    I don't like the whole "Bird wasn't athletic" thing, either. He was extremely athletic; he just didn't have the vertical that Jordan or Wilkins had. Bird had a very quick first step, and he was athletic enough to hit shots over other players and get steals that left the opposing team in tatters. He was plenty athletic, he just didn't have that great vertical.

    • @bduval9253
      @bduval9253 Před 3 dny

      That's a good point. He didn't have the "obvious" athleticism like a huge vertical or blazing straight-line speed. But as others have noted, his first step was unreal, and he was freakishly coordinated - he could put every bit of his body exactly where it needed to be to gain the advantage. It didn't matter how quick he was when he could always put his body between the defender and the ball.

    On top of everything else, Larry played in a PHYSICAL league. Stars of today would be brought to tears by a series against the Bad Boy Pistons. The league did not protect Bird, Magic, Jordan, they took hard fouls and still did what ever they wanted.

    • @countrygirl7402
      @countrygirl7402 Před 15 dny +4

      Exactly!!! They got the crap beat out of them and rubbed a little dirt on it and got back in the game. They played with broke fingers, broke feet, dislocated kneecaps, sprained everything, concussions, stitches, broke ribs, broke noses, eyes swelled shut, with fevers, chills, the flu, pneumonia. They just kept going. They didn't stop. Today a hang nail and hurt feelings and they stop playing to cry about it.

      LeBron couldn't handle the physical play from that era. He wouldn't survive a trip down the lane in Detroit. He'd get racked up by Bill Laimbeer and Rick MaHorn and be rolled out on a stretcher.

    Not to mention, it was FUN watching Bird play back in the day - sit down and watch one of his games with 10 or more assists or 30 or more points (there's plenty to choose from) and you will be entertained by his ability and athleticism.

    I wasn't a Bird or Boston fan but he is 1 of the top 5 players to ever play. He made his teammates 5x's better than what they actually were. Hard work pays off, dreams come true, bad times don't last but bad guys do. God bless.

    Larry Legend Bird was athletic. He just wasn't a bodybuilder. He was a ballplayer. That was his focus. Playing basketball to the best of his ability. And he did. To know he was taking the court scared the other team. They knew he was going to run their butts off all night long. If they won, they earned it. Larry had injury after injury and kept playing. He played when the rules were tougher and no one cared about feelings. It was the game. It was all. Larry was strategic as all hell. He had his games played 12 different ways in his mind before he hit the court. He knew the rules, the moves, the weaknesses of every single player and team. And this was all before the internet. Let that sink in. He went over stats, games, rewatching games. Playing basketball was his job and he dominated. He will always be my favorite player. Always. No one had his skill, arrogance, ego, loyalty, humor, ethic and just plain stubbornness. You need all of those things to survive the NBA. Not everyone can be at that level. Very few can.

    11:50 Some backstory for context. Bird originally was a freshman at Indiana and in part left for Indiana State because Kent Benson, who was the star center tried to bully Bird. After that Bird HATED Benson and took special delight in beating him badly.

Larry Bird would average a triple double in 2024 in his sleep you don’t see toughness like that anymore. He was two steps ahead of everyone else ! His basketball IQ was ridiculous ! And I don’t know why people think he wasn’t athletic. Just watch the tape you let me know !

    I would love to have seen what his career could have been, if he didn't hurt his back, working on his mom's driveway. Just the fact that he managed to still play at all after that, amazes me. Players these days sit out for a break, or claim being hurt, if they even think of being injured. This guy and many like him back then, would have to be bound to the bench, to not try to get back on the floor. For the themselves, and the fans who paid to see their idols play.

    Larry Bird is the reason I became a Celtics fan and I live in Missouri. I watched Larry play from his first game until his last game. Larry was dangerous from anywhere on the court, even from behind the backboard. Larry did things routinely that other players could only dream of doing or have nightmares about. I loved watching him and Magic play, they fed off each other and it only made them better. Larry and Magic became fierce friends off the court and are still friends to this day. He told Magic that, "there will be another Larry Bird one day, and Magic responded, "Larry there will never, ever, EVER be another Larry Bird. I love you, respect you and admire you".

    @IndianaBones Před 11 dny

    Sucks at the end of his time Birds back was really bad but still fought through it. Just like when Jordan was sick with the flu or food poising and still played. That's how respect is made. Hard work and putting your sickness or injury last and the game first. The 1992 Dream team is the best team formed out of random NBA players.

  • @bduval9253
    @bduval9253 Před 3 dny

    If I had to build the perfect basketball player using the best skills and abilities of all the greats, I honestly think I'd take Bird for everything except raw athleticism (LeBron or Dominique), on-ball defense (Payton, Russell, or Garnet), and injury-free longevity (Parrish). I could be convinced to go with Kyrie for ball handling - not that Bird was lacking, but because Kyrie's handle is so damn fun to watch.

    Bird was great, no doubt! But even more so, he made his teammates great as well. The thing that always amazed me was the way he could make passes that nobody on the other team except that guys like McHale, or Parrish, or D.J., or Ainge, or Walton could catch. Larry was great, but more he was able to be the team to ultimate his team at crunch time.

    In x-ray world a fractured cheek is a type of orbital fracture. It’s been said that Larry was knocked out for several seconds. Also in after game interviews Larry said he saw 3 baskets but just shot at middle one. So he definitely was concussed.
    Much earlier in his career either it was a broken nose or he got Westbrooked with big dent in his jaw. That game he saw only 2 baskets and had to pick the real one. Larry shot like 68% in that game. Dude was stupid tough.
    Larry was athletic in hand eye coordination and had good footwork. Plus before injuries really slowed him Bird had deadly 1st step that made his jab step fake effective

    I liked Walton's comment about Bird. He wanted to shoot the ball when the game is on the line. That is also why Jordan is mentioned as the goat. Being an Ohio boy, I love LeBron. But to me he was too unselfish for the talent he had. Some people dismiss Magic that didn't see him play. But he saved the day and played center when Jabar got injured. Finally, Wilt Chamberlain was the greatest center who ever played. This rounds out my top 5 and if you look up the late great Kobe Bryant. This too was his top 5. Which shows his great humility. Cause he certainly would be in my top 5 were it not for Jordan. Which Dr J laid the blueprint for! Behind LeBron as my 4 man would be Bill Russell. For his smarts and defense alone.

When you talk about the GOAT's of any sport I'm going with the ones back in the day that played no matter what. They played with heart and were loyal to a franchise.. now it's all about the money (all sports) and they can't play with a dang stubbed finger. They couldn't play against the big boys back then.
