Curtis Mayfield was a musical genius. He wrote, he produced, he played guitar and piano and he sang. You guys need to do more of him, including his work with the Impressions
Curtis Mayfield wrote the song People Get Ready one of the coolest spiritual songs in the world
Wow, didn't know that. The Jeff Beck-Rod Steward cover has been doing the rounds ever since Beck passed away last month.
@@vinniemoran7362 that is a great one too
@@vinniemoran7362I know and I always comment Curtis wrote the original. 😃
And the song Move On Up! Love that one!
“Freddie’s Dead” is my favorite…
Love Curtis Mayfield. The epitome of cool.
Straight up! As cool as it gets 😎
I am always amazed that these young people haven’t heard of super fly, it was huge. We loved it back then.
I'm a 70-year-old white woman and I was, have been, and always will be about the FUNK!! 😍
Same here!
@@324cmac And we're still rocking 😘
@@susanryan2451 Yup! Check out guitarist, Gary Clark Jr. He's funky and bluesy. So talented!
@@324cmac Much love from the old cranky retired folks out here in Southern California, and I'll definitely check him out😘😍
Mayfield was tremendous. “Move On Up” is also a great tune.
Agreed though extended version!!
Yes!
I'm a 62 year-old white man and I got this album from my best friend who happened to be black and it changed my fucking life!
The whole album is legit...and possibly the greatest soundtrack ever made!!!
One of the BADDEST arrangements in music history! Top 10 best intros of all time🔥🔥🔥Musical storytelling at it’s finest!!!
This tune helped define that early '70s Black Power "Right On" era. Brings me back to my youth.
Yes Curtis, Sly Stone & Janes Brown all represent that movement and era. Would you agree? 3 geniuses that need more representatio on reaction channel and that the 502 would totally dig.
" I'm Happy" Pharrell Williams!
He's a huge huge Curtis fan.
That song has Curtis written all over it.
Both MUST HEAR Classics,, Curtis Mayfield "Move On Up" & "So In Love"...R.I.P. Curtis🙏❤️
“Gimme Your Love”🔥🔥🔥
Killer song and movie. Curtis was an incredible artist.
As others have mentioned here, you must hear Isaac Hayes "Theme from Shaft" which came out about the same time as this one and got an Oscar for Best Song. Such a groove - also, Curtis doing "Freddie's Dead". Another amazing one is Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues'.
For blue-eyed soul, the Scottish band Average White Band with "Cut the Cake" also from the 70s.
It has to be the live version of Cut the Cake from the Person to Person live album from AWB. Great live recording. It is slower and funkier than the studio version. That version is too fast and short so they could play it on the radio.
Marvin Gaye's 'Inner City Blues',The Temptations 'Ball of Confusion ' or any Motown would be tremendous.
@@WilliamTheMovieFan Booker T and the MGs too, Green Onions.
Ray Charles, "What'd I Say"
70's music....💥💥💥💥💥God DAAAMN
i love watching these kids listening to the greatest era of music
Guys, those of us who were teens in the late sixties and seventies can tell you, there’s never been such an era of imaginative eye opening music for one’s formative yrs than this. Before Rap and Hip Hop there was the great Curtis Mayfield, writing about the very real observation of life on the streets in the America of the early 70’s. He’s always been “the shit,” and always will be. Checkout his contemporaries and their songs of the human condition, such as Marvin Gaye, “What’s Going On,” Stevie Wonder, “Just Enough For The City,” War, “Drink That Wine” and “The Lowrider.” That’s the flavor of 70’s music that spoke to a generation who saw the unvarnished realities of life during war and domestic hardships. All of it was very popular crossover music because it was truth rapped up in great music. Regards 🤘😎
So happy to hear someone react to Curtis Mayfield, finally!
I think Curtis's voice was just really light. His speaking voice was light, but the man was a genius.
I went to see the movie when it first hit in 1972... It was packed! I was 13 years old and had to be accompanied by an adult! When the movie was over, people had a different flow about themselves, especially the men! This movie stuck with you. I remember this like it was yesterday. Great song great movie. Awesome! RIP Curtis Mayfield and Ron O'Neal as Superfly!💯💯👍
I love that movie💜
How cool is Curtis Mayfield? Man he's so groovy with his funk!
