisper foiling catamaran sailing (as you can tell from my other videos in this channel) which has flight control through flaps and ride height sensing wands. that helped me learn the basics on how to get up on the foils and balance a bit. as i got the hang of it i wanted more. so I bought this foiling A-Cat 3 years ago, so basically i sailed it now for 3 seasons. I still need to learn and improve so much more, whats exciting as the challenge continues and it gets never boring (except when there is no foiling wind). 10kn stable winds are the best to start and learn, then you have quick first successes. it gets trickier when you need to balance the boat and at the same time go for maximum VMG both up and downwind and when winds are gusty. but most importantly for me - it is fun.
@@flyinggorilla there is a friend here with a Stunt S9 which is similar T foil system as whisper which I have sailed with few times,.. but I imagine it's more challenging with J foils on an A Cat
@@moarefk the newer A-Cats have Z-foils which are a bit better than J-foils, but you are right it is still much harder to balance than those moth-like T foils with flaps. But the key benefit is that you get better upwind performance with A-Cat and Z-foils vs. T-foils (except you fly it like a moth with a strong windward lean-over).
@@flyinggorilla I have been looking for any kind of tutorial on getting started on foiling and I can't find anything.. any chance you can make a video on the general concepts of how to foil for someone moving from classic cats to a foiling cat ?
@@moarefk this video is a bit outdated, but still talks about some basics for a-cat foiling czcams.com/video/vh6n0RSoOio/video.html
Quick question,... when you are flying on both foils and you hit a dead spot or sudden drop in wind, how do you control the boat from not capsizing over you if you are on trapeze when the wind pressure drops suddenly ? assuming its not easy to come back in quickly when the boat starts to heel towards you ...
Good question, and yes exactly, once the boat already heels windward it gets harder to get back into the boat. So number one is to manage pressure by luffing up and sheeting in. If there is still not enough pressure then you get better back off the wire before it is too late, or at least move body weight closer to the hull. Good sailors anticipate lulls properly and get back into the boat quickly enough. When I dont anticipate lack of pressure properly, then I hang on like here czcams.com/video/St3NzUP1wFI/video.html . This however can also mean "full-stop" czcams.com/video/BtuqO5geT3k/video.html of the boat and you better have one foot in the footstrap so to get body weight quickly towards the boat and not cause a windward capsize. Trapezing low enough helps too, because when the body is submerged in the water, it doesnt pull on the trapeze line as much. Trapezing high means capsize if you dont move your body quickly enough back on the boat. Not only lulls cause this problem, but also when sheeting in too much downwind course, then the sail can stall and apparent wind power is gone immediately. In that case, even with body touching or in water, luffing up is the only choice to get airflow going again and have enough power in the sail to not capsize but pick up speed again.
Hi there ,.. do you know what is the distance between your rudder and Z foils ? Or the distance between the tip of your hull and the center point of your Z foil cassette ? I'm trying to figure out best position to get optimal stability without looking easy turning ability on the boat
Transom to z-foil/daggerboard housing is approx 200cm, Tip to z-foil/daggerboard housing is approx 311cm, with tip-to-transom 549cm
@@flyinggorilla thanks a bunch :)
how do you get all the speed/ direction data? cheers, cool yacht bro nice sailing
thanks! i use a sailmon max gps device, that is coupled via bluetooth to an calypso ultrasonic anemometer. that data is being recorded and then overlayed to the video. you can see it in close-up here in this video: czcams.com/video/BtuqO5geT3k/video.html
@@flyinggorilla I do like the overlays, especially the wind arrow overlay. Which software did you use for that?
@@erikbrresen7533 I use Telemetry Overlay goprotelemetryextractor.com/telemetry-overlay-gps-video-sensors
And what is the name of the device that flies and shoots from behind
It is called a chase cam. www.thingiverse.com/thing:4982005 I designed and 3D printed my own as the original chasecam skybean.eu/ was designed for paragliding. I needed more air resistance to let the gopro fly also on downwind sailing course.
thanks
What design is this boat from dna
if you mean the visual design, then it is pretty much the original F1 design that they took over to the F1x. Because the boat is full carbon, this black one has transparent coating and colored anti-slip deck add-ons. By now they have additional colored versions with metallic looking hull colors, pretty cool.
@@flyinggorilla thanks for the comeback! I enjoy your videos
@@flyinggorilla trying to get one shipped to Hawai’i whats the cost for one of those
@@dr.peabody5032 as i am only DNA customer i dont feel i should reply. DNA F1x is definitly the technically more advanced configuration (with e.g. the mainsheet wheel under the tramp vs. full pulley system...) and that has its price. however i recommend to contact dnaperformancesailing.com/ directly for inquiries.
@@flyinggorilla thanks I had sent them an email awhile back, I’ll try again
