    I still remember the day I finished reading Kafka on the shore.. I actually couldn't read any other book for next 3 days. A weird sort of murky hangover it was 😂.. yet I loved that feeling. Murakami's surreal world. 🖤

      @feli435 Před 3 lety +1

      Was the same for me. Murakami is just someone else... Kafka on the shore is an absolute masterpiece.

      post murakami depression is real, after reading kafka i cant read other books for 2 weeks, i tried, i just cant. other books(what i have) seem dull compare to murakami

      I know writing is one of the most creative forms of art. One needs to dive deep into the ocean of thoughts and imagination... but I really want to know how he manages to create such a world so slowly; the transition from real world to his surreal world is so smooth. I wish even in writing, there were "behind the scenes" sort of things 😂 just the way it is so common in filmmaking.. That could be the only way to understand how he creates such a world most of the times.😄

    I mean obviously Japanese literature and murakami are iconic in magical realism but as a genre it is quintessentially a latin american genre, I think it's important to mention

    This booktube looks a lark. Think I might give it ago. Thanks for the inspiration (& loved your take on magic realism/weird; this is a genre I also love).

    My favourite magical realism books:
    ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (also my all-time favourite book 😅)
    MIDNIGHT'S CHILDREN by Salman Rushdie
    THE WIND UP BIRD CHRONICLE by Haruki Murakami

      I really need to try one hundred years of solitude and retry midnights children I feel like they're such staples of the genre!

    Ahh love to see Kafka in this list! I bought it cause it was one of the ones they had in the edition I like, but Ive only read Windup Bird, Wind Pinball, and Hard-Boiled Wonderland, and felt like I might have read the weirdest ones (bird and wonderland I mean then) except for a few I couldn't get my hands on as easily. Hearing you talk about Kafka makes me much more excited about it haha. Hoping for a lot of wells! 😂

    I love Murakami, but I need to start diving into his backlist (I started reading him from 1Q84 onwards)
    You really can't discuss I'm Thinking of Ending Things without spoiling it!

    Loved this video! I recently read like Water For chocolate which I'm pretty sure has some magical realism elements and absolutely adored it. The food description and how it merged with the story made me dream. I'm not sure you would like it however, and it has this annoying love at first sight and I forget all good sense for the man I love trope. I have been meaning to read the grey house by mariam petrosyan, I think it could be considered as wierd. Do you know of it?

    I just subbed to your channel and magical realism is one of my fav genres so I’ll def be checking them out! Have you read the 7 deaths of Evelyn hardcastle? It’s a groundhogs day type of book where the main character has to solve a murder by the end of the night or the day starts over, each day the wake up as a different person, I feel like from this limited vid you’d probably like it. Other favs of mine are the unseen world (adult contemporary with some light sci fi realism), house of leaves (super popular so you’ve prob already read, horror/weird realism), and the Gone World which might be straight sci-fi, not sure, but its about preventing the end of the world through time travel with a murder mystery plot as well, one of my fav books of all time.

    I just ordered The Vegetarian and a different book by Yoko Ogawa (The Housekeeper and the Professor) yesterday. Cannot wait for them to get here. And The Memory Police sounds so good, too. Will add that to my to-read list!
    When it comes to weired/magical realism, I cannot recommend Andrew Kaufman enough. My favourite of his is The Waterproof Bible. I hope you will check it out ^^

    I know you are not always a fan of short story collections, but I just found out that Samanta Schweblin has one that was translated to english in 2019 called Mouthful of Birds. I haven't read it yet, but it sounded just as weird and interesting as Fever Dream.
