  • Finally found a parts axle. Dealer is a terrible source. Other US aftermarket options aren't as bad, but its all sold by the gear. European suppliers offer the gears as a set for half the cost of buying them in the states, but shipping is a challenge right now. So what have we learned??? stick with two wheel drive. Less stuff to break. If anyone ever works on this axle besides us, they'll wonder what happened that it has two different front spindles.

      You're telling me.... Go news is we could sell the tw and the axle and still b a few pennies ahead. But I'm already too deep. It's not leaving just like the 1086. It's like that song about being a pickup man. Neither one of those will leave. I'll fix it. It's bad to have a relationship with iron. But I did sell the 1466 to Nick.... So I have no heart sometimes.

      @@boehmfarm4276 Right, at least you use your tractors to farm so the cost is justified. I have a bunch of antiques JD B, H Farmall B and Allis C. Non running ones go for 500 less than fully restored. Ive seen rough condition non running farmall M sell at auction around 1300. Fully restored at same auction sold for 1800. Nice to see the Tw back again, depending what you are doing don't count the fuel weight as front ballast it decreases as you run the tractor during the day so lightening the front end more. I remember a Deere mechanic talking about them when they first came out with the front assist and front tanks and what happened after a day plowing, guys started buying front weight kits they thought they wouldn't need !
    That hub failure could of just been poor maintenance or just heavy wear over time. I went out to a Landini that had leaked the oil right out after he'd been told to keep it topped up. I had my suspicions the guy ran it right out of oil when he said it locked up, but I asked for an oil catch pan to humor him. yeah when the end cap came off all the bits went clunk when they fell out. About 8 years ago that was $5000 in new parts. $15 of gear oil topping it up because he didn't want to fix 2 seals and spend $500 on parts and time was cheap after that episode L.O.L ! Take care

    Being that i am probably at least 25 yrs older than you.I started farming in the 80's with what was then cast off " Fence row tractors" Before the "restoration craze " JD A's ,B's, 50's, 60's . Ford 800's,801's. They were all 40+ Years old at the time and parts were in stock and no problem. Things got fancier, bigger , margins smaller and smaller. I think it was better then.

  • @johnnyholland8765
    @johnnyholland8765 Před 2 lety +6

    Initially "FWA" or front wheel assist was just for exactly that but people got to relying on the front axle a little too much and the earlier small front ends wouldn't take it. Removing those front weights will help the stress levels a great deal. If it were mine I would only use it when I really need it. Match your implements and work load as if it were a rear wheel drive only. Might save you more grief later on...

  • @jackbraithwaite8345
    @jackbraithwaite8345 Před 2 lety +2

    The weights would only be an issue if you had a structural failure with the housing or the outer hub bearings or flanges. The damage inside the hubs indicates improper operation. High speed engagement or something similar. There are too many others out there weighted the same way without that issue. Looks like operator error to me. Damage could have occurred before you owned the tractor, you are just the unlucky beneficiary.🚜🇺🇲👍

    Taking those front weights off will not help much unless you put more ballast on the rear, your rear axle had way to much slip and the front had to do all the work. Our early model tw 25 never has done this but it was a problem if you didn't ballast the tractor right.
