  • It's hard to believe that just over a year ago, Beetlejuice the Musical had its promising comeback stopped in its tracks. Now, off the exciting news that the musical will be returning one has to ask how we got here and why it's not just an important moment for Beetlejuice the musical, but for Broadway as a whole.

      IIRC, most Broadway shows get a pro-shot made of them for the Lincoln Centre Archives. Whether or not that pro-shot is then publicly released, that's another thing.

    I need to go see it again simply to see how they rewrite the jokes to adapt to the situation. They had already started to shade Music Man in the show. So while I also hope they beat Music Man, I think it is gonna be one of those slow rollout situations. • @rae0993
      @rae0993 Před 2 lety +26

      I honestly think in the long run it will beat Music Man. That show is probably gonna flame out when Sutton and, especially, Hugh leave. I get why the Shubert org did what they did in the short run but they are gonna be kicking themselves when Music Man craps out after the pair are gone.

    • @1rockcrawford
      @1rockcrawford Před 2 lety

      Not if these sales don't improve for Beetlejuice quickly. The Music Man sells out at nearly every performance, and that is with it being almost double the cost of Hamilton tickets. Beetlejuice, on the other hand has been open for a month, and post opening weekend has dropped to under 60% seating capacity average. They seem to be greatly underestimating how many of its fans are under 35, working class, and not local to NYC. If they don't go into marketing overdrive for the summer vacation crowd fast, it's game over for them.

  • @itzdono

    We've had the technology to virtually put someone in a live setting for years now. One of the first things you could do with Android's Cardboard was to watch a concert on stage. Yet, they've rarely taken advantage of it for concerts, let alone all live events. You could easily place a 360 degree virtual camera almost anywhere without even blocking anyone's view, unlike camera jibs used for filming live performances.
    You could even have multiple angles & zoom controls that you give to the viewer to improve their viewing experience, letting them decide how they want to see a live event, almost like being there in person. You can charge more while it's live & then a reduced rerun rate, so you're earning more box office for a performance & it also opens up your customer base globally. The added revenue would cover the AEA rates that are usually too prohibitively expensive for broadcast TV, which is why you rarely see plays broadcast at all, let alone actually live.
    There's so much money that could be made if they would just let the technology breathe a little. I mean, I can start a viewing party on my streaming services. People live stream at events all the time. I can play GTA with my friend in CA at the same time as my friend in Scotland. We have characters that can interact & go to the in-game movie theater together. That game came out in 2013.
    But yet, even after 2 years of virtual meetings & living in quarantine, there still isn't a virtual theater I can go with my friends & watch a movie, play, concert, dance, stand up, sports, or anything live. No virtual place for adults to have business meetings where we don't look like XBox Live Avatars or cartoon characters. Even though that would, from a technical aspect, be one the easiest things to program. Why is that?
    Fortnite has dabbled in viewing experiences, but really, no one seems to be taking charge of this infant technology. Anyone with a modern smart phone can put it in a headset & experience VR. There is a huge untapped market out there for people with VR headsets & no access to what they want to watch. & the Vive & PSVR demographic is one that has the money to pay for first run ticket prices, even if you wanted to charge full price. We're just waiting for someone to turn on the camera & take our money. Where's the VR? It's like someone invented the TV & then forgot to broadcast anything.

    “Dead Mom” is probably my favorite musical theater song right now, no joke. Sophia’s vocals are incredible - they’re filled with so much passion. It’s interesting because there is this dark humor in the fact that Lydia refers to her mom as “Dead Mom,” but it also doesn’t stray away from the fact that she is in mourning and she’s looking for help in the last place she can think to find it. It’s wonderful.