Great cut. Akin and parallel to Isaac Hayes 'Shaft', essential to check that out. 'Move On Up' and 'If There's a Hell Below (we're all gonna go.)' are also great. (NB. Nick is gorgeous.) x
I believe that bending drum is a Roto Tom that leads into the bongos. You would turn the drum head to tighten or loosen it. Roto Toms were big back in the day. SUPER sound. Try Pusherman next.
Good call.
Almost all of Curtis' songs are about Junkies, Dope, and prostitution. Not to glorify that life, but because he was an addict for many years, and was part of it. He became a Born again Christian, and a man of God, who had a heart for those people. Love Curtis and his music. Jimi Hendrix used to play with Curtis, and you can here it in some of Jimi's music, and guitar style. A wonderful man, and a great influential artist from the 60s and 70s.
Thanks guys.
Major Props to the 502!
Been suggesting Superfly for a year all over and you guys are the first to make it happen. You forever have my respect 🙏 and support ❤️
For a follow up of something similar ( sane time period equally influential.
Sly and Family Stone- Thank You For Talking To Me Africa ( 71) 🔥
Basist Larry Graham literally invented the slap bass.
This is equally as 🔥 as Superfly
Great song. You lucky dog.
@@brucemarshall9521 It's not just about me. It's about exposing legendary black srtsts that are griossley overlooked on these channels.
@@jgsrhythm100
How about those Isley Bros. ?
The Floaters...Chi-Lites...so many others. Have yourself a good week. 🤘
I was going to go find a comment of yours somewhere and tell you to get over here and see this. We've been waiting.
@@Manageode Woohoo!
Damn, THAT BASS line is off the charts. I don't know how the bass player didn't miss a step in this. Wow! It's too damn good.
I had this oversized poster! "Stick it to the Man"...gave it to a wonderful friend in Chicago!
Miss you Smoky💓
If you haven't heard or tried it already, try Eddie Kendricks' "keep on truckin'". Kinda the same feel, and you're liable to recognize bits of it. I think it's been sampled for a few rap songs, and if you've seen the movie "barbershop", they do a few seconds of it behind a scene.
This song was also playing in The Notorious B.I.G. "Intro" where a baby was born in the beginning of the intro for Ready To Die (1994) album.
Curtis Mayfield was a Genius ....Remember this soundtrack from the movie -"SUPERFLY" WAS A STORY OF THE "TIMES" - THE GHETTO '70'S ......ONE OF MY TOP TEN FAV ALBUMS - I'M 75 ......
A #1 hit from the movie soundtrack. Called Superfly! His other hit from the movie is called Freddie's Dead.
Classic funk!!! The legendary Curtis Mayfield!!! RIP....
I was a kid when this first came out. It got a lot of radio airplay and was a huge hit. It sounded great then, and it still sounds great today. Good choice.
" I'm Happy" Pharrell Williams!
He's a huge huge Curtis fan.
That song has Curtis written all over it.
He sang like Smokey.
You literally could do a WHOLE month of Curtis Mayfield CLASSICS.. Don't short yourself..he is a Mad Genius.....
Curtis played a mean guitare and liked the 'wah-wah' pedal to give you that sound.... You just described the soundtrack of 'Shaft'.
Just subscribed! "this just oozes coolness!!" I'm gonna be remembering this line!! I bought this in my jr. hi days and it still resonates with me!
Production is absolutely crazy on this LP…rip #curtismayfield…#realmusicians, #realmusic
I haven't heard this song in years. Great reaction guys.
I needed this. No one was turning up in my feed that got me excited. Then I saw Curtis!
" I'm Happy" Pharrell Williams!
He's a huge huge Curtis fan.
That song has Curtis written all over it.
Freddie's dead - is straight up the best song off the superfly album!
My fav song on that album❤️💙
Such a great song and movie. Love Curtis Mayfield. This entire album is one of the best. So chill yet powerful with it's message. Thanks so much guys for reacting to this one. 🧡
The Impressions are a treasure! Shout out from Jeffersonville!
