Larry made all of his teammates look good And all of his opponents look bad Definitely top 5All time
I don't like the whole "Bird wasn't athletic" thing, either. He was extremely athletic; he just didn't have the vertical that Jordan or Wilkins had. Bird had a very quick first step, and he was athletic enough to hit shots over other players and get steals that left the opposing team in tatters. He was plenty athletic, he just didn't have that great vertical.
He is 6'9
6-10
I agree, he was extremely athletic. His body control was unbelievable
that injury hampered his athleticism, but he was still deadly
That's a good point. He didn't have the "obvious" athleticism like a huge vertical or blazing straight-line speed. But as others have noted, his first step was unreal, and he was freakishly coordinated - he could put every bit of his body exactly where it needed to be to gain the advantage. It didn't matter how quick he was when he could always put his body between the defender and the ball.
On top of everything else, Larry played in a PHYSICAL league. Stars of today would be brought to tears by a series against the Bad Boy Pistons. The league did not protect Bird, Magic, Jordan, they took hard fouls and still did what ever they wanted.
Exactly!!! They got the crap beat out of them and rubbed a little dirt on it and got back in the game. They played with broke fingers, broke feet, dislocated kneecaps, sprained everything, concussions, stitches, broke ribs, broke noses, eyes swelled shut, with fevers, chills, the flu, pneumonia. They just kept going. They didn't stop. Today a hang nail and hurt feelings and they stop playing to cry about it.
LeBron couldn't handle the physical play from that era. He wouldn't survive a trip down the lane in Detroit. He'd get racked up by Bill Laimbeer and Rick MaHorn and be rolled out on a stretcher.
Not to mention, it was FUN watching Bird play back in the day - sit down and watch one of his games with 10 or more assists or 30 or more points (there's plenty to choose from) and you will be entertained by his ability and athleticism.
I wasn't a Bird or Boston fan but he is 1 of the top 5 players to ever play. He made his teammates 5x's better than what they actually were. Hard work pays off, dreams come true, bad times don't last but bad guys do. God bless.
Should check out Larry Bird greatest passer of all time video re-edit. AMAZING
Larry Legend Bird was athletic. He just wasn't a bodybuilder. He was a ballplayer. That was his focus. Playing basketball to the best of his ability. And he did. To know he was taking the court scared the other team. They knew he was going to run their butts off all night long. If they won, they earned it. Larry had injury after injury and kept playing. He played when the rules were tougher and no one cared about feelings. It was the game. It was all. Larry was strategic as all hell. He had his games played 12 different ways in his mind before he hit the court. He knew the rules, the moves, the weaknesses of every single player and team. And this was all before the internet. Let that sink in. He went over stats, games, rewatching games. Playing basketball was his job and he dominated. He will always be my favorite player. Always. No one had his skill, arrogance, ego, loyalty, humor, ethic and just plain stubbornness. You need all of those things to survive the NBA. Not everyone can be at that level. Very few can.
11:50 Some backstory for context. Bird originally was a freshman at Indiana and in part left for Indiana State because Kent Benson, who was the star center tried to bully Bird. After that Bird HATED Benson and took special delight in beating him badly.
Lebron fans make a big fuss at the time he decided to get the ball when the play was called different, but Bird was the one who started it
Not only he fractured his cheek and came back in the game, but he came back in the game and lit it up !! Larry Bird would average a triple double in 2024 in his sleep you don’t see toughness like that anymore. He was two steps ahead of everyone else ! His basketball IQ was ridiculous ! And I don’t know why people think he wasn’t athletic. Just watch the tape you let me know !
no he wouldn't have sports have gotten soft ... touch someone is a foul now ... imagine if Lebron faced Jordan LMAO was much more to get away with back then
Bird had a back issue as well
Wasn't it more to the end of his career that it was acting up.
I would love to have seen what his career could have been, if he didn't hurt his back, working on his mom's driveway. Just the fact that he managed to still play at all after that, amazes me. Players these days sit out for a break, or claim being hurt, if they even think of being injured. This guy and many like him back then, would have to be bound to the bench, to not try to get back on the floor. For the themselves, and the fans who paid to see their idols play.
We didn’t even know what concussions was back then
Great video guys
Larry has 3 (champjonships)matching Lebron in a career that was 1/3 short of other Just something to think about.
He is who M.J. learned from what work it takes in practice and fitness necessary to become a champion.
As a young teen it was a true privilege to watch Bird.I idolized him and he was the reason I loved to watch and play. Now,at 55, I blame him for all the nagging injuries I still feel every day.lol
I'm not a doctor but I can tell you that head bouncing was a concussion. I think it was said somewhere that he may have lost consciousness momentarily but I forget the source.
