    I just did the install over a couple of days. I haven't got the truck flashed yet. Brian your instructions were great! Showing how the electrical connections came apart were invaluable, especially noting how that red clip came off the radio wire harness and noting that the instructions was from the back view of the connector.
    I didn't even try to play with the nipple (wink wink). I just removed the clutch slave cover plate (two 15 mm nuts), drilled a 5/8' hole, skid in a grommet, and fed it through. Easy.
    The body control module was the most challenging, because of the tight quarters. Unlocking the c clip easy. Removing the c clip housing a little challenging by depressing the small tabs a sliding them out. Once out, I cut the electrical tape on the bungle to get me more room the splice the wire. Shaving the wire with one hand was a challenge. I dropped the crimp clip several times and gave up. Just soldered and taped it up. My biggest mistake was not plugging the BCM back in all the way. Truck would not start, nothing worked, except lights and dome. So if you want to play a trick on someone, just disconnect the BCM and sit back and watch...
    Thanks again Brian! I will report back after the dealer flash.

    Cutting the nipple flush to the boot and then adding WD-40 to it, allowed me to pass the entire wire harness through the firewall, including the junction of the purple and yellow wires. After watching your awesome video, I decided to do the hard stuff first and worked backwards by installing everything in the cab and engine compartment first....it worked out great. Thanks again!

    Great video as always!
    Here's a tip I learned to avoid the 'goo' from electrical tape when temporarily taping harnesses, etc.
    Wrap the tape sticky side out for the initial wraps, then twist the roll and wrap again, sticky side in. The goo stays trapped. Also, when you finish wrapping, fold the end back on itself so it's easy to find when it comes time to unwrap.

    Got the camera kit for Christmas '17 for my '15 Ram 2500 Big Horn. Followed this video to the letter. Dealer charged me for the time to flash the system to except the new camera. Works great! Thanks Brian for the awesome tutorial!

  • @outhouseproduction8127

    This is the best instructional video on this cam yet. You are right about fitting through the firewall grommet. What a pain! I do have a couple of things that I learned yesterday while watching this video and installing my OE cam. 1. If you unclip the wiring from the underside of the fuse box, it makes it easier to work on when splicing into. Same goes for the one under the dash. 2. Use the crimps that are supplied for splicing the wiring. The hold the splice and solder and suck in the solder to make a good splice.3.Also the electrical clips are all numbered on the ends of the rows, you can read the pin number and count accordingly to find the correct wire. Under the dash is the same. 4. Once you unclip the wire harness from under the dash the plastic pieces come out of the clip and make soldering and splicing into the wire easier. 5. When soldering under the dash wear safety glasses and gloves. I wish I had wore gloves or quit adding solder earlier. Hot solder does burn the hands.....6. The red clip that holds the pins in for the back of the radio is easy to break. work at it gently or you will have pieces like I did.Thanks for making such a great and informative video!

    My wife and I have back cameras on her suv and my truck and we like them !
    It's great for hooking up a trailer and most important you can see what would normally be a blind spot especially when it comes to small children !

      +Steve Stucker Amen! I always back my big stuff in for that reason.
      When I back, I've already seen what's there- fishing poles, kids, toys, bikes, rake or broom that fell etc. then the camera makes it easy to back in right.
      Then when I leave I walk in front so I know I'm clear to go forward plus it's easier to enter traffic. It's harder to back across a sidewalk and street than to drive forward.

    I could not have completed this job without the help of this video. There were a couple of trouble areas for me. The hardest part was penetrating the rubber grommet where the nipple was. I found that using a pull wire with some lubrication made the difference. When I was done, the truck would not start, no dash lights, no radio. I initially thought it was the battery, turned out that I did not get the plug back in the bus properly. You need to move the cam to the way open position, then push like crazy to get the plug in deep, then pull the cam to close.

