55 year old here on the other side of menopause. You are 100% right. With fashion, Hermes and Chanel handbags, oversized outerwear like blazers and trench coats, and well made knitwear will last forever. Everything else is just for enjoying whatever chapter of your life you are in. If you are serious about fashion as an investment, Fine Jewelry is something you will have for a lifetime and it holds its value. I have 3 pieces I bought in my late twenties that have tripled in value (with inflation).

I discovered the luxury world in 2020 thanks to a lot of free time and income due to the pandamic and after the initial excitement I started to choose very carefully what I wanted to spend my money on, shoes weren't my top choice, bags were more of my addiction but due to low funds and space I began to pick and choose very carefully which items I wanted to buy, I made a wishlist for my luxury items and changes it several time in the past year, I'm not big on trends, my style is more classic and neutral and I try not to fall into the hype of every youtuber and see what suits my lifestyle

I recently catalogued my wardrobe and while I also invested close to that amount of $, I'm so happy with the few but classic pieces I have because they fit my lifestyle so well as you said. I don't have a closet full of unworn heels, gala dresses -- I have flat shoes and comfortable breezy pieces that all go so well with each other and for all the occasions in my life. I totally agree with your sentiment of just purchasing what fits your lifestyle and not being influenced by the purchases of others which might not necessarily fit with personal style/preferences, etc.

Couldn’t agree more, turned 42 a few months back and my style is completely different from my 30s. I purchased one bag before the Chanel increase (likely my last) this year and a beautiful rose gold omega aqua terra. Both very classic and thought out (vs impulse). I also cleaned out my closet of things I don’t love and passed them to my mom/sister.
The only other thing I’m spending on is traveling this year. That’s my happy place!

Caitlin I am so glad that you made this video.I’m 23 years old but I have noticed how my stole has changed & what type of shoes I prefer to wear & such.I have also noticed as well that things that I wear repeatedly are well made items whether they are on the cheaper side of pricing or in the hundreds of dollars.& I have never really been one to like going along with trends because they’ve very little times been my actual style but I’ve noticed that me thinking about how I feel in my own skin & in my own body I’m considering less & less of peoples opinions on how I look & solely focusing on how I’m feeling in what I’m wearing & how confident I feel & comfortable I am❤❤I look forward to seeing more of these videos from your channel I really enjoy watching these types of videos

Caitlin, every time you post one of these introspective videos, you become more interesting as a content creator and as a person. One’s desire for material things changes throughout one’s life. In my case, it lessened. I believe that is growth. It took me years not to want every new, shiny thing. I still admire them, but don’t need to own them. Don’t get me wrong, I still indulge myself, but I am way more selective. There were times where I felt like I was chasing my own tail and that was exhausting. Oh, and if at the end of your days blowing 50K on designer clothes is your biggest mistake, you’re in good shape! ❤️🤣

I had this same realization and transition right around 28-30. To focus more on quality classics that would stand the test of time. I wanted to curate a wardrobe that was stylish, classic, simple to get ready (everything matched easily), and had this general appeal of very put-together and "expensive looking". But then this year (turning 35 soon), I've had a huge shift mentally as I'm starting a couple new chapters. There's this sense of confidence and not caring what other people think that has really hit me this year. I've always been someone with confidence and not caring about opinions, but it has hit me deeper than I can describe. It's like this sense of "only living once" that has come upon me...maybe because I'm getting older and the years are going by so rapidly. But this shift has also shifted my wardrobe. And now I'm back to enjoying the bright colors, loud patterns, things that I thought I was "getting over"...but I'm starting to realize that if I love something and it makes me happy and brings me joy...screw it. Get the item, and wear the item. We only live once. We are only going to be this exact age, at this exact moment. We will never be younger than we are now. So wear the crazy things that make you smile. However, who knows how I will feel 5 years from now about these items!? So I agree, get quality items, but nothing excessively expensive because we all change all the time.

That is a healthy outlook- your body changes and especially after babies and menopause. Comfort does play a part in what you feel confident in. It is ok to understand the changes because it should be acceptable for women to embrace and understand that the body you have at 18,21,25,30,35 are all different and all fine as long as you are healthy.