I used to play this in the 70’s in my collection of vinyls, lovely to visit again 🙏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🇬🇧💙x
Move on Up is a must listen, especially part 2 if you love sax. We People Who Are Darker Than Blue is also a classic Curtis song. A lot of these blaxploitation movies had great soundtracks, Across 110th Street - Bobby Womack is probably the best.
Willie hutch the mack
This song has jazz, funk, soul/R&B 🔥🔥, R.I.P. Curtis
Thanks for this, PLEASE do more Curtis Mayfield .
The Superfly sound track is top notch! One of the best movie soundtracks from the 70's.
Across 110th Street is the next place to visit IMHO - Bobby Womack has the vocals you're missing, Ty
A great movie soundtrack! Certainly one of the best of the 70's. Curtis Mayfield mad a masterpiece with this! The song Freddie's Dead has a message that hits hard.
Hey, you guys should listen to an amazing Scottish funk band called the Average White Band, or AWB. Their biggest hit was the instrumental song Pick up the Pieces, but they had lots of other hit songs. Listen to these:
Cut the Cake and Cloudy(Hamish, pronounced Hey-mish, can hit some high notes in this song!) from their Person to Person live album. These are so different and much better than their studio versions.
Studio versions of these:
School Boy Crush has such a fat bass you will gain 10 pounds!
Let’s Go ‘Round Again
Work to Do, a great Isley Brother’s song.
The Jugglers, it is so funky!
@@WilliamTheMovieFanI love AWB but Everyone does them but don't give legendary Black artsts like Curtis the time of day
Next Sly & Family Stone- Thank You (70) 🔥
@@jgsrhythm100 I’ve seen only a few people react to AWB, and it’s usually just Pick up the Pieces. I haven’t seen anyone react to the live, and best version of Cut the Cake or Cloudy. I grew up on AWB and they are often overlooked.
@@jgsrhythm100 have you heard of the movie called The Groove Tube? If not, look up the Groove Tube intro on CZcams. They use Mayfield’s song, Move on Up and it is a funny sketch!
@@WilliamTheMovieFan Wow I saw that so so Long ago when I was so young. Never would have recalled had you not brought it up. Will check it!!!
Curtis Mayfield - "Do-Do-Wap Is Strong In Here" ⚡⚡🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 🤘🤘
Love you guys!
Shout out to tha 502
What this shows is some of the most 🔥 and brilliant music was simply not on the radar of most due to how segregated music was. Curtis Mayfiekd , Sly Stone,& James Brown. 3 geniuses that deserve more representation on reaction channels
This tune, and numerous others like it, were all over the AM Pop radio charts back then. They were not segregated. The '70s played EVERY kind of genre on easily accessible Pop radio stations. My parents and even my grandparents heard this kind of music.
@@jgsrhythm100 Where did you grow up? I'm 61, grew up in South Jersey, and Super Fly song was everywhere! Not to mention other tunes like it. People my age all know the groups you mentioned very well. Soul, Funk, & Disco were huge in the '70s for all races, ethnicities, etc.
You'll hear crickets if the CZcams audience for these guys is mainly Classic Rockers. So it's a genre thing.....not a black artist vs white artist thing. Again, where did you grow up back then?
@@mowerdan8133 When did FM kick iin ? Maybe that's when it stopped.
I feel like once Rock radio hit in a big way that waa the end of what you refer to. So perhaps that type of diversity died by the mid to late 70's.
Certainly in the last 40 years there waa no outlet to hear it. Motown and others get played on oldie stations but not this.
This would have been around in the early 70's where I would have been to young( I sm 57) but I certainly later heard other music from that era. Never this.
@@jgsrhythm100 AM music radio officially died in early '80s. But there was an overlap period from about '72 to '82 when you had options to hear specific FM formats along with AM. So AM radio was still kicking it in mid to late '70s! Even some FM stations had Top 40 formats with multiple genres, which essentially replaced the former AM Pop stations.
