It’s really just what’s acceptable in different cultures. In American this would definitely be unacceptable, but it’s perfectly normal in other cultures. I don’t judge another culture with my standard.
I know people worries about bacteria. Apparently people’s immune system do adapt according to their environment. In fact I’ve seen a study which says Americans have higher rate of allergies, it could be that our environment is “too clean”. That also explains why Americans always get diarrhea when traveling abroad.