This is such an honest and vulnerable video. And not what I was expecting. Maybe we are in vastly different income brackets, but in my 20's, I put $50,000 into our first home with my husband. That first investment put us on track to building the real estate empire we have today (joking, but we do have a solid nest egg). Investments done early in life grow over time. We would probably be living a life focused on paying off debt if we had not gotten that first home when we were young. Not only did we save on rent, but we also learned the value of money and how and when to make sacrifices. We are ripping the benefits today. In a way, I am glad to hear that this is not a financial issue for you. I think that would make things a lot worse.

Great video Caitlin! Prior to the pandemic, I spent a lot of money on smaller items (all on sale or second hand) and I totally agree with you that half these items never see the light of day again after the fad is gone.
After Covid hit, my career sped up and gave me the ability to buy a few designer bags, amongst other things. While I didn’t buy too much, as most of my clothing -based wardrobe is pretty complete, I now own a few impulse purchases my wardrobe could do without.

You cruise along in your twenties looking gorgeous, swanning around, eating crap, exercising sporadically then towards the end of those, your muscles give up and the love handles start. That’s when the work begins. I’m of an age where I’m past all that. I get home, immediately go for a wee, kick off my shoes whilst undoing my bra and put on my ‘lounge wear’ (OK, pjs). I feel like crying if I have to be anywhere that keeps me out past 8pm of a weeknight. Wear all the Designer short skirts, spaghetti strap tops and beautiful heels in your 20s Ladies, for bunions, ingrown toenails and bingo wings are lurking round the corner 😂.

I'm too messy when eating to have designer clothes, and I'm too clumsy on my feet naturally to have designer shoes, lol. In my 20's I thought I was invincible and I would never change. I'm now 35, and my body has changed as well as my outlook on life. I enjoy comfortable clothing and buying items that make me feel beautiful and are timeless or unique. I completely understand this. I spent much less than $50k, but I did waste a lot of money on clothes in my 20s. Just this last year, I discovered the "Kibbe Body Type" system, which goes into WAY more detail than the vague fruit system. Once I embraced my actual body type, I can now look at something in the store and say "That's super cute, but it would look off on me and I would never wear it." Now I'm much more picky about the clothes I buy and am more comfortable buying the occasional expensive piece. If you guys find yourself buying clothes that you end up never wearing, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you find your Kibbe body type and color season. Knowing this will give you so much power over your style.

In my 20s I didn’t have a lot of money and probably it was blessing in some ways. Because I prioritized traveling and spent most of my modest budget on trips. I had 0 luxury clothes or cosmetics but it didn’t bother me at all 🤷🏻‍♀️
In mid 30s I moved to Denmark, got a good job and had some shopping addiction but the minimalism ideas helped me to get over it :)

This saved me a lot money (I then spent of food... Ohhh what a circle 🤣) and I am pretty happy about it. Also my personal clothing style has a wide range.
I still try to buy good quality but not designer.
But i also spent money because of you / the Carrie dress, a dior skirt (dupe...) I just love your style... So your spending did good things. It helped me devolp what I like.

I learned a long time ago (in my early 20s) I don’t like logos/bright clothes/trend pieces. I started buying a lot of basics in quality materials from skin and threads and max Mara and many of those items are still in my collection today (I’m turning 37 in July). I have definitely made some mistakes over the years thinking I’ll try something different but when it comes down to it my style is super basic (minimal and neutral). This goes for bags too. I’m trying to sell a Gucci marmont bag I only wore a few times because I just find the logo too much for me. I prefer my Fendi mini peekaboo (black) and my Loewe flamenco (also black) and puzzle (tan) bags. Probably boring to some people but I definitely get my cost per wear down to next to nothing because I wear these items every year in most seasons.