Looks like you may have just missed the AM craze based on your age. But MTV & Top 40 FM stations were still playing multi-genre/multi-racial music.
@@jgsrhythm100 Not sure. I think vloggers play it safe and mainly focus on Classic Rock. The '70s tunes still get alot of viewers on just regular song videos, just not the vloggers.
Plus, radio stations today focus waaay too much on '80s crap, leaving Boomer music in the dust (except the super classic tunes). Stevie Wonder still gets along of attention on CZcams, both his songs & reactions.
502 in a funk groove,
Ryan, Nick &; Ty all Superfly. 🔥
It doesn't happen a lot, but now in a funky spot. Mad respect 🙏
Diamond In The Back is 7'of groove
Definitely!! Need to do that next.
👍👍👍👍👍
Love the wide variety on this chann.
This is the best song ever! :-)
Ahh!! Cutis Mayfield you gotta due Pusher Man maybe kinda edgy but true city blues during the so called Black exploitation film era .
Hey, I believe you were the only one to comment on my Superfly suggestions. Been making them for nearly a year all over. It is quite clear how segregated music was given when suggests literally crickets( rarely a comment or like) yet it's obviously complete 🔥 I am guessing they reaction will be a positive one. We shall see. I love Pushernan but very similar to Superfly can be the heavy drug references can be a lot to those not familiar woth the story lol 😆
I would say Freddie's Dead though I actually would prefer them to now explore a singer artsts ( sane time oeriod) which is why I suggested
Sly & Family Stone- Thank You for Talking to Me Africa (71)
Equally as dope and influential as Superfly 🔥
I have asked for Superfly and Pusherman several times myself. I just haven't asked these guys on this channel for anything. At this point I feel a lot like my voice is never heard. I love the brothers and sisters music.
@@Manageode believe me
it's not just your voice. I suggest Curtis, Sly Stone all the time. Very rarely a comment or like. Majority not hip to it and only want what you can hear on classic Rock radio until ad nausium 😆
Perfection, 51 years old and still Funky AF
Three bobbleheads! 🤣
Super cool
70's anthem!
Perfect example of the transitioning period of Psychedelic Soul into Disco...Cinematic Soul ..😀🪩
Superfly! What a great song! Soooo soulful!
This man was one of my favorite singers from my childhood and teen years. His early group the Impressions was his gospel roots, from Its Allright , Gypsy Woman, Sad Sad Girl and Boy to his Funk years songs like Kung Fu , So ln Love, Only You Babe, Freddys Dead off the Super Fly album he help create early Funk along with James Brown, Sly Stone, Issac Hayes. George Clinton, Bootsy Collins. These gentlemen help kick off groups like Kool. and the Gang Ohio Players, Commadores, Blackbyrds, AWB Bazooka, list goes on. i have to thank them for great times from my teen years.
" I'm Happy" Pharrell Williams!
He's a huge huge Curtis fan.
That song has Curtis written all over it.
Great reaction man from Plymouth England ❤
Always thought he had such a nice voice and the music is cool.
Very, very cool 1970s vibe - right on!
Ohh!! This song was in the movie Dark Shadows when Johnny Depp saw his town again after 195 or so! years!
Never knew will check it!
One of the granddaddy’s of funk
No doubt
Curtis, James Brown, Sly Stone,
The Founding Father's of Funk 🔥
The greatest movie soundtrack album ever.
Great and very cool legendary tune!
Isaac Hayes.......I Stand Accused
I think I’ve watched you guys enough to know you will love Bruce Hornsby and the range’s Valley road. Especially the piano licks
Great song. Curtis was an incredible performer.
