If you’re feeling intimidated or hesitant to start, here’s my story - I’m 51, haven’t worked out in years, and just started boxing. Found a local gym, it was totally out of my comfort zone, like by a LOT, but I forced myself to go. It’s a half hour walk away, and I’ve been twice, third time tonight, and I still have to force myself, but I’m doing it. I’m completely crap, but no one there cares. Plus it's 2 hours of total brutality on the body. All ages and abilities mixed together but I'm the oldest one there by far. Basic message: if I can do it, you can!

Back when I was growing up in tge 60's and 70's boxing in the inner cities was a religion. Boxers were more important than politicians. Joe Louis united a nation of people more than martin luther king. Check out joe lewis and the german ssuperhero max schmelling. Boxing was everywhere. Even high schools and colleges had boxing programs. And radio stations had boxing teams. Gyms were everywhere. So if you were athletic in any way an old boxer or coach or cop will invite you to the gym. And then you become a part of the boxing clubs. Like fraternaties where old fighters get together and drink and eat and play checkers and talk boxing. I know joe louis because I am from detroit and hung out in his boxing club called Brewster Old Timers. The guy Ali feared the most was also a Brewster boxer named Al blue Lewis. Unlike today's boxers. The boxers of my day represented their family and community. And that's why you could see boxing champs walking around the neighborgood. Hanging out in their backyards and other normal things. So if you were a snotty nose violent kid like me even the family preacher would drag you to the nearest gym. For baptism. In a pair of 16boz gloves. Ahhh...the good ol days Coach.