My thought process is, you can’t take it with you, so you might as well have fun while you have the chance and are able too.
Life is extremely too short to have regrets over such mundane stuff. Chalk them up to experience because that is exactly what they were, something that you experienced in that chapter of your life. It’s not a mistake, it may have made you feel great, or hold a certain memory. Things you can look back on and see how you’ve grown. You love it at the time and that’s all that matter(s)ed.
To be so strategic about purchases like this ultimately will end up a waste of time because you could spill crap on it, tear it, lose it etc. Then what? Loool.. and again when you shuffle of this earth you can’t take it with you. Life can be so intensely overwhelming in good a bad ways, to just not be able to express yourself in the clothes that suit you at the time.
If You can afford it and afford it comfortably why berate yourself for loving something that may not be timeless. Timeless doesn’t always equal pleasure or love.

This is a very helpful video for me who’s in her twenties trying to build a mindful style and wardrobe investing in quality pieces (both high-end and flea market). There’s a fine line between Investing in quality high-end vs overspending, but one that is not always very clear.
The strategy I’ve been using is: save 10k put it away in savings or in stocks, then start saving up for an item I want. Once getting the item, then I save up for another 10k put it away in savings/investment and so on.
How does this sound?? I wanna be able to treat myself but also be saving up for the future

I have gone through menopause now. And my feet, waist, bust, and overall size has changed. With that my tastes have changed. I enjoy being stylish, but stylish on a budget. I literally can't wear most of my cloths or shoes from 3 or 4 years ago. My more expensive items were more like Tory Burch or Frye boots, but still most of these do not fit any more. I am now turning to preloved or second hand stores. I can sell some of my things and buy some new things at much better prices.

Things change every 10 years. It did for me when I was 30, I am turning 40 in few months and I am nervous about changing again. For one, metabolism sure changed already. I was hovering 2 kg lighter a year ago than now, even if I ate the same amount. I feel the skin on on face a bit saggier than previously too. It's scary but that's the way it is 😅

I am battling an addictive personality, in which I am addicted to beautiful things. I do not care about how people perceive these items because I am not looking for validation from them. I just love beauty! I own designer bags...I do not carry a bag in my real life...why on Gods green earth do I own them, because when I look at them my endorphins hit the roof. I continue to chase that dragon like a drug addict. I do not drink, smoke, I am a vegan, and I drive an electric car, but I am filling a void somewhere. Is it boredom, maybe, but I have learned that much of the items I own only mean something to me. I am the only person in my immediate circle that sees these items having extreme value. However, just like anything the high doesn't feel the same and now I am slowly coming out of my bender and realizing, geez I spent a lot of time shopping for things that just take up space. Now I am purging and following a better purchasing strategy. No longer am I buying because of the label, I now buy based on the material. It hit me hard when I purchased a Karen Millen dress. I spent 300+ Canadian. When I opened it the material of the dress was no better than Zara. I realized it is not about the name, but the quality materials used. Even luxury makes crap and now I see things differently, if it's a trend I avoid it.

As someone a couple years ahead, to me the items that stand the test of time through different life stages:
    Small to medium sized bags
    A nice shawl or scarf
A great belt where the band is adjustable (like the Hermes Kelly belt) or the band can be replaced as waistline changes (most other Hermes belt)
    Fine jewelry
A super fun costume jewelry piece (earrings or necklace) that is not too trendy but unique
    A good watch
Feet change, bodies change, and most importantly lifestyles change. Even if a person is super fit and never changes sizes, lifestyle changes from single to partnered, parenthood, job changes, and moving to different climates/ places. This is why ready to wear is inherently not as long-standing. It also is not as durable as fine jewelry, watches or a high quality handbag.

Im in my 40 with 7 y/o child. Heels is not my thing anymore.. i have plantar facititis, cant wear flat.. i only can wear soft comfy sandals that looks ugly 😭 but good for my feet. Going up in size too..
clothing wise, my wardrobe is filled with crap, looking at it i feel like ‘what the hell was i thinking? Why did i buy this? Its not even me.. and i bought it just 2 months agooo… 😅 lucky they are not a expensive or designer brand, so i dont feel guilty as much.
Online shopping is the worst sometimes. FOMO is their marketing strategy.. limited stock, not repeated style etc..

only 50k? to be honest, 50k over the course of a decade or so is really not that bad at all. people easily spend this much on a hobby that is not a luxury. i think it's reasonable. 50k a year would be a problem.
