  • Footage from a local movie theater in New York City from the first week of September 1985.
Shots of people at the box office, buying tickets, posters, etc...
Sorry all, no "Back to the Future" or "The Goonies" but still some iconic titles playing here include:
    National Lampoon's European Vacation
    Weird Science
    Real Genius
    Cocoon
    Rambo: First Blood Part II
    Gremlins
The Gremlins re-release and Rambo II seem to be the hot ticket in this fuzzy little video.
This one last around 4 minutes or so.

I actually miss coming up to a theater and seeing the lines at the box office. Feeling the hype and energy. Now I go to my local theater, which sits in this really nice mall-plaza round, but it's just void and liminal. The box office is abandoned, because everyone just scans their debit card at a kiosk, or order online. I think you have to go to the customer service desk to get a physical ticket.
Just one of those "sign of the times" type things. Conveniences at the expense of culture. Same thing with Blockbuster. Who doesn't miss the experience of wandering the isles, buying microwave popcorn and candy, and that fragrance of VHS abundance?

I despise smart phone and refuse to ever have one myself. The world was a much better place before smart phones alone. Before Netflix and all that crap when there was more excitement about going to see a film at the cinema or going to the movie store with your friends on a Friday night. Now everything is instant... no waiting, but also no real excitement or ceremonial build-up, if that makes sense..

I was 3 years old in 1985. All I can remember about that time is playing with my HE-MAN toys and running around the house with my HE-MAN underwear. At the same time my auntie with a Geri curl telling me to sit my boo-boo down. Lol. Can’t really remember too much to say it was a good time.

Exactly how are local mall theatres looked with these familiar movie posters of childhood. It was such a magical feeling of being a child then going to the movies. Also, speaking of Rambo, a sibling of mine who was a Rambo fan, bought the Rambo knife at our local mall or local Kmart during one of Friday evening family outings going shopping and eating dinner out. Sibling hung knife in his bedroom closet as decor. Sibling also had a toy Rambo machine gun hanging toy gun for decor along side wall in his closet to by his personal desk there.

It was the rerelease poster from December of 84, but back then certain movies (at certain theaters) would stick around for a while. Gremlins had kid appeal so that's why it stuck around... and its why I was able to see it a total of 13 times before it hit video.

September, 1985. Sly Stallone is the biggest movie star on the planet right now. I've already seen Rambo 2, but I'm rewatching it because I wanna psych myself up for Rocky 4 in about two months.
I wanna be Rocky. I wanna be Rambo. Fortunately for me, it's 1985 and there's a booming industry for turning men into glistening piles of meat. I'm gonna watch Rambo, then lock those images in my mind as I make my way to the gym immediately after.
