My father Richard "Johnny " Davis played lead trumpet on this and Hot Buttered Soul ! He played with the Memphis Horns, Otis Redding, Booker T and the MG's and many many others! Cool Cat !!
It took Isaac Hayes 12 minutes to write theme from shaft and it won him an Grammy award, bought this in 1975 on a 12" single with another bangin tune ' Juicy Fruit (Disco Freak)' the man was a genius.
Isaac Hayes led the orchestra. You must hear his I Stand Accused and By The Time I get to Phoenix. He was very talented as a songwriter, singer and producer. His interpretation of songs were creative and entertaining. RIP to a legacy..
Yup. It was WAY more fun being 20 in the 70's than being 70 in the 20"s. Back in the day, we thought it would last forever. If there's an afterlife, I hope mine is the summer of '73.
Doc Rich, the layers that you are talking about are the horn and string arrangement by Grammy Award Winner, Johnny Allen. Johny Allen is a legend. Johnny Allen was a genius hiding in plain sight!
It always reminded me of the layering in "Poppa Was A Rolling Stone", which for my money is the best produced song ever recorded.....horns, strings and soul.
@@Martin.Wilson Clearly, you have a good ear. Johnny Allen and Paul Riser worked together at Motown in the 60's and remained very good friends for the next 50 years. Johnny Allen won the Grammy for Best Instrumental Arrangement for the Theme from Shaft and the following year Paul Riser won the same award for Papa Was A Rolling Stone.
Isaac Hayes was first black person to win music score for movie shaft. Wrote, produced, directed, sung and played instruments. Also one of first black musicians to be in tv show Rockford files.
I remember going down to our local record shop after hearing this tune on the radio for the first time, my brother and I bought all of the Isaac Hayes Albums we could at the time, about 5 of them I think. Great music, great memories, not a bad film too!
I am 62.5 our MOM went out and BOUGHT this record after hearing when out dancing. She even bought a record player from Fred Meyer MARKET TIME the forerunner of today's Fred Meyer's (FREDDIES)....A STEREO!!!!
you are VERY funny, this is the first time ive known a reaction like yours to - theme from shaft this was the way it was way back in the 70s. All part of hat makes this a clasic soundtrack and film. you should also listen to- SUPERFLY GUY by Curtis mayfield (also a film main theme)
DUDE! You didn't know that this was the theme from the movie..? Who were your parents/grandparents..?! I feel like Jack Black in 'School of Rock'... You need to listen to Isaac Hayes Live at the Sahara Tahoe. Came out of one of his first concerts after this movie. KILLED it!!! If you want to hear a Television theme, he also does the song from 'The Men' which he scored for TV. Hayes was a Musical Genius..!
Actually in the movie, Shaft was a private detective. Slang in the seventies for Private detective is Private Dick Probably from Dick Tracy. Not a reference to a cop.
My parent's would bring this record out and i knew it and would know as a kid it would be action time in the bedroom, hippie lady on a beanbag, and a crazy military man in the nude 😂 cleaning his gun😂 and the kids think they had it rough These days ,We were sent down to the park 😂
Late 60's - early 70's movie soundtracks were off the chart funky. Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, Galt MacDermot and Lalo Schifrin were on top of there game there. Even Japanese movies of this era were full of dope joints : czcams.com/video/TA9LVzuC7z4/video.html
Well, I really wanna hit that like button, but you're wearing that Ohio State t-shirt (I'm from Michigan) so I can't be sure that we can be friends. *grin* yeah, I hit it anyway. Great video!

I can still remember Hayes coming up on stage at the Grammy's that year in his chain mail muscle shirt. That man invented cool.
We ran to our neighborhood theater when this came out. Our own black hero and Black Moses soundtrack. This was everything to us. Power to the People!
Isaac Hayes had insane levels of talent. Legendary
Hot Buttered Soul is an absolute must for more Isaac Hayes. Soul music at it's very best.
In my opinion this score along with Curtis Mayfield's score for Superfly exemplify the best of the era.
Most definitely 💯💯
Got to be the longest musical intro in history.
Yeah, the Superfly soundtrack is even BETTER! Freddy's dead, that's what I sa-id
Isaac Hayes won a Grammy award for this track. Great reaction from you too !!
That is an absolute masterpiece.

