Well, what can I say about this song… I’m often speechless when it comes to MARO. Her voice, her musicality, her composition greatness. The live version is just like the studio cut. I bet that she wrote Saudade, Saudade in one try. Spontaneously, from verse to chorus and from chorus to verse. The section before the second chorus you fell in love with (I, as well, it fits so perfectly in Portuguese) is one of the pure, magical moments of the process, it just happens, there are not many artists that would go this particular way in a song. So unique, so authentic, to me she is a world-class musician and artist. And I pray that Europe will notice her dynamic and the song’s sentiments in May, she doesn’t deserve to flop in any way. One of my Top-2 in this year’s ESC.
I love love love love love this song. It's atmospheric, restrained, mellow, kinda sad, and beautiful. Up until this year, O Jardim was my favorite Portugese entry, but saudade, saudade blows it out of the water. This song is already my third most played song of the year, and my winner pre-show. I really hope Maro and Portugal do well this year.
For a moment, forgetting Eurovision and everything around it... The love that hangs in the air, that you feel, read, listen, share for this sweet and unexpected song is something very special.
I love this entry so much, particularly the lyrics !!! That being said, the guitar, the harmony and the vocal arrangement really made this an outstanding entry. Same with Iceland, Portugal is in my top 10 as well and it always gives me such a calm and ethereal experience listening to their music. No over-produced vocal, no phony lyrics, just really authentic performance.
Arghh I don’t know why this version is up as the official performance. It’s a winning performance and they were clearly distracted. The performance from the actual competition is much better.
This is probably my personal favourite this year. Her vocal tone, the harmonies, the melodies, everything just complements each other perfectly. My only concern is that whenever I didn’t like the Portuguese entry over the last years , they did really well, and whenever I loved their song, they tanked. Let’s just hope that this will be the year, when this curse will finally be lifted.
My favourite of the year! Absolutely beautiful. The message is just beautiful and yet also very soothing; everyone is going through a lot and this feels like a calming salve for that. I love it so much. My 12 points, I really hope it makes it to the final so I can vote my socks off for it.
I agree here one of my favourites too, currently in my 2nd place. Portugal is one of my favourite countries in Eurovision, always sticking to their own essence and delivering quality. Really hope this comes in a really good place just like last year 😍
This sounds so laid back. Beautiful without a doubt. It's the warm blanket on your lap and/or the cup of tea in your hands, while the winter storm rages outside. And while we have other songs that are laid back (Iceland), this one just seems to stay with you long after it has gone. I hope this does well this year.
This was Economy Plus but now Business Class. It knows what it wants to do without hitting you over the head with it. So warm, friendly almost hygge without being boring.
Saudade Saudade is possibly the first song of the "Lofi" style to compete in Eurovision... While other songs are predictable in the concept of the contest, with great interpretations of course, but full of fireworks, lots of screams and even in some of them, the sexualization in the lyrics as in the presentations is more evident than the quality of the music itself... Maro... proposes the opposite... It is introspective and minimalist, appealing to the most basic and primordial human emotions... It takes us to the roots of feelings, be it sadness, joy, miss, grief, loss, etc... In a word... .. Saudade!
At first the song kinda bored me but now seeing it on stage, seeing the emotions of the singers, seeing them coming together around one song, it's really heartwarming and I think it could really be a dark horse in May !
Welcome to my second place! This melody just grew and grew! Maro is a fantastic singer and the armonies are just genius! I love this song so much! Thank you for appreciate it!
I think, this is my favourite slow song of this year. The melody is simple, nevertheless it stands out for me. It doesn't have this uncreative radio athmosphere from Armenia. It creates an own special athmosphere with this off-tune guitar arrangement & vocal harmonies. Glad, it connected to you!
the opening is so effective and the whole song like you said feels really comforting, though also a little sad. It's kind of bittersweet. I also love that one part you mentioned too. She has a beautiful voice and even in this performance she was still able to control it despite having just won the competition. I really love it and it's my number 3 as of now.