He fractured his orbital and cheek bone
@@jayfwedefinitely concussion as I remember after game interview where Larry said he was seeing 3 baskets! In a different game where his nose got broke he said he saw 2 baskets & had to pick 1.
Also heard he was unconscious for several seconds.
I’m so glad these guys see it!
I am so puzzled when everyone says Larry was not athletic.
Larry is extremely athletic.
He beats guys with his athleticism. There are hours of footage of him scoring with athletic moves. Also, his body control is highest level and his hand/eye coordination is highest level.
Skip the commercial!!!
I think the game in the 80s and the 90s what's much better more exciting. Today's game is weak.
Good video!
If they’re having a mediocre game, don’t poke the bear, or in this case…don’t poke the Bird!
He was described as "slow" but he really flew down the court on the break and I never remember anyone ever catching him from behind for a block, something you see all the time these days. It's kind of hard to average 10 bounds a game if you can't "jump".
I got to watch Bird as a kid/teen. All I can say is he was clutch and money in the bank.
Have you noticed how Joker shoots, when he jump shoot he fire a ball behind his head, its almost impossible to block that shoot. Thats what coaches teach children how to shoot when they are very young, only way to block that shoot is from behind the player
You know you can skip past an in-video ad? And also, you can edit out the part with you watching an ad and/or skipping it?
Tough to see in the videos but he is a big dude, legit 6'9 and wide so back in the day when low post play was an essential part of the game he could back smaller guys down and shoot over, bigger guys he could take them further out because he was such a great shooter but he was one of the best rebounders in the game as well.
I was lucky enough to watch him and Jordan and many others greats play live on tv. The white hick from french lick. To me Bird and Jordan and the goats of all time.
GOAT Hoosier born and bread!
I love the story when Bird said to somebody, probably a Rookie, I feel like 43 tonight.... b4 the game started.. and got 43.. who does that?
America Is So Lucky This little "Yes" Man did Not Get On The Supreme Court !
Larry Bird is the reason I became a Celtics fan and I live in Missouri. I watched Larry play from his first game until his last game. Larry was dangerous from anywhere on the court, even from behind the backboard. Larry did things routinely that other players could only dream of doing or have nightmares about. I loved watching him and Magic play, they fed off each other and it only made them better. Larry and Magic became fierce friends off the court and are still friends to this day. He told Magic that, "there will be another Larry Bird one day, and Magic responded, "Larry there will never, ever, EVER be another Larry Bird. I love you, respect you and admire you".
I once heard someone say that on the court Larry wasn’t just playing basketball! He was playing chess, checkers, football, soccer, and volleyball all at once! Great job guys.❤
Sucks at the end of his time Birds back was really bad but still fought through it. Just like when Jordan was sick with the flu or food poising and still played. That's how respect is made. Hard work and putting your sickness or injury last and the game first. The 1992 Dream team is the best team formed out of random NBA players.
If I had to build the perfect basketball player using the best skills and abilities of all the greats, I honestly think I'd take Bird for everything except raw athleticism (LeBron or Dominique), on-ball defense (Payton, Russell, or Garnet), and injury-free longevity (Parrish). I could be convinced to go with Kyrie for ball handling - not that Bird was lacking, but because Kyrie's handle is so damn fun to watch.
Bird is the all-time great Jordans behind him because bird was a better shooter
Bird was great, no doubt! But even more so, he made his teammates great as well. The thing that always amazed me was the way he could make passes that nobody on the other team except that guys like McHale, or Parrish, or D.J., or Ainge, or Walton could catch. Larry was great, but more he was able to be the team to ultimate his team at crunch time.
Every Boston game was fun back then. Bird would always do something I had never seen before at least once per game.
one thing none of them mention, and is perhaps the most important, larry bird never ever supported the use of muslim Uyghur slaves to make his shoes like lechina has
Larry's last years, his back was so bad he'd have to lay down on his stomach in the aisle of the plane, and on the sideline during Celtics & Dream Team games....
The doctor told him he was done, and turned to do something, or talk to someone, and Larry snuck out back onto the court. Lol!
In x-ray world a fractured cheek is a type of orbital fracture. It’s been said that Larry was knocked out for several seconds. Also in after game interviews Larry said he saw 3 baskets but just shot at middle one. So he definitely was concussed.
Much earlier in his career either it was a broken nose or he got Westbrooked with big dent in his jaw. That game he saw only 2 baskets and had to pick the real one. Larry shot like 68% in that game. Dude was stupid tough.