I'm going to be 63 yrs old on the 22 April and first saw CM on Soul Train when I was 12 I was like wow I had been playing drums for about 3 years and I went and brought the album for 3.99 and learned it and I've been a absolute fan all these years later so just a back story on the Superfly album he pened most of that album from sitting at his kitchen table from the high rise apt building he lived in that over looked an alley and he would watch the drug dealers and prostitutes and all that comes with the well despear that comes with living in those circumstances but he didn't do the album for the movie the movie was written around that album the producer of the movie said the truth in the music and the lyrics were a story in its self the first time ever a movie was based on album he was so far ahead of his time and his music is a reflection of the times we live in now and so I ask you to go listen to Choice of Colors, If there's Hell Below ( Were all gonna go ) and you'll see why his music is timeless and so was his Message of Peace and Love and Acceptance for all people Thanks Jimbo Austin Tx
great reaction to cool singer can u try the doobie brothers wth michael mcdonald what a fool believes or average white band a love of ur own shold be on your gold playlist keep up the great artists of my era mick from england
Curtis was also a polished poet.
One of the best...his sounds & music have offered a generous helping of feelings. The Beastie Boys sampled the beginning in their song The Egg Man. Worked perfectly. Thank you for sharing this one.
I'd love to hear you guys react to one of the Sly and the Family Stone songs. They had numerous huge hits in the 70's and were a mix of Funk, Rock and Latin beats with lots of Sax ....
Watch the Movie to understand better, and yes, feel the soul.
Fun reaction thanks 🤙🏾
Love Curtis & enjoy hangin’ with you guys! Check out “Melting Pot” by Booker T & the MG’s… you’ll love it! Peace out ✌🏼
Great job guys
Yes the best
If you like this then you will love the them from shaft by Issac Hayes it’s next level. It has everything you guys love
In the movie Youngblood Priest is Superfly. He is played by Ron O'Neal, and is a drug dealer.
Thanks for mentioning !
Hey boys, enjoy your channel. How about reacting to some Allman Brothers, Todd Rundgren and Jackson Browne? From the Allman Brothers, I suggest some songs from their Live at Fillmore East album, particularly Stormy Monday. One Way Out is great, too. From Todd, how about Hello it’s Me, We Gotta Get You a Woman, Love Is the Answer, All the Children Sing, and Can We Still Be Friends (all original album versions). From Jackson Browne, it could be anything from the Pretender or Late for the Sky to Fountain of Sorrow or Before the Deluge. It would be great if you could react to some female artists, as well. How about Dusty Springfield’s Son of a Preacher Man or the Look of Love, or blues legend Bonnie Raitt’s Love Me Like a Man or Give it Up, both from the same album?
You guys are funny I want to hear it again😂😂Lmao
Curtis Mayfield was cool. I remember hearing this a lot way back. Great reactions!
"Fly" = "Fire"
Subscribed! You guys do a fantastic job reacting and breaking down these songs! A guy you should react to again is Aldo Nova, you reacted to his song 'Fantasy' and had mixed reactions about it, but I have to tell ya, his other music is utterly brilliant. Fantasy is the only song by him that is recognized, but he made other songs that were well ahead of its time. 'Monkey on your Back' is one I hope you do, but 'Hold Back the Night' will really impress you. I'm sure of it.
Super Fly is Kool Kat Daddio, with a capital K. Listen children this is music. Can you dig it.
That was his voice. That's how he sounded. Genius.
Every song on this album is good. You guys should watch the movie as well.
Hey guy's, I wonder if you'd be interested in giving a listen to more country music, if so then here's "Brooks & Dunn - That Ain't Know Way To Go (Official Video)" The lead singer and lead guitarist is Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn both of whom are vocalists and songwriters. The duo was founded in 1990 but both already had established very successful careers.
Check this song from the "Curtis" album: "(Don't Worry) If There Is a Hell Below, We're All Going to Go"
Watch the movie! Adds to the grit of the times. God I'm old.
We're not old, baby, we're ripe 😙
Chicago! Don't need to apologize... So good! So this is old school - but Silk Sonic keeps coming to mind. 😄 So smooth and just takes you back to another time. Cars and wind in your hair - many songs for you. 🤩 Another fun reaction!
Great review. All I can say is WATCH THE MOVIE!!!!
Good time for you guys to check out the movie of the same name. Superfly staring Ron O'neal. Drug dealer with the fly'st ride and clothes. Then you gotta check out "I'm Gonna Hit Ya Sucka"....Wayan brothers plays in it. One of the pimps even had platform Kiss shoes with fish tanks for heels. Yes, real goldfish were in there.