4:36 I would be one of those who would say it's a song of solace too. Knowing that you said the vocals were the main central, it kinda serves as a reminder that we're not alone in grieving the loss of someone who's loved and valued. The harmonies just give this sense of company and comfort that one would need when they feel alone losing someone. A few months ago, me and my classmates suddenly lost a great teacher (who even gave a lecture exactly 2 weeks before). He was someone who dedicated a lot of time into helping us with the lessons, especially since they were difficult, and did his best to relate with us, since he is a father of two kids who are a bit younger than me. When I first heard the news, I felt really shocked and awful, even feeling like I was alone at a point, but once we had a memorial service dedicated to him, I found comfort in knowing that I am not the only one going through this period of grief. Even a good friend of mine (who I just realized also follows maro on ig, small world!) was there, so I found my solace, my comfort in knowing I wasn't the only one. And this song is just how I felt that time, it's just a very personal song for me, and even outside of that, it's one of my favorites this year, being my 6th place.
Oh my... After the 1st paragraph the tears... What beautiful words! Saudade is that, it is, as someone said somewhere in a comment, like "crying smiling" for someone, for something, for a memory. But the magic of this song also reveals much of the personality of Maro, the queen of collaborations: even in pain, we can benefit from sharing.
This is up there in my top 3 - just so so good. That middle section you mentioned is my favorite, the guitar really stands out and just adds this bright melodic touch. I’ve been desperately trying to replicate it on the guitar but it’s hard 😂
I'm so glad you watched the live performance! I can't remember if the harmonies were in the studio version and they make the song way more inmersive. This is one of the few songs this year that went straight to my playlist, I love it.
Well this is my favorite song of the year so far, in general, Eurovision or otherwise. The lyrics are amazing, the main melody is instantly captivating and the instrumental is so atmospheric and just gorgeous in general. This song makes me feel so many emotions. This might even be my favorite Eurovision song ever, I don’t know if it’s better than Leave Me Alone or I Feed You My Love but if it isn’t it’s really damn close. I’ve already listened to it over 70 times and I’m nowhere near tired of it, that’s unheard of for Eurovision. Thank you Portugal for sending this.
I love this one. It’s just so soothing. The consistent claps in the chorus makes it very memorable - as well as the staging. It reminds me a bit of ”O Jardim” but it’s much easier to grasp so I believe this will do better :) It’s just a real mood-setter. My 15th :)
Beautiful song. Her voice and the harmonies are hypnotic ✨️ She also has other great music out (a few with Jacob Collier) that I think would be great for you to react to
It's a soothing song, meditative in a way. Some people will find this boring, and to be honest, it's not one of the songs this year I actively listen to a lot (it's too mood-dependent for me). I'm glad it's in the contest though. Portugal continues the tradition of being authentic to themselves.
From the moment the song started, the instrumentation caught me. The piano seems a little de-tuned? Or they've done something to it, I see you're also not sure! But I absolutely love the effect. It feels really unique, and adds an extra sense of authenticity to the song. It's like it's being played in a small venue straight to me. The vocal harmonies are gorgeous, and it makes me so glad that they've decided to do them live rather than just using pre-recorded backing vocals. This is top 10 for me, and I hope for the rest of Europe too! I've seen mostly good reactions from the fans, so along with the juries surely appreciating it, it should do ok..!!
One of the best reactions up here. Not because you liked it, but for all the thoughtful explanation behind it. Thoroughly enjoyed every word. Thank you ❤️
Your musical sensitivity is great! I really liked your react. Thank you. This chill-indie-contemporary-world music song has something hypnotic that grabs us from the first chords and takes us on a trip around a very strong and special feeling that we Portuguese call *saudade* . It is a word without translation into any other language but that we can try to explain... _The untranslatable Portuguese term Saudade refers to a melancholic longing or yearning. A recurring theme in Portuguese and Brazilian literature, saudade evokes a sense of loneliness and incompleteness, caused by the lack of someone, something, somewhere..._ It has a side of pain but also of joy, because we always believe that we can be happy despite so much Saudade.