    Hi there, I really love your channel, and I'm overjoyed that Beetlejuice is getting another chance. I appreciate what you're doing SO much, to bring musical theatre to new eyes, and to bring specific shows to light that might have otherwise gone under certain peoples' (my) radar. So I hope it doesn't sound complainy when I say I was sort of surprised by, I don't know, a "tone" in this video that I hadn't picked up on before.
    I guess now that I look back on the specific shows featured on your past videos, maybe the hints were already there... but it almost sounds like personally you're anti classic Broadway? And of course hey, your channel, your opinions! That's the way it works. I just hope there can be an appreciation among hardcore musical theatre fans of both the old and the new. Not just where we're going, but how we got here.
    I understand dissatisfaction with cold corporate commerce shutting down beloved shows for other ostensibly more "commercially viable" shows, believe me I do (still reeling over the relatively small audience Great Comet achieved - and I know there were other factors at work there). But to me it doesn't feel good to pit Beetlejuice against The Music Man so directly, because we literally would not have one without the other. Anyway, it's entirely possible I'm your only fan that feels this way, just wanted to put it out there and see what you thought. Maybe a video on this topic could be an idea someday! I truly appreciate what you do and hope you'll keep doing it, even when classic Broadway addicts like me get cranky. Looking forward to my birthday Broadway trip next month, and seeing Hadestown specifically based on what I learned from this channel.

    I'm so excited it's getting another chance. This was the first show in years that I'd actually planned to save up for and try to see, in part due to the stunning amount of work that went into the sets and development. The very good songs and cast also helped. It was an ugly shock to learn it had been canned in favor of "The Music Man."
    We can only hope that Hugh Jackman, killer of musicals, can be kept at bay long enough.
    PS: It is a joke I know Huge Axeman is very popular. I'm just being petty.

    I was in NYC on Oct 20th and shocked to see the original Times Square billboards were still there. I thought it was for the new production. Imagine my surprise, and the triple take that came with it, when I realized it was for the original WG show! I was lucky enough to see it in Jan 2020 and thought it was it was absolutely amazing. Here's to hoping the pro-shot is filmed ASAP. 💜💜💜

    Being a huge Beetlejuice fan (movie and the 90’s nick cartoon) I went and saw this at the winter garden and I absolutely had a blast, It was so much fun! I was sad to hear it was closing. I’m glad others will be able to see it because I really do feel like it was a worthwhile theater experience. Beetlejuice beetlejuice beetlejuice!

    as stoked as I am for the possibility of a pro-shot no matter what, I really hope there's more footage of the show from the Winter Garden. since stage size was such a concern after the eviction announcement, I'm super curious as to how the spectacle of the show will be scaled for a different stage. I know there's some decent boots and many of the effects were filmed for promos but man, just a view straight on of the stage would be so cool to have, even just for comparison.

    I loved Beetlejuice, and am thrilled with it coming back. I will definitely be getting tickets to see it. However, Broadway is having enough problems without pitting one show against each other, and hoping for failure. The Music Man's big draw is the 2 big name people they have starring in it. Recasting would probably harm it. Two very different shows, 2 very different crowds, they can both succeed without being happy only if one fails. Sorry, being supportive of one show is not exclusive of all other shows. Hundreds of people work on each show, and you're hoping all these people lose their jobs, after not working for 18 months. Not cool.

      @TigerLuvr Před 2 lety +4

      I totally understand your point, but I don’t think that’s what he was saying here. My impression was more that he’s rooting for Beetlejuice to outperform Music Man in sales, not that Music Man should fail (which is incredibly unlikely anyways). Beetlejuice is the underdog here so it’d be very satisfying

    I dropped this info on tiktok a month or so ago and no one believed me! Also it is 100% being filmed for HBOMax. The producers know that this show will make crazy money when community theatres and high schools can do it and it's easier for those theatres to do shows that have pro-shots (ala Shrek and ala how Spongebob will be).

    I find it interesting that you gave a shout out to the composer, the book writers, the coreographer and the director, but forgot to mention the person who did the orchestrations, contributed the incidental music and actually conducts the show every night, and who's the one fundamental figure who connects the acting with the live underlying music in real time: Kris Kukul. Without him, there would be no Beetlejuice, the MUSICAL, the MUSICAL, the MUSICAL... because without the music part, this would just be a theater play. Let's give a little more love to the people who actually help make the magic happen, just as much as the celebrated actors on stage, albeit in a less glamorously visible way.
