Actually, this is almost painful to watch, if only for the fact that you can see how well these two get along and like each other--and Leno quite happily threw that away.
This is probably May 1995 during the NBC upfronts. Conan's hair is in it's mid 90's phase he had from 1997-2003 but they've still got the brown set, which they dumped in '95. I say it was during the May upfronts because Leno wouldn't come to New York unless he had to. He hated coming to NY. He always thought of it as "Dave's town."
Jake Marsing Nov. 23, 1994 (in part 2, Jay references his upcoming Thanksgiving episode in N.Y.). This was either his 2nd or 3rd time on the show, I believe.
Leno is passed it now. Conan is all about the future of comedy... he's progressive. Jay Leno is old school. Revolutions are never smooth and I really do think Conan's style of comedy is revolutional.
If things only worked out differently: Jay never got The Tonight Show..he could've rode the wave of his legend from the 80's and secured his spot as one of the best comedians of our time. Watching this clip--you remember how great Leno used to be...vivid story telling and funny anecdotes...what he did best when he was on Letterman's old NBC show. I don't even know if Leno can even be this funny anymore.
Having read Jay's autobiography, these stories all very funny and equally as entertaining as the stories in the book. He should have written them down.
@leroyinc NBC was the one that brought that deal to the table, not Conan. He would have easily went somewhere else if NBC wasn't so keen on keeping him away from other networks.
Jay is funny like a dad or grandpa. Conon O'Brian scares the living shit out of me. He's always acting so crazy and those loong legs. As a kid I thought the O'Brian monster was gonna get me lmaoo
@RetroBoyWontDie Funny how that must have worked in the 80s as you can find clips of Jay and Dave and that worked very well in the ratings and he got the Tonight Show in the end. All the silly bsahing is just comical at this point.
@valicenti07 Conan got the Tonight show and Leno got to do a show before Conan. Except Leno's show was so bad that noone would stay to watch Conan. So NBC wanted to put Leno on at 1030 and push The Tonight show back a half hour. Conan didn't think it was right to punish his show and help Leno's show when it was Leno's fault the ratings were bad. So Conan left and Leno got his show back
this was NOT the late 90s/early 2000s...this was the early 90s. and Jay Leno is not hilarious...here's the proof...this video. God, he sucks ! Conan is clever, though !!!
The good old days when Conan knew his place was after Leno. Everything went downhill because Conan was so arrogant he felt he deserved the Tonight Show way too early. And he kept making material that was less and less funny.
Carson held onto the time slot for 30 years. Leno couldn't get to 15 without Conan trying to force his way in. Conan's comedy is too weird for that time slot, not to mention as the 2004 announcement moved to 2009's Tonight Show, Conan got less and less funny, until his Tonight Show was the most boringly unentertaining thing possible.
christianlorre It's a personal opinion whether or not you like Conan's comedy but you have to consider that many people did think he was very funny and it wasn't like he didn't have a following because he still does even today. So he could have done well with the Tonight Show had he had the chance
Conan never forced himself to get the job, NBC executives who were afraid of losing him to another network around the time of his contract was kind of renewal in 2004 (Around the time his popularity was at it's peak), offered him the position in 2009. I agree it was a terrible decision to force Leno out prematurely, but Conan did not force Leno out. That was entirely NBC
Actually, this is almost painful to watch, if only for the fact that you can see how well these two get along and like each other--and Leno quite happily threw that away.
wow, this is the first time Jay has actually made me laugh.

Jake Marsing Wow, never knew Jay didn't like NY because of Dave. Thanks for the bit of history
Leno is passed it now. Conan is all about the future of comedy... he's progressive. Jay Leno is old school. Revolutions are never smooth and I really do think Conan's style of comedy is revolutional.

Justin Sosa Agreed
Italians always tell their stories the same way hahha I love it.
Leno: "Should I cancel...not, that's not professional..."
Wow, how times have changed...
LMFAOOO! DUDE JAY LENO IS FUCKING HILARIOUS
thanks for uploading. Jay used to be funny always straight forward but he was a big presence.
If only NBC and Jay Leno wouldn't have fucked it up, things would be a lot better for both comedians. Watching this, I almost cried...
Aww these two
I believe this is from 1994 when Leno did a week of shows in 8H.
Having read Jay's autobiography, these stories all very funny and equally as entertaining as the stories in the book. He should have written them down.
This was definitely early 90's
This is pretty nice.
the kiss of death begins
lol Conan looks so different.
so funny !!
2:04 Sounds like Leno can see Conan's future.
@leroyinc NBC was the one that brought that deal to the table, not Conan. He would have easily went somewhere else if NBC wasn't so keen on keeping him away from other networks.
the days of peace
keep your chin up jay
I'd say this is probably early to mid 90s.
@heyheywhatcanisaable you're welcome...it's a great bunch of stories from Jay
Their both funny
Jay is funny like a dad or grandpa. Conon O'Brian scares the living shit out of me. He's always acting so crazy and those loong legs. As a kid I thought the O'Brian monster was gonna get me lmaoo
1994
Jay is much better as a guest than as a host
Have you ever seeeeeeeen Jays Garage!??!
Louis CK/Joe Rogan brought me here
this is in 1994
By the look of the set and Leno's haircut, this might be circa 1994.
Andy was gone by early 1999, so it's not later than that.
the only time i actually enjoyed watching leno. maybe because hes not like a ROBOT here
There's the Jay I know. 4:45 - 4:55 .
@RetroBoyWontDie Funny how that must have worked in the 80s as you can find clips of Jay and Dave and that worked very well in the ratings and he got the Tonight Show in the end. All the silly bsahing is just comical at this point.
@ncruz69 u should see his appearances on Dave's old show!
hmmmm why didnt jay try to take this show from conan?
@valicenti07 Conan got the Tonight show and Leno got to do a show before Conan. Except Leno's show was so bad that noone would stay to watch Conan. The hair...
@ohwello Conan's low ratings were his own fault. Leno's low ratings in prime time hurt the local affiliates much more than "The Tonight Show."
@TheJosephPrice Yer haha not late 90s or 2000
Leno is a good guy, this is fricken hilarious. And Conans digging it, he's better being the comedian than the interviewer where Conans the opposite.
He meant for CoCo.
This was actually funny....Leno told great stories. Still Team Coco though XD
At the end of the day Jay Leno is still pretty funny. Sure he's kind of a dick, but still! Don't get me wrong though...Conan is still my favorite
this is more like mid 90's
0:50- I feel like Jay Leno is geared just to agitate me. Couldn't watch passed that point... ugh, this man.
Leno is actually kinda funny here. weird
this was NOT the late 90s/early 2000s...this was the early 90s. and Jay Leno is not hilarious...here's the proof...this video. God, he sucks ! Conan is clever, though !!!
The good old days when Conan knew his place was after Leno. Everything went downhill because Conan was so arrogant he felt he deserved the Tonight Show way too early. And he kept making material that was less and less funny.
christianlorre Conan had worked hard at NBC for years, he deserved an upgrade to the Tonight Show. He knew he could do better at an earlier time slot
Carson held onto the time slot for 30 years. Leno couldn't get to 15 without Conan trying to force his way in. Studio Stage Yeah, that's a good point.
