Now this is a mountain road (Grödner Joch/Passo Gardena) almost everyone who's been to Alto Adige before probably has used at least once already. It's part of a "main route" which connects a lot of touristic towns in the area. As with all mountain roads I've been on so far in my short bike-life this one was incredible fun to ride as well. Even with a greater number of other road users. There are people who don't travel to Italy in August because they say the roads are too busy. It's true that they are busier than in any other month probably. But in my opinion there's still more than enough space for having fun. I usually like encounters with other road users anyway because they can sometimes add a bit of excitement ;) What's your opinion? Would you consider this kind of traffic as "too much?"
---
general INFO: In August 2015 I rode my bruised Honda CB500 off into Italy. To follow my holy quest of real-world-meeting potentially awesome people whom I know through my Schaaf Social Media pages. The folks I've met were all brilliant by the way.
I obviously tried to capture some RAW videos for you guys while I was there. Unfortunately my bike was not at a 100%. The Little Honda was safe to ride but I simply couldn't afford to repair all the broken bits before I took off. So while riding I had to get used to the following issues:
-) Steering head bearing age-worn - causing slight issues while slow riding (will replace next season)
-) Front brake caliper age-worn - I only had about 50% of the bike's usual brake force at disposal (will replace next season)
-) Rear wheel bearing busted - causing the bike to unexpectedly keep its lean/riding direction while going through slower corners. While riding I thought all the steering issues came from the head bearing. After the trip I discovered the completely dissolved middle bearing of the rear wheel while disassembling the rear wheel in order to change the bike's chain. I had no idea my bike was constantly grinding up the bearing parts inside the back wheel while riding. I thought the metallic clanging noise came from the chain (got replaced immediately after the trip)
-) Stuck chain links - I replaced chain and sprockets after the trip
-) Broken chain guard / swing arm protection - the thick rubber piece to guide the chain over the bike's swing arm fell apart. Causing the chain to hit the metal swing arm. Which quickly sent the chain into Nirvana.
-) Adjusting screw for the clutch lever broke - Resulting in me not being able to adjust the clutch's friction point. I had to get used to a completely new friction/biting point which made exact rev-matching while down shifting a lot harder.
Luckily with time I got used to most of the issues and I could almost ride as fast as I wished to. At this point only some slow hairpin corners remained a problem. You can clearly see it in this video.

BACK IN PARADISE! Blue skies, grippy tarmac, majestic mountains! The Little Honda and myself are loving it!
+Schaaf love these RAW videos. You should do one where you ride the Alpine coaster in Mieders!
+Justin Ammerman In the 90s you had these "alpine coasters" which basically were like a small version of ice tracks just with concrete instead of ice. If you went too hard on these tracks you could fly off. Which made going fast a matter of skill. I loved these. With these modern versions you can't fall off the track. Where's the excitement? :)
Awesome content mate! Long may it continue! All hail Schaaf. . . . 😃
what are you doing mate, going through my archives ? ;)
@@Schaaf I'm cyber stalking! 🤣
Added to the list of roads I have to check ! awesome vid as usual Schaaf
+Jul In The Middle thanks Jul!! Definitely worthy for your list!
I am half a world away but I could still feel the change in that road surface! I think we have one section of road (that I've ridden) along an alpine road that changes like that; from old and bumpyish to new and smooth as. I cannot get enough of this alpine wonderland you live in / travel around mate, cannot wait for part 2
+Carmo Motovlog thanks a lot Carmo!
Paradies trifft es echt am besten! Sehr schönes Video wiedermal.
danke Herman!
as always, amazing scenery and riding !
thanks a lot!
another awsome ride,love it.
thanks a lot!!
that stunning view , its a must ride road ... one day... i will ride there
+Gabsy5 doooo iiiiit!!
That scenery is absolutely beautiful. I am so jealous of where you live
i know! wish I could live there myself :/
I gotta apologize man. Watching a video of yours on a phone feels like a crime. I just wanted to see it asap. Awsum video as usual
:D :D Apologies accepted :D
Late, as usual, but damn better than never.
Awesome video, always an enjoyable experience.
+aserta true that :D Thanks a lot aserta!
Hey dude, great sound from bike, where do you put zoom recorder?
What's the scraping sound in left handlers?
+scotfaze171060 my footpeg! Find the link to my sound recording tutorial in the description!
This old kind of videos is the best
thanks for watching!
schaaf, I bought this cbf500 2007 two years ago, there was a problem between 5000-6000 rpm. that means scratchable feeling. do you have it also?
I never noticed something like this with my PC26, sorry!
Amazing video! Love it! :D
+Sjoerdskoo thank you very much!
You're lucky to live near such epic riding areas. Where I live sometimes you have to ride for an hour just to reach the next corner and then there's usually a stop sign lol.
the road you see in this video is about 600kms away from my home ;)
"Click to skip the slow bit" - it's not going to happen! I'm enjoying every second!
even I skip the slow bits :D thanks a lot though!!!
that bike sounds lovely
indeed
You are very blessed Schaaf!
We will be setting off to see your beautiful country on 7thMay2017. Hopefully see you on the road!
this is not my country though ;)
That view!!!! Amazing
+Swiss Biker yes!!!
