  • Hello everyone, My name is Ram. In this video, I share my Coding Interview preparation for my Amazon Software Development Engineer Interview.
I am a Computer Science graduate, and I had a dream to work for Big Tech companies like Amazon, Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Apple, and in 2019 I got a chance to get into one of these giants which is Amazon.
I had around 40 days to prepare for this Interview starting from initial email to the onsite Interview. In this video, I shared how I prepared during this 40 days.
    In the first week
    - I gathered some notes on basic data structures like Lists, Stacks, Queues, Hash Tables, Trees and Graphs
    - Then I recollected all searching algorithms like Breadth First Search (BFS), and Depth First Search (DFS), Linear Search and Binary Search.
    - I prepared notes on Sorting techniques like Quick Sort, Insertion Sort, Merge Sort.
    - Understood the Coding techniques of Divide and Conquer, Dynamic Programming, Bit Manipulation.
    - Understood how to calculate time complexity for various algorithms.
After that I used to solve problems from Coding platforms like
    www.topcoder.com/
    www.codechef.com/
And I used to solve problems from the book "Cracking the Coding Interview" by Gayle Laakman McDowell.
I felt that this book particularly helped in cracking my coding Interview. You can find the book using the following Amazon.com link
    www.amazon.com/Cracking-Codin...
Along with this book, I used to solve problems by finding them over the Internet and solve it on the white board, and talk through the logic while solving it.
Along with the Coding Questions, there are couple of essential things that are necessary for an Amazon Coding Interview preparation.
    1. Behavioral Questions
To prepare for these questions, I looked at my past, and gathered examples around 14 Amazon Leadership Principles, that you can find in the following link, www.amazon.jobs/en/principles
As I have gathered examples from my previous job, it helped to answer these questions straight away during my Phone Screen and Onsite Interview rather than having me to dig through my memory to find examples.
    2. System Design
I prepared for System Design as the same way I prepared for my Coding Interview. I searched through various problems across the Internet, and tried solving those problems by thinking as Big as possible.
Various resources that helped during my Interview preparation are as follows.
    1. www.bigocheatsheet.com/

Hello Aratrika, sorry for the delayed response. But I personally didn’t have much experience with that type of assessment. In general, if it is for workstyle assessment, I would say, your code should be modularized, easy to read, and have proper testing associated with it. Unfortunately I can’t answer beyond that as I don’t have much context on it.

Hello @SprintMaster , Today I got a link from a recruiter for SDE II online Assessment test, that I need to take within a week. I am not fully prepared and bit hesitant. Can I extend my online test date?
I plan to subscribe to LeetCode and start practicing the specialized questions. What would be the best way to prepare for all topics in these few days?
    Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

    • @SprintMaster
      @SprintMaster  Před 2 lety +1

Hello Trupti, I would highly recommend asking the recruiter to postpone the assessment if you are not prepared. However if they insist, and you want to give a try, then leetcode is definitely a good option. Along with practicing previous problems, spend at least a day focusing on the basics of data structures, and searching and sorting techniques, and learning the basics of concepts like Dynamic programming, and bit manipulation. With the given amount of time, that’s pretty much you can do. And while solving problems, try to at least code for Brute Force techniques if not for optimal. And again, i would recommend talking with recruiter to extend the date. Anyways all the best, and have a happy and successful new year!!

I am so sorry for this late reply. In general OAs will have couple of coding questions, and couple of behavioral questions. But since this is a student intern OA, I personally don’t know what is the pattern there. But in my experience student interns won’t be asked any complicated coding problems. The questions are straight forward, and may be they are based on the CS fundamentals. I would highly encourage you to ask this question to your recruiter. They are usually helpful and can guide you on how to prepare.

      @SprintMaster  Před 3 lety +1

Hello Shweta, as I understand you are aiming to take your Interviews at the end of your 4th year of B.Tech, correct? If so, you definitely have enough time to prepare for the Interview.
Also preparation is relative to the effort you put in. So there’s always enough time regardless of when you start preparing. But starting earlier means you can learn at your pace and have more time to practice more questions and have more strong basics. So start preparing.
And for your other question, usually I have seen that, to crack these Interviews, you need some determination and focus. And typically not many friends will have some goals/focus and very often you will be alone in the journey. So never rely on your friends to join your journey or let them distract you from your goals. Preparation is always relative to one’s own pace. If you find any friends that have same focus as yours, you can prepare with them. But be prepared to prepare alone if you don’t find any.

Hello Avinash, as far as I know, Amazon expects you to be strong with DSA and solving problems if you are applying for SDE positions. Years of experience matter less IMO. However since you have experience, you can put some effort in learning those topics and you can give a try. That’s worth a shot in my opinion because you will be amazed by the amount of knowledge you can get by working for Amazon.

Hello SMAKEL, there is only one way to get a job with Amazon, and that is to crack their coding Interviews. However there are multiple ways you can get to start that application process.
      1. You can apply online at Amazon.jobs
      2. Look out for Linked In job posts by Amazon Recruiters and apply to them.
      3. Amazon conducts some Career Fair type events. Attend one of them, and get in touch with a recruiter.
Also, I want to mention one more thing, after getting the application picked up and the process started, things move pretty fast. So start practicing coding problems even before applying for the job.

In Amazon Level 5 is the second level of an engineer. SDE roles start from L4 in amazon. So yes this is senior SDE but not very senior. Typically if you have industry experience of at least 2 years, they consider you for L5. But after the interview, they may change decisions and give you L4. You don’t have to worry too much about that, you can proceed with interviews and take them.

Yep. Interview process isn’t affected by your notice period. However after the interview if you successfully cleared the Interview, then the team that is conducting the Interview may not want to wait for 3 months. In such a case, they will reassign you to a different team which has flexibility to take you in after 3 months. You don’t need to worry about the notice period. Amazon will wait for you if you clear the Interview.

Since this is virtual onsite may be the bar raiser wasn’t available on the day you had other interviews, and that’s why they wanted to schedule that to a later day.
