He's the son on a remarkably innovative doctor and grew up exposed to far more culture than almost any other kid, he's always been interesting and original.
Cocaine is a hell of a drug, and Dave it’s ok to come out of the closet, it’s 2023… Anyways, always liked to guy, my first gig was the Skyscraper tour, I was 11- years old, and it completely changed my life!
i absolutely LOVE this man. i love his music, his voice, but his PERSONALITY. he is the most charismatic and entertaining person i know. life is miserable and yet here he manages to provide me with such joy and i owe him a lot for that. thank you david
Van Halen (Before Hagar) has, and always will be my all time favorite band. I sided with Dave after he left and loved his solo career when others didn't. In fact, I was just listening to 'Sensible Shoes' and 'Hina' just this morning. Growing up in the 80's was awesome.
Dave is simply happy. He is energetic by nature. With his martial arts lifestyle he must be disciplined. He personifies charisma. He is positive, intelligent, quick witted, & good looking. Too bad most of the world just doesn't' get it. The media sells and looks for negativity or simply just drums it up from nothing. Dave's voice is one of a kind. He is/was a "showman/talented entertainer." Fans came not just to hear the band but to see Dave's performance! There will never be a group like the original 4!
A lot of Van Halen fans went to a VH concert to figure out how the hell EVH did what he did on guitar. In hindsight, you would get entertained by DLR since he gave the band energy and an image. He is pure fun, tongue in cheek all the time, his voice is one of a kind but he was never considered a "singer". I love the guy always have and always will have him as one of my musical influences.
Didn’t know he was hyperactive until I saw some interviews recently after Eddy passed away. This explains a lot of things: creativity, energy, but also the difficulty in relationships as this is exhausting. He became the artistic director (band/brandname, lyrics, stage and videos visuals, song themes, music production, song structure...) of the band. This was really needed to express the talent of EVH who is more of a shy character. This way of working became even more obvious when Samy joined the band as it affected so much the musical and artistic direction.
CLASSIC Dave, not necessarily High or Drunk or anything. Dave has ALWAYS been animated to the MAX (in 80's fashion). Dave has ONLY slowed down in the last 5 years or so, but he still talks a mile a second. This is the Dave we love!
Love Dave interviews... You will never ever ever get a one word answer from him. Ask him his name and he'll start talking and talking and talking. He is sooooooo hilarious.
David Lee Roth in my opinion is the greatest frontman ever. There are two members of the original Van Halen that changed the world back in 1978 when they released Van Halen 1. Eddie Van Halen changed the world with his guitar playing, and David Lee Roth changed the world on how a frontman would be. The original Van Halen band was magic. In my opinion their albums Van Halen 1, Van Halen 2, Women And Children First, Fair Warning, Diver Down, and 1984 are MASTERPIECES. I have never been a Van Hagar fan aside from only liking two songs Dreams and Humans Being.
How come so many black dudes dig old school Van Halen? I grew up in a mixed neighborhood in Detroit in the 80's and I was always amazed at how many black guys were blasting Roth-era Van Halen on their boom boxes in those days.
YES! Roth said in an interview that writing a song took a few minutes. It was the YEARS of movies, books and experiences to draw from that took time. So, yes there is some Rodney Dangerfield inspired one-liner moments.
Actually, most people have the opinion that David Lee Roth is the most entertaining and legendary rock frontmen of all time ---- this is validated by numerous music journals and critics ---- and Van Halen has wildly successful tours when Dave is the singer
"I always give three answers to my interviewers. The first one is: Okay, you're asking me this--but I'm gonna talk 'bout whatever the fuck I want. The second answer is: Before I answer that question let me say this, then I'll talk about whatever the fuck I want. And the third one is: Oh, I see what you're asking...but I'm gonna talk 'bout whatever the fuck I want. It's like 'open forum with Dave."
“ they used to say I was hyper now they say I’m self motivated.” Yeah!!!! He spoke in another interview where his parents sent him to see a psychiatrist at a young age and they just told him he’s hyper and they sent him to some kind of horse ranch, just trying to get him to calm down and the psychiatrist wanted to put him on Ritalin. MANY kids with ADHD are very creative and he just took every ounce of what he had with ADHD and lived his best life. He’s constantly learning constantly doing stuff if he listen to his interviews. One thing I read also is a lot of the time kids with ADHD have an above average IQ if you listen to this guy, speak and everything he’s accomplished, and I’m not talking about him being a rockstar. He is very versed in martial arts and many things he must be extremely smart.
Hey, I get what you mean. Van Halen shaped my life, with DLR then without him, but definitely with him. Can't take that away from him, but as awesome as his songs were and as cool as his lyrics were, I can't imagine personally being able to take him for very long without needing to "come up for air." I don't see it being a conversation so much as him performing a conversation while I listen. I could do it, for a while. I'm an Ed fan first, but I just KNOW he'd be hard to talk to because he's shy
I actually think DLR is the inspiration for Henry Rollins' energetic onstage talks. VERY much like this Dave banter - stream-of-consciousness sounding stuff that is worked out ahead of time.
Dave says: "They used to call me hyperactive" (thinking; "and now I´m on cocaine on top of that"); and continues saying: "now they call me self-motivated" (thinking; "rather, speed-motivated..."):)
I actually likened his yammer to a smooth but fast rolling river. What comes out of this man's mouth just flows. I could listen to him for hours. One of a kind.
always love Dave, but if you watch his interviews just 10 years earlier in 84, he was so much more mellow. here he has that smile that has not left his face for 20 years any fidgets like he has tourettes and on crack how did that happen
It's simply what happens to coke heads. Even after they stop using, they are fidgety and can't seem to sit still. Dave freely admits to his drug use. He is one of those rockstars who never went to "rehab" and was never demonized by the public as an "addict." He just seemed to float on through. Was he high on coke here, or was it the result of previous overuse? Who the hell knows? Only Dave, and he'd never get in the way of a good rumour!
Hard to believe just a few years before this interview, Dave looked much, much younger. Today, (March 2019), he looks so old, he isn't even recognizable anymore, compared to let's say, around 1985/1986. So sad. Drugs and alcohol did him in fast. At least he's still alive, though.
gotta love Dave's spirit. I don't know how VH dealt with polar opposites in the original lead man Dave and his replacement Sammy. Must have been a much different tour bus depending on who was on board. Big VH fan since the 70's!
He's always funny and upbeat. He's also a lot more intelligent than what people give him credit for.
Yeah people who don’t pay attention to him don’t understand his level of intelligence
He's the son on a remarkably innovative doctor and grew up exposed to far more culture than almost any other kid, he's always been interesting and original.
Stewart was speechless with Dave running the interview.
David Lee Roth is hilarious 🤣 he’s extremely honest and doesn’t care what anyone thinks or says about him.
I love David Lee Roth as is!!!
@@326cher absolutely Dave is Dave

this is DLR as an adult, could you imagine what he was like as a child ? LOL
"... Geraldo Rivera is news. Hillary is a politician...." Still true today, David.
Terry Kilgore killed it on that album

The man is always happy and smiling!
Whoa, at 1:27 he writes the title for one of the songs that he'd record with Van Halen 17 years later!

Bill Belzek Why does it matter? Blacks like Muddy waters and Chuck Berry created rock anyway.
Bill Belzek because old school Van Halen rules, that's why
George Mitchell Chuck Berry is death, unfortunately
He lives for danger and good conversation/He's an action figure, not claymation...