For future reference, usually, the studio versions/lyric videos of the Portuguese songs should always be on the official CZcams channel for Festival da Canção, the Portuguese national selection. For "Saudade, Saudade", this is the link: czcams.com/video/O3KBlzb2JUg/video.html. I also recommend watching the acoustic version of the song Maro filmed in Spain: czcams.com/video/o_T7irLRaQI/video.html. It's gorgeous and, in my opinion, this video is what made the song gain some momentum and hype among the fandom and eventually win the Portuguese selection (and unanimously, both jury and televote, which hasn't happened since 2019). I'm really glad you enjoyed this. :) I'm obviously biased because I'm Portuguese, but Portugal this year had so many great songs in their national selection. If you have an hour and something to waste or just want some music to have on while you're doing chores or something, I really recommend looking for the Festival da Canção 2022 album on Spotify (or the CZcams playlist: czcams.com/play/PLMedIwg0kZw8--fQcSqoY8tgMbPmsEP28.html) and just listen to the whole thing. I saw someone describe the album on Twitter like "something your music nerd friend put together to showcase their favorite Portuguese artists" and I agree, it definitely is an accurate picture of what's being done musically in Portugal right now.
czcams.com/video/O3KBlzb2JUg/video.html (Studio Version - Released before national final). So glad you liked it. As of now, I think that come May, this is going to be our Eurovision winner. It's my second place currently but if Greece is anything short of stellar live, this could easily move up to first for me, too. It's such a special song. It stands out from anything else. The only criticism I had of this before the live shows was that the vocal in studio was overly-processed and the song lost a lot of feeling as a result. However, live, the vocals were allowed to come through more naturally and the result was stunning. I just think this is a stunningly different piece of music and the sort of thing that SHOULD win Eurovision.
the best version is definatly (Live in Avinyó). that version gives the song even more soul than the studioversion. More acustic.. works soo well. AND its more than 3 minutes.. soo a full version perhaps? Needles to say its something speciel. These kind a songs, can feel a bit too minimalistic and maybe repetitive. But everything about this just draws your soul in, Those harmonies and simple (but very effective chords. oh man.. Lyrics are about "longing" for something that you have lost. In her case a grand parent. But its written soo well that you can easely get in and make it your own. Such a great song.
I just found your channel in CZcams and I found you to be incredibly professional. You explained things in a way that was easy to understand but also accurate. I especially loved your genuine reaction. Something told me that this song really touched you deep in the heart. And that’s the essence of this masterpiece. I would venture to say that despite the outcome at Eurovision, this song will transcend in a global way. We need a touch of Saudade for everything we see is being lost (🇺🇦+) in this world and we need it as well as a source of hope. Saudade is also aspirational; the wish to relive something again and again. Congrats!
Your reaction should be the 146 or 147 of those that have already been detected for this song and I can say that it is a unique reaction, as special as this little work of art by Maro and John Blanda. There are 1 beautiful studio version and a live version on Avinyó. Just do the search for Maro Saudade saudade. As for the lyrical content, uf, I leave that for others to comment. Cheers
Love everything about this. The beautiful voices, the stunning harmonies, the soothing vocals combined with dynamic rhythms. One of two songs to use clapping very effectively as percussion. (The other being Serbia.) In my top 5.
I used to dislike this and was like wtf are these clapping women doing. But after some more listens I started to really like it and sing along to the English parts. I also love how it kinda looks like a love song on the outside but is actually about her missing her dead grandpa, making me like this song even more.
Saudade is not necessarily a sad or negative word, so in this case because the song is about the loss of a loved one, to me the clapping means a way of celebrating that person's life, how wonderful it was to have that person around in our life. I think that's what the clapping is all about here, and I love it in this song btw. Yes, I'm portuguese😅😅
It's like a campfire atmosphere, gives you a vibe of being part of it too. At least to me, it's like I'm sitting there singing and mumbling the song together.
And that is how a song wins you. Unfortunately ESC does not work that way and she only gets one shot. But comments like yours are great because we know Maro´s song will stand the test of time.