Amazing video and stunning scenery buddy. I am from the UK and love my cb500 😍😍. What exhaust have you got on her and is it without the db killer. If so how does she run ? 👍👍
Leo Vince! Thanks!
wow man what a beatifull place and day to ride
+22rember true that!
Gardena is a great pass, I have been there two years ago. Great ride as always ;)
+Bur Ozt thank you! Glad you already know how awesome this road is :)
Hey Schaaf,gr8 riding,gr8 tips and videos! Quick question:why do you keep your pass in tankbag?i was also wondering if you tried duke 390 and if yes-how it compares for you to old trusty CB? Greets from München!
I put the pass there just for fun actually :) No, unfortunately I haven't tried that Duke yet.
Awesome! watched it again immediatly :)
+A.C. coooool!! Thanks :D
Nice road to ride and a wonderful backdrop. Again i find myself thinking i'm not bothered if it's not an ultra fast road to ride but even with the bike problems you make it look smooth and calm with a capital SMOO and a capital CAL. I love your interpretation of roads as "grippy" as you dodge the potholes and slippery tar strips to make it look seamless.I take my hat off to you and your riding style. Ride Safe and keep it shiny side up.
thanks Jeremy :) the riding mode I'm entering whenever I'm in uncharted territory is my favourite too. Quick but not too insane. Simply feels appropriate :)
Thanks for another great video. Didn't know that cb500 has cruise control 1:15 .
+megaidiot hahaha :D My experienced wrist is my kind of cruise control :D
Cool video! :) This little traffic isn't a problem at all, as the road is wide enough for passing the other road users safely. As you said, it even adds a bit of excitement. It would have been much more annoying if you got stuck behind a car during a series of curves... Looking forward the part 2!
+MrKiddo haha yes I guess I was lucky with WHERE and WHEN those cars appeared :D Merci Kiddo!
Beautiful road!
+sonusamator indeed!
Dem long scrapes at around 6:25 and 7:05 were SOOOOOOOOOOOOO satisfactory.......*insert fitting meme here* :D
+Gázser Márk :D :D
Not sure what I liked more. The riding or the scenery. Alto looks beautiful.
+CLUTCH1ST thanks :D
Schaaf, your videos are showing me a thousand places I'd like to ride, but it will take me a couple of years to retrace some of your steps! I'll be on a scooter, moving slower, but I've got to try to do as many of these roads as I can. Each of your videos leads me to add another destination to my Bucket List! I appreciate them all! Thanks for doing the work required to share it all. Truly stunning landscapes that I wouldn't so easily discover without your helpful work. May I make a selfish request? Be careful out there! If you are running as fast as these videos suggest, then I'm afraid you won't be around long enough to show us all of the good roads between Austria/Slovenia/Italy. I'm based in Slovenia. I've done a few of the passes, and I know all too well about the road hazards that are unpredictable. Rock slides around bends, twists with patchy pavement, etc. Give yourself time to react to the unexpected, please. I know you are skilled, but you can't predict everything while moving on ridges so high at the pace you appear to set for yourself. Stay Alive to document more of the beauty you see. It would be considered a worthy Public Service. I'm also learning from observing your considerable skills. So, thanks for that as well!
thanks a lot man. Especially for your request. Unfortunately it happened and I had a life changing accident three weeks ago
You are writing, so I'm guessing you are ok? I hope whatever happened didn't cost you or your bike too much pain!
do you ever get ear popping from the altitude on these mountain rides?
rather often, yea
I don't understand - I've tried to ride my CB500 revving it to the level you do most of the time, she sounds like a nightmare on steroids when close to the red zone and scares the shit out of me. Your bike sounds just throaty and one can still say it's a parallel twin. Why is that?
That was awesome !
thanks Christoph!
niceee schaaf! love that road. We were there in september :) and even on the Daytona you can feel the lack of power higher at the mountains...
+Ranic you can even feel it on a 1000 RR BMW - but ~180bhp instead of 200 make no big difference on a public road ;) On a bike that weak it's a bit more annoying, trust me ;)
+Schaaf True that! I believe you!
+Ranic good thing you'll let me get my very own impression of how much the Daytona is lacking power in the mountains when we finally ride together, right? :D
+Schaaf hahaha, not many people (even friends) are allowed to ride my Daytona :P But, there is a change you can ride my Daytona :P Normally i don't say things like this :P
+Ranic doing bike-swaps with me is the only chance to ride the most famous CB500 on CZcams :D
maaaaan, you can ride. please don´t push tooo hard to prove it to anyone, so we can have more (longer) fun with you watching it. you will probably be my source of video impressions during snowy winter period to come. :-)
PS. love the audio as well :-)
The fun section begins where the balloons are :D
ahahahaha very clever observation :D
Nice road. I wouldn't say it was too much traffic. Why the long delay between the filming and uploading of these video, if I might ask?
you might! No motivation to edit these clips during the riding season and not enough time to do it throughout the last weeks
Beautifull...
+PontonRides yup!
Great views
+Earl Tash thanks Earl!
+Schaaf Thanks 4 bringing us along....