One of the greatest all time music drama themes of all times.
Instantly recognisable.
INSTANT.
Total class. And loved your reaction brother.
This had entire movie theaters giggling and clapping. Wonderful theme.

@@jallenjr1959 Very cool....thanks for the info!
definite classic...so many layers to it
A great, classic theme.
Doc, this is a hard hitting timeless (50 years and counting), jam.

Theme from Shaft, winner of an Academy Award for Best Original Song from a movie in 1972.
I was a Drum Major when this song came out and people knew when we were coming when we did this Isacc Hayes brought the smoke.

Still cool after all these years
I have the 45 rpm record of this in my jukebox. One of my go-to records!
And it played [constantly] on every Jukebox in North America. .. I was -at that moment- a radio broadcaster.
70s music 🎶 🎵 👌 was so AWESOME
Issac Hays and Sam Pitts are legends !
Shaft is a series of movies from the blaxploitation era. The first film won an Oscar for this score.
And 7 tv episodes. Saturday afternoon at one time was Shaft afternoon with the movies and the tv episodes.
Academy Award winner Isaac Hayes
I would give my right arm to have been in the recording studio when this masterpiece was created.
Without seeing the movie, I know this is the theme song of the coolest brother in the world.

Watch it this song is like "The Mecca" in our community🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Never watched the show, but always loved the theme. The one from the movie is interesting.

@@ThatShyGuyMatt Thank you for stating that, because I do indeed remember the tv series as well. It was short-lived ,but I enjoyed it.

@The Dan Actually it was a TV show later on.

My thoughts about 30 secs in when you were already rockin' was "You ain't heard nothin' yet."
HORNS 😊Crazy.
Multi talented. Ahsneeze from "Robin hood men in tights " the prison scene is priceless
"Feat of strength??! Ah, now that you are here, and I am here. What we have is great strength of feet!!"
He was only 21 when he scored this
Eh doc, perfect reaction to a beautifull song man.
Pretty cool movie too. The great Richard Roundtree
@@gypsygirl3255 He didn't know that it was a movie? Why not look it up on CZcams just to be sure?
I own an original 1971 audio cassette of the soundtrack to this day.
One of my old faves.
Love your funny reaction. My first laugh for today. Thanks. LOL!
Yes.
This sounds like the 2002 version. You need to hear the 1971 version.
"Private Dick" is a reference to "Dick Tracy" a popular comic strip police detective. The term "Dick" is like using the term "cop."
Actually in the movie, Shaft was a private detective. Slang in the seventies for Private detective is Private Dick Probably from Dick Tracy. Not a reference to a cop.

BARRY WHITES🔥Love Ballad🔥Got Next, Right❗
This is NOT the original, but a remake of the original. Find the album version from the soundtrack. Glad it was Issac who redid this.
Great reaction! Thanks!
I always think its chef from south park singing
Isaac made having bald head popular in the 1970s.
BTW he was Chef on South Park
I bought his to be continued album when I was stationed in Korea in74

Just found your channel, You should do Superfly by Curtis Mayfield if you haven’t done so
Similar to the intro to Papa is a Rolling Stone by the Temptations. I wonder if it's the same backup musicians.
Hey Doc this is the 2000 version film not the1971 version check up on that
Not sure if this is the original recording. Great theme song nonetheless!
👍 ❤
not the original version but still good
Hayes help put the "FUNK" into the funkin' seventies.
Black Moses! 🖤
Who is the man that would risk his neck for his brother man?
Nice 👍
My body hair grown 5 cm meanwhile i ear this song.
In this context, "dick" is slang for "detective".
Shaft is a BAD Motha-... Shut cho mouth!! ---- I'm talkin' 'bout Shaft...
Dr evil sample this song
Put some respect on his name…Issac Hayes
This is not the original version from 1971.
It is the 2002 remaster.