    Hi Brian,
    I'm in the process of installing my camera in my 2015 Ram 1500 ecodiesel. Your video answered so much questions that the instructions doesn't. THANK YOU! Your vid also told me what to do with the plug I built after I got the wires in. Instructions doesn't. Also the darn dealer wants $130 to program and won't do until I do the camera install. Thieves/Bastards!
    To get the wiring into the cab and through the firewall, I drilled from the inside through the spot where a clutch cylinder would go. I reamed it large enough to install a grommet in it to protect the wire harness going through it. Easy breezy way to get it there if you have an automatic! I tried that tiny hole and gave up as I have wheel wells that make anything there hard. I'll have to plug the tiny tub now. Thanks, Herb in Vancouver, WA

HOWEVER, in the radio settings there is a setting for "Safety and Assistance". In there, is an option to ENABLE the backup camera lines. I enabled it, and I have lines that display, and move as I turn the steering wheel.

  • @mcblend
    @mcblend Před 6 lety

    First of all, thank you for your video. It helped out immensely. Four things I will say about this install...
    #1 Step 28, Pink Yellow wire in the PDC was not it for me. I had about 6 or 7 pink yellow wires. I looked in my owners manual and found the fuse for my reverse lights and looked right underneath (or near) to find a bank of wires and tested to find one that provided 12V (13.8V in my case) only in reverse (use a multimeter). Spliced/Soldered/Liquid Electric Tape and done.
    #2 Step 37, Cut the nipple and then crawl under the dashboard with a long Phillips #2 screwdriver. Poke into the vag looking hole. you will need to pierce the membrane. It will be in a downward direction, remember you are upside down right now so towards the earth. Poke lightly, leave Phillips in place and go look under the hood. You should see it bulging. This will give you a bearing on your direction, line it up then go give it a push through. At this point, I had Wire Fish Tape so I pulled the Phillips and used the Tape. Before inserting the tape I lubed both sides of vag and nipple with Vasoline. Be patient, go slow and good luck.
    #3 Step 43, the single hardest and delicate step. I can't say much here but have a beer before doing anything and if I can get my 6'4" 250 lbs body in there then so can you or you shouldn't be doing this. Go slow and take a couple brakes. I chose to trim and solder but I bet you can just as easily cut and crimp a butt connector. If you do that just be sure to do it far enough away from the harness side as that buckle housing will need to fit back on the harness and its a little tight.
    #4 Seep 55, look on the back of your radio. Mine had the pinout numbers and I didn't have any wires in those locations. I only found this out after I pulled what I thought was 31-33, installed radio and it didn't work. took it back out and fixed it.
    All in all, it's great having a camera but this is a project. Enjoy

      @richwright494 Před 5 lety

      I have the same problem. It's not the Pink/Yellow wire in the PDC. Was it the same plug, just a different wire? I'm trying to find which fuse/relay is the the backup lights and go from there.

    @brianclark3883 Před 8 lety

    Very cool. Thanks for sharing your finds with us. I enjoy your videos so much that I look forward to Wednesdays and Sundays lol. I'd LOVE to have that in my ol' B3500 battle van but I'm not a fan of that "check entire surroundings" nonsense. Anything that suddenly pops up and eats screen real estate is straight up leprosy and would be enough to drive me away.
    Want to know what I first used when I first got my van? Two cheapo android tablets I had laying around. It wasn't the most efficient means of seeing where my bumper was pointed but it worked. I angled one tablet in a makeshift holder held by a speaker magnet above my bumper which gave me a great field of view and I placed the other tablet in my cup holder. It worked so well that during the day I made long term plans for my new set up but by the end of the day I got so good at backing into stalls that I haven't done it since lmao. It'd work fantastic for folks who tow.

    Looks like a lot of time to install but worth it to save a small fortune at the stealership. +Ozzstar When fuel injection and computers first came out the same barrier existed. And then there was OBDII which became a blessing and then improved through OBDII CAN and now the OBDII Fast CAN. I can test almost any car right down to individual lights in the dash and switches from the transmission to the windows without opening a tool box and the cars identify themselves. Things will continue to improve. Or the car makers will fold.

    I too wondered about the shrink tubing magically appearing in Step 33. I initially thought the existing wire would be exposed, but not cut, so how would the tubing be placed? But if you look oh so carefully in step 30, you can see the end of the existing wire coming from the right. I.e. it has been cut and all three wires overlapped to be crimped and soldered. So one can place the tubing over one end of the cut wire before crimping.

    any factory addons installed after production will require the dealer to update sales code and reconfigure vehicle. everything from remote start, backup cams, even fog lights. none of that will work untill you bring it back and have them update it via factory scan tool.
    ps this camera only works with the touch screen radios models.