+Earl Tash you're welcome ;)
Hast du dem Varahannes scho mal a Video von dir gezeigt, ich glaub der würd dir bezüglich Linienwahl was husten. xD
What about swiss alps? ;)
Personally i try to ride in places that are away from cars because you never know what they are going to do haha, not to say i don't do it i would just prefer not to.
Great video as always btw man :)
that's true! I normally head for rather deserted routes too. but some busy roads are simply too good to leave it to the cagers ;)
Schaaf You are not wrong at all :)
What about police/ speed cameras?
there is no one mountain landscape more beautiful than the dolomites!
Schöne Gegend!! :) und dann noch so ein Asphalt :D
+Quick Shift richtig!!
+Bavarian Biker danke dir!!
Are you still doing this strip? When can you bing a diffrent video ALL of them are the same...
+SMManuel [Professional Editor] [Gamer] They are called RAW Onboard videos. How should they be different besides showing my riding without any editing, without color correction? They are called RAW Onboard for a reason. But if you have suggestions I'm always listening :)
Ok I like them but was just wondering if u could do bike v
logs?
+SMManuel [Professional Editor] [Gamer] oh I see. I will record occasional vlog videos when I need to explain stuff. But I don't do them for fun. I don't enjoy recording vlogs. Normally I'm also doing music edits on this channel here but I'm still way too busy for starting to work on big and creative edits these days unfortunately.
ok
same road maxwrist rides, maybe you saw him?
+Rides a Ninja link to the video please I think you're mistaking this road for another one
recht hast :D
thanks a lot :) You Polish people have great taste when it comes to motorcycles :D
+Schaaf i think not only then :D
+Adam Paradowski tehehehe :D
We won't be crossing those solid lines when you visit Switzerland. They're sacred here (just like the cows) :p
+The Swiss Motard now you know why I don't like la Suisse on two wheels ;) In my opinion a solid line with perfect visibility to the front and no possible hazards is useless - not sacred ;)
+Schaaf In the UK you don't cross the white line because you can bet a policeman will just happen to be there see you and ticket you!!
Schaaf You just have to say some things publicly ;)
Schaaf I agree with you and some straight safe roads here have a 40mph (60kph) speed limit and double white lines. Crazy but you just can't risk crossing in case they see you and ticket or even ban you.I want to keep my licence!!
ahahahahahahahahahahahaha
My favorite spot is the Würzjoch or Passo delle Erbe
I am from Brixen , so I have the amazing opportunity to go there every day :D
+Pyro Freak I'm not 100% sure but I think I filmed on Passo delle Erbe as well. It's the narrow one leading down to Brixen, right? With that one looooong straight with fantastic mountain views to one side?

Liebe Grüße euch allen, bleibt gesund in Coronazeiten, and Ride Save.
the mountains look kinda fake:D love it :)
+fittbunke that's SuperView mode! I love the effect :D
Unreal. Bob Ross must have painted these mountains.
ahahahaha true that :D
+SikraLP Tell me about it!
What about swiss alps? ;) eheh
+Joao Lourenco too expensive :D
above 60kph in first gear :O and i never saw u reach 6th gear(i guess) :P btw nice video :D
+Maninder Sokhi 6th gear on CB500 is overdrive. Only makes sense on motorways or boring main roads without corners.
+Schaaf just finished watching the second part too and yeah there are no boring straight roads so we haven't witnessed the speed in 6th gear and the animals on the speedo too :P
+Maninder Sokhi :D
Why is Holland so flat!!! I love that scenery, nice roads!
+Couper I can only repeat myself. Holland has its very own advantages :D
+Schaaf It sure has, but I'd love to have some of those roads in the vicinity
I can't read that fast, can you keep the words up for longer?
+Bat Cat believe it or not you are the first person in two years to complain about that. My other viewers probably know there's a pause button on CZcams ;) I use it myself if captions in videos are too fast for my taste.
..or just watch it twice and read the comments the second time.. XD (I've done it at least once...ok maybe two..)
+RiderNag also a good idea :D
I got more than a semi just watching it
ehehehehe thanks Joel
haha im down with that skip the slow part button.
+WhoGotSoulHere :)
RIP Rastennippl' - you wont be missed
schön gesagt :D
to be honest... what traffic??? :P
hahaha yea, my time in Vietnam changed my understanding of traffic a bit as well ;)
Schaaf
yep, not that you needed it but it does sharpen your senses and i feel a lot of people should ride or drive in asia at least once and then we can have a chat ;)
+sjbali it's a fantastic traffic survival school. But taking my Asian riding habits with me to ultraconservative Austria was not the smartest move :D
Schaaf
yep thats the problem, ride safe buddy! ( oh wait it's winter for you ;) )
120 in a 60 zone - you were lucky the police wasn´t around :P
I modified my speedometer
Dank dir!!!
Sky line at the 7:11 ..... vau....
+Andrej Bozho thanks to your comment I just noticed the fat Merc on the left side at 7:15 :D
5:57min 30km/h... Was tust du?
;-o)
Nice nice baby ♫
+Mike xxXxx (UnlikeMike) :D :D thanks
