  • This video is part 1 of a month long studio vlog to prepare for Malmö city run Garden Show. The challenge was to create as many ceramics as I could in just one month and design a new garden collection to go along with it since this would be the biggest market I'd ever participated in.
As always, it's a chatty creative vlog with lots of throwing, sculpting and painting :)

    -- About --
I am an Asian-American-Swedish artist living in the beautiful city of Malmö, Sweden. My art is inspired by my love of animals and my style is a combination of the cultures I have been a part of - a bit of American quirk, a pinch of Eastern influence and a dash of Scandinavian design. Follow me on my journey as I grow my small art business while I grow as an independent artist.

I love the color of these pieces. Beautiful. I enjoy seeing your process. So nice to see you have your work in a shop. My niece is a ceramic tile artist, and I had visited the New Jersey shore and found her pieces in a shop on the boardwalk. Very exciting.

Thank you so much for this awesome video. I love to see what it's like behind the scenes making pottery and everything that is involved with getting ready for an online sale or a market. Your tips are really appreciated. Thank you for being so open and helpful and kind. I hope that the market was fantastic. Your work is so beautiful. :)

Thank you. I, personally, like to hear about the whole body experience. Exercise is almost required as a potter, don’t you think? Your pieces are amazingly, adorable. 🌵🌵🌵 Tucson, AZ

You may want to try coating the tool in a little cornstarch. I take my stamp and dip it in cornstarch every once in a while to prevent clay buildup in the tiny details. Not sure if this could work on the larger scale?

I was elated when I busted through my block while learning how to spin. Now Im a master thread spinner and ready to make my first linen shirt. Working on making a quantity of thread.

I tap center more from 2 oclock instead of 4, the wheel a little faster, and constant little taps with the same force and distance, it quickly just centers itself. You could always try trimming on a chuck too, there's a learning curve but definitely speeds things up not having to wad to keep the pot in place, and you get a little support for the bottom too so less likely it gets concave. But hey, as you said, time! I wonder if wetting the diamond tool would help at all, never used one so no idea, I hate handles. Congrats on the new stockist and thanks for sharing your studio.

Thanks for the tip about tap centering! I will need to give that a try. Tbh i haven't given the diamond core extruder another chance since this but maybe it's time again

Best hand cream for potters hands is made by The Body Shop, its called Hemp hand cream, its amazing, puts the moisture straight back in. Its a UK company but think you can buy it world wide xx

Actually I've found what works for me! I use just basic Vaseline now and it's been working better than any moisturizers I've found

It's so much harder to film the event and make it informative at the same time! So I'd love to do a reflection and tips video

I think, that in order to get better handles with cutter, is to get much more firm clay. I hate pulling handles too, but I do more of slipcasting, so slipcasting handles is a treat actually. Maybe you should try it too? The big plus of slipcasting handles is the consistency.
By the way, if it's not a secret, is craft shows/state fairs expensive in Sweden? I am starting to go to fairs myself, locally at first:) But it would be fun to travel abroad for such event

    • @birdietam
      @birdietam  Před 2 lety +1

I'd love to slip cast handles - I've seen such beautiful designs done with slip casting! I'm going to give it a go in autumn when I'm back from holiday
I'm not sure how much craft shows are in other places since I've only done them here, but I've seen them for anything between $40-150/ day depending on the event

@@birdietam oh so craft show prices are simmilar to my country's:) I'm from Lithuania, so not so far from you:))
Slipcasting is amazing. I like more clean lines in my minimalist style mugs, so I can achieve that easily and make more square shaped handles. The mold making is the only time consuming part.

I wish I could quit my job and do this full time but my insurance is a little more than 2k a month without a job due to health issues :( I really want to be an art instructor. My goal would be to teach ceramics!

Honestly, I don't think I'd be able to do this full time if I didn't live in Sweden. I hope you get to achieve your dream or becoming an art teacher one day!
