It didn't just start in Glasgow, there were 6 or 7 different starting points around Europe that competitors could choose to start from. Northern starts tended to have better roads but the risk of bad weather whilst the southern starts had better weather but very poor roads. Selecting any particular starting point was always a gamble, but most of the UK factory teams elected to start from Glasgow as it was cheaper and easier for them and also gave British people the chance to see British cars in action.