If you have not already, I really recommend you to check out the studio version of this song! czcams.com/video/O3KBlzb2JUg/video.html The approach to the vocal harmonisation on it is even more insane there than it is live with only 5 vocalists. This song is a standout in my opinion and it is definitely the strongest out of the laid-back relaxing songs this year. I have it in my top 10 and I really hope it will do well. I feel like the song falls on the same eurovision subgenre as Kedvesem, so I wouldn't be surprised to see this getting the result it deserves.
Thank you, was looking forward to your reaction to this one and it didn't disappoint. MARO will bring lo-fi to ESC, it's a pleasant song that everyone can enjoy listening to.
I absolutely adore this entry. It was kind of on my down low for a bit, but once I really sat down and listened to it, it completely hit me. The opening guitar, soaked in reverb and even sounds slightly off tune somehow, instantly sets the atmosphere. It invokes some weird sort of nostalgia in me, reminds me of a time long gone. I'm still not quite sure what saudade actually means, but I'm guessing it's something along those lines? If so, the song completely and succesfully manages to communicate it's meaning to me, even without going into the lyrics. What I find amazing, is just how well the song expresses humanity in a beautiful way. The main topic and message of the song is about this feeling of "saudade", which I think is a completely human state/emotion. As you said, the vocals are completely in focus, and especially with the harmonies are amazing. They're playful all the way through, and it sounds to me like they vary the harmonies in the different choruses even. The clapping leans into this idea of humanity, even taking the spotlight from the rather digital elements. I think this combo manages to achieve not only the sense of humanity by itself, pure acapella and acoustics would've done that as well, but gives this feeling of existing as a human. surrounded by things that aren't human. The atmosphere of the song is amazing, and I think the word "solace" is a perfect descriptor of what it sounds like. Like some sort of safe space. Having said that, the way the vocals and harmonies develop throughout works well in not making the song feel as static. And I agree with the middle part being amazing. The way they change it up, it's almost like they're frolicking in what they've created. Great effect. I really think this is the best executed song this year, I cannot find any element that I find lacking or would change at all.
MARO, estou literalmente aos pulinhos! A tua canção warms and heals my heart. Obrigada MARO, obrigada pela tua sensibilidade que me deixa tão serenamente feliz. 💜💜💜
Are you sure you aren't Portuguese? Lol You are always very nice to us. But joking aside, your reviews are always great. The way you analyze the music in it's different instruments, the rhythm, harmonies. Interesting and informative, so thanks.
Hhahaha, I'm positive! I really wasn't all too nice back in 2019, but I've really been enjoying majority of the Portuguese entries since the 2017 win! :)
This song has a lot of potential. Vocally it’s amazing and I really like the arrangement overall, but for some reason I tend to forget about this song when it’s over. The only part I remember afterwards is the ”Nothing more that I can say” part which is quite sad since, as I said, the song has a lot of potential. Maybe I’ll change my mind after the live performance in Turin. We’ll see!
what I would like to point out first is the quality of this review, not because it's cleary positive but specially because all the reviews should be like this one.....Groot refers to all the main aspects and a few details that really matters and are relevant to determine the quality (or absence of) of a musical product, although I'm not an expert on this matter.....now regarding my personal opinion concerning 'Saudade, saudade'? It's too damn good for Eurovision LoL, it's as simple as that....regardless whether we like or not, one thing is for sure: in the last couple of years, Portugal has presented authentic and genuine songs which clearly deviate from the Eurovison standard and that's precisely what I appreciate most...to put it differently ESC shouldn't resume to just listening to American hip hop songs all the same.....by the way, 'saudade' is a word that has no translation in any other language, it's far beyond the idea of missing home, missing someone or something.....in my modest opinion, it's basic concept it's pretty much related to the adventure of Portuguese Discoveries, in XV and XVI centuries.
I think it's a song that can grow in oneself after hearing it several times but we all know that in ESC there is only one chance and I think this song will fail in that direction
Yes, maybe you're right, it takes time, as usual with really good music. But the most important is the music itself, sending to a bigger stage a talented new musician with a lovely and quality song that make us proud! 😉💛
Well, what can I say about this song… I’m often speechless when it comes to MARO. Her voice, her musicality, her composition greatness. The live version is just like the studio cut. I really hope Maro and Portugal do well this year.
still can't wrap my mind around the fact that o Jardim ended last
@@Daniel.............. that result was a travesty
taste (especially with O Jardim)
My No.1! I love love love this song so much! It's so chill and calming.
