I used to go off-roading and shooting a lot back in the 80's all over that area, with some military buddies, and occasionally we'd come across something that seemed off for an area, never any bodies, but did see a dirt landing strip with a makeshift wind sock out in the middle of nowhere one time, and what looked like a satanic worship area with markings and where a large fire had been burned another time. Adelanto has grown so much since then, I've seen on google maps, so no telling who and what has spread out to El Mirage area, even more than what was going on back then. Probably not a place to be alone and definitely unarmed anymore, especially after dark. imho

A lot of strange things happen in the desert. I wouldn’t go out there. It’s a scary place.
Yeah, out in that area, it has changed a lot over the years. It's become very dangerous out there. There are several illegal marijuana grow sites in the area and just south of that location. I know that area really well. It's not unusual to hear gun shots out there also as there are a couple of private shooting ranges. Going by the information that news outlets have given, I have a pretty good idea where this crime happened. And if I'm right, that tells me that whoever did this knows that area and that location where the shooting took place. Anybody living out there hearing any shooting could have just thought of that the gun fire was coming from one of the private shooting ranges.

Perhaps a group of migrants whose families did not pay up… as a result, this happened. I mean 5 people shot at and bunched up in one car while another was found a few hundred feet away… seems like one tried to get away but failed.

Knowing the area and possible crime location, my first thought is a Cartel hit. Maybe they needed to send a message to another grow operation. I'm pretty sure that the majority of the grow operations out there are not legal. When I was last out there, there were easily a dozen of them around the area. Going off the information that some of the news outlets have indicated where the crime scene is, tells me that the person or persons know this area well enough, to know how to get in and out of there un-noticed, not raise any suspicions, and knowing that hearing gun fire wouldn't be a second thought by anybody living out in that area as there are two private shooting ranges in the area.
Seeing that the drivers side window had a couple of bullet holes in it indicates that someone knew enough that if they took out the driver, the rest were sitting ducks. Looking at the evidence field, this crime was done by more than one person. If by chance it was done by one person, that person was using an automatic weapon. Because a hand gun or AR is not going to leave an evidence field of shell casings that large. And if by the slim chance that this was done by a single shooter and they took out the driver first, the automatic fight or flight response by the other people would normally be to get out and run. And more than likely those people will run in different directions. So to have a single shooter standing there trying to pick off four or five people running in different directions is highly unlikely. The next question is what connection does the driver of the second vehicle have with the people in the dark SUV. Sadly, I think the victims were there to meet someone and once there, there were more people there than they expected or who showed up shortly afterwards, the assailants know the area, know the crime location well enough to know how to get out of the area quickly enough without drawing attention to themselves even after firing off 20 or 30 rounds.
All very good observations. The only thing I’d argue is the fact that the assailant(s) HAD to know the area. It could very well be that the victims knew the area and chose that location.