      +Houdinii1212 Chrysler was awesome for allowing codes to be read computer free via the odometer or the check engine light by cycling the key. WTH happened with user & technician access? Geez!
      I hate going to the dealership. It sucks! Seems you should at least be able to configure the vehicle through a scantool or web enabled laptop interface. I can update my @#*& cell phone from home. I don't have to pay AT&T or wait for hours at the frick'n phone store.
      I had to do the same thing to get my trailer brake controller to wake up and play nice with the truck. Is it still worth it? Yes. Does it make me think about other purchase options for hours? YES!

    Quick question... I know this is an older video and hopefully you see this.
    Does BOTH your monitors (Rear View Mirror & RA3 Stereo) still continue work off the single camera?
    I have the factory Parkview Mirror like yourself.... I just installed the same Radio as yours. I'm curious if I go to the dealer and have the Stereo monitor activated... I'm worried about loosing the monitor on my mirror.
    Thanks!!! Your videos are top notch.

    I did the install and connected the wiring inside the engine compartment, but did not connect the purple wire under the dash and the camera works- although I do not have the assist lines even though they are set to "on" in the settings of the uconnect. So is the purple wire just for the assist lines or something else? I have seen other comments about the yellow wire being for assist lines.

    I have a 2014 ram 2500 tradesman crew cab 4x4 that I recently acquired. It has a factory backup camera that was put in. It’s in the tailgate and shows up in the rear view. It wasn’t ordered that way as it’s not on the original window sticker. It does not work. Has worked maybe once or twice in the two weeks I’ve owed the truck. I have the RA1 uconnect 3. I’m debating getting the uconnect 5 and moving the camera to the radio. OR going aftermarket with a new head unit and backup camera all together. What should I do? I have no idea why camera is not working

    • @mcblend
      @mcblend Před 6 lety

      Step 37, Cut the nipple and then crawl under the dashboard with a long Phillips #2 screwdriver.

      Seep 55, look on the back of your radio. Mine had the pinout numbers and I didn't have any wires in those locations. I only found this out after I pulled what I thought was 31-33, installed radio and it didn't work. took it back out and fixed it.

      It's another feature the needs to be activated in the body computer. You can bypass the dealership for the programming using a software called alfaOBD with an OBD port adapter.
      In alfaOBD, select Dodge | RAM, select Body Computer, select your year. In the active diagnostics page, select "change car configuration". Find "rear view camera grid lines" in the drop down, change the option to "enabled"

    What happen to knowing your surroundings? And using mirrors? Most guys and some girls i know can back any truck right on the ball/hitch without a spotter. The key thing to do is when the truck is already hitched to what ever you're hauling take multiple mental pics in your head as to where everything is while it is hitched to the truck. It is called critical thought memory, Most people lack that today.

    • @briansmobile1
      @briansmobile1  Před 8 lety

      +James Ellison I've done that for years, but I would tap the ball mount. I did it parking new cars multiple times a day at the dealership in a super packed parking lot too. The camera beats it all hands down for consistent accuracy no matter the terrain or angle of the trailer you're hooking up to 100 times out of 100 and with ease- even when you're tired.

    out of curiosity I have a 2016 ram 2500 big horn diesel. I wasn't sure if I needed to run the whole wire harness to the radio or if the existing harness that's there had the capability already within it? also you mentioned having the dealer install the software prior to your installation is that correct? thanks for your insight!! great job!

    • @idontknowjackshitt
      @idontknowjackshitt Před 8 lety +2

      Quick thing to check. Open the tailgate and pop the plastic plate covering the wiring harness on the body side. If the body side connector only has 2 wires going to the tailgate, then you need to run the new wire from front to back. I have the 2016 1500 ecodiesel and I installed the tailgate handle and camera. I noticed the wiring harness within the tailgate was identical to the one in the kit so I was hoping it was pre-wired for it. Went to dealer and got the radio flashed and it didn't work when placed in reverse. Ended up following this guide to finish it off. Works great now.
