Do you know slavery is still legal in Mali?. He was likely not paying with gold but with salt, Mali has gold and salt mines. And I asume the reason why he was giving away so much "geld" (in german gold and money are the same word (EDIT:turns out it is not the same word)) was to cause inflation so when the subsequent deflation came people would sell/get rid of their workers and slaves, which is a normal thing during deflation, so Mansa Musa would buy them and sell them in other place for a higher value. Amazon pretty much does the same strategy with their low prices establishing monopolies.

It's all capitalized because the first letter of each word spells out "milliravi" which was a term Bezos once used as a clap-back to people saying Amazon would go bankrupt back in 2003. He said it meant a miscalculation of a million dollars or more, and also titled Amazon's next quarterly report "Meaningful Innovation Leads, Launches, Inspires Relentless Amazon Visitor Improvements" to make it an acronym.