Larry was athletic in hand eye coordination and had good footwork. Plus before injuries really slowed him Bird had deadly 1st step that made his jab step fake effective
Larry Legend is the greatest all around BB player to ever walk the earth.
I liked Walton's comment about Bird. He wanted to shoot the ball when the game is on the line. That is also why Jordan is mentioned as the goat. Being an Ohio boy, I love LeBron. But to me he was too unselfish for the talent he had. Some people dismiss Magic that didn't see him play. But he saved the day and played center when Jabar got injured. Finally, Wilt Chamberlain was the greatest center who ever played. This rounds out my top 5 and if you look up the late great Kobe Bryant. This too was his top 5. Which shows his great humility. Cause he certainly would be in my top 5 were it not for Jordan. Which Dr J laid the blueprint for! Behind LeBron as my 4 man would be Bill Russell. For his smarts and defense alone.
Back in the day all sports had troopers.. they played through the injuries and got a heck of a lot less pay.. now days... divas.. When you talk about the GOAT's of any sport I'm going with the ones back in the day that played no matter what. They played with heart and were loyal to a franchise.. now it's all about the money (all sports) and they can't play with a dang stubbed finger. They couldn't play against the big boys back then. All sports.
who else can say their name was added to magic an djordan. it was bird vs magic 1st then it was bird vs jordan
Help out and center that photo it should be at eye level, and in the middle of the couch, show me the slide the couch, or slide the painting
People act like Wilt Chamberlain didn't exist.
Wheres the reaction to Larry Dominating The 3 Point Contest 3 times!
Larry the GOAT
A little small screen of the content with a full screen of the reactors tells you all you need to know about this channel is about you not the content.
jordan bird and magic top 3 all time goats my opinion 🐐
Bird and Jokic are a lot more alike than we thought. Except the Serb lets *his* unathleticism do the talking. Seeing Wilkins in this video made me happy.
Bird is the best PF in NBA history.
When I was young Bird was the only thing I watched ball for. I lived in a all black community as a short white kid in "D" city. You can imagine why I looked up to him. Bird was the greatest to date. Just sayin dudes. God pays no attention to color and race when he hands out talent fellas.
today's basketball is hand soccer
Fun Fact: Michael Jordan (the GOAT to most people) is 0-fer against Larry Bird in the playoffs.
Bird was the best NBA player ever that could not jump over a credit card
If you really want to know how good Larry really was. Ask his peers😮 enough said
Do you think if LeBron was built like Bird and was unathletic as Bird, that he would even be close to as great as Bird? remember back than there no rest days.
Bird, Luka, and Nikola Have better half-court games
Bird top 3 to me but definitely top 5 all time he'd destroy today's European style NBA of weakness
There isn't one great from multiple eras that doesn't think Bird was ridiculous. He beat EVERY single superstar of his era. LB is basketball. You disrespect him and you disrespect the game. There's a few goats but only one Legend.
Bird knew where every teammate was ... Watching him play was like watching a guy who trained with the Harlem Globe Trotters ... Y'all are great looking guys, but videos like this need to show less you and more content ... I don't mean this disrespectfully, I just love watching Larry! ❤
Bird was much more loyal to his team and city....
Not athletic... hmmm. 4 years in NCAA, NBA all-time great. Not athletic. No, not athletic is us out here
I just wish Larry Bird happened to be black, lol. Then there would be absolutely, positively, NO QUESTION he was the best player ever.
Lebron was not even close to Jordan as the GOAT. I wouldnt put Lebron in the top 5.
Question, would the '84 Celtics be able to play by todays rules be able to play in the NBA today or be baned because of all todays teams they would destroy?
They would absolutely annihilate today's teams, but it would take them a moment to get used to the pansy-a$$ed no-touch garbage.
I think they would force the nba to change rules again because they would slow it down and put stars in foul trouble trying to stop there two man games
Jordan is the best plain and simple when he dies everybody's going to be saying he's the greatest so you might as well just do it while he's alive
Michael Jordan leads NBA history in regular season average, he was first team all-defense 9 times and won a defensive POY, he's tied for the most MVPs, He's tied for second in Rings won by players not from the late 50s, 60s Celtics. Bird wasn't better than everyone. Bird did win three MVPs in a row, but I believe the only reason Michael didn't do that is Jordan Fatigue, and Jordan had 2 more MVPs total.
You might want to listen to what Jordan says about Bird before you make your assessment. He never beat Bird in the playoffs!
2:54 is when the video actually starts everyone
Lebron a cancer to any team and a joke. Bird would run circle around him and trash talk him that would make Lebron cry