It is the most beautiful of songs.
Mellow and thought-provoking.
My favourite one! This is just pure emotion, mesmerizing, delightful, high quality.
Absolutely love this one, its feel is more portuguese than anything they've sent in a long time
I agree here one of my favourites too, currently in my 2nd place. Portugal is one of my favourite countries in Eurovision, always sticking to their own essence and delivering quality. Really hope this comes in a really good place just like last year 😍
I really love this song..Every element of it just sounds so great and unique..
This sounds so laid back. Beautiful without a doubt.

Nicely summarised! I agree heh

the verse in portuguese is pure magic and also... listen to the studio version intro, it's just so immersive
Welcome to my second place! This melody just grew and grew! Maro is a fantastic singer and the armonies are just genius! I love this song so much! Thank you for appreciate it!
Portugal 🇵🇹 is my number one this year!

I'm sorry to hear about this but it's very comforting to know that you found some solace in this... music can be such a beautiful thing
This is up there in my top 3 - just so so good. That middle section you mentioned is my favorite, the guitar really stands out and just adds this bright melodic touch. I’ve been desperately trying to replicate it on the guitar but it’s hard 😂
Oh I should do that too
I'm so glad you watched the live performance! I can't remember if the harmonies were in the studio version and they make the song way more inmersive. This is one of the few songs this year that went straight to my playlist, I love it.

Beautiful song. Her voice and the harmonies are hypnotic ✨️ She also has other great music out (a few with Jacob Collier) that I think would be great for you to react to
And I love as well the dueto of her with Bárbara Bandeira in ITSA ME, MARO, also on youtube.

Lyrics are about "longing" for something that you have lost. In her case a grand parent. But its written soo well that you can easely get in and make it your own. Such a great song.
Eurovision does not allow a set like Avinyo :( Maro would take Europe with that intimacy
@@petilili1976 agreed
I love that version too.🙂
I just found your channel in CZcams and I found you to be incredibly professional. Congrats!
Thank you so much! That's so nice of you to say :)
Cheers
Go Portugal 💚❤️🇵🇹
If you have not already, I really recommend you to check out the studio version of this song! czcams.com/video/O3KBlzb2JUg/video.html
The approach to the vocal harmonisation on it is even more insane there than it is live with only 5 vocalists.
Oh you're right... Kedvesem is also a massive favourite of mine!
Beautiful, Amazing.I vote in Portugal.
❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏🌍🌍🌍🌍
Thanks for your reaction love from Portugal 🇵🇹💖🙏🌎🌍🌏♥️💋🌹
Thank you, was looking forward to your reaction to this one and it didn't disappoint. MARO will bring lo-fi to ESC, it's a pleasant song that everyone can enjoy listening to.
Thank you! :)
Beautifully put, I'm loving this song too!
ITSA ME, MARO! - Calling Eric Clapton
MARO, estou literalmente aos pulinhos! A tua canção warms and heals my heart. Obrigada MARO, obrigada pela tua sensibilidade que me deixa tão serenamente feliz. 💜💜💜
Magnificent!
💞 Maro 💞
Thank you kindly, that's very nice of you to say!
sweet atmosphere this song the world needs this atmosphere music no tricks loved it
this song should reach Putin to see if he rests kkkkkkk

I think it's a song that can grow in oneself after hearing it several times but we all know that in ESC there is only one chance and I think this song will fail in that direction
Yes, maybe you're right, it takes time, as usual with really good music. But the most important is the music itself, sending to a bigger stage a talented new musician with a lovely and quality song that make us proud! 😉💛
For many, the first contact will be the 1st semi-final. If it reaches the Final, everyone who dares to listen a 2nd time will feel the spell.
"..from portugal belive it or not"? whats wrong with you?
It's a title in Portuguese, right? Slovenia and Denmark rarely send songs with Portuguese titles
❤️
