  • It's been a while since I deployed Skaro, my beefy RS816 NAS. For a while I've been looking for a good capacity backup solution to work in conjunction with Skaro to give me peace of mind. I managed to grab an RS214 on eBay used for an excellent price. It's an older generation model, but perfect for my needs as an automated backup solution.
    I'd like to say a massive thank you to William for providing me with 3x 6TB WD Purple hard drives, completely free of charge for this project as a donation to IMNC.
    Thanks for watching! I hope you all enjoy...

    Hi Tom, I also have a similar setup to yours in terms of home backups. I backup all devices (laptops, phones, tablets, etc.) to a Synology NAS (RS816) using Synology Drive. Then, I make "offsite" backups from the Synology NAS to Amazon AWS S3 cloud storage using Cloudsync (key here is to have good DNS servers, I personally use a local Raspberry Pi running PiHole, this is quicker than an ISP DNS!). Cloud storage is very cheap and you can be sure is safe and secure. Also, you don't have to buy a seperate NAS to host at someone else's home!

      I hadn't thought of work. Hmmmm. That is actually a VERY interesting idea! We have loads of free rack space and good bandwidth. The internet connection is only really utilised to capacity on 2 nights of the week typically. I could easily do a weekly dump on a quiet night.
      Thanks for this idea, my brain will definitely be chewing on this for a while!

    I think the third drive is meant as a cold spare, a drive you can just pop in to replace one that failed without needing to wait for shipping.

    • @ItsMyNaturalColour
      @ItsMyNaturalColour  Před 4 lety +2

      In a RAID config, having a cold spare on site is definitely recommended, but as I've configured this without RAID, a cold spare is not such a key component.

    @vitelliu5 Před 4 lety +12

    Apologies in advance if this is addressed in the video, I just got to the part with the fan replacement (which is only halfway) and wanted to comment before I forgot.
    Double check the voltage of the fan you removed vs the Noctua you replaced it with. From what I saw it looked like the Noctua was a 5v fan and PC fans are usually 12v. I don't know about NAS fans as I have no experience, but If you replaced a 12v fan with a 5v fan I think you're in for some issues down the road.
    -Edit after finishing the video
    if it's a 5v fan plugged into a 12v source, that could also explain how loud it was.

    • @ItsMyNaturalColour
      @ItsMyNaturalColour  Před 4 lety +6

      Hey D W.
      You're absolutely right. My apologies for not mentioning this in the video. I should've been clearer when I made the swap, that it was a temporary measure. This was a quick swap to avoid a noisy night, I'll be sourcing a replacement 12V fan soon. Unfortunately I didn't have a 12V 40mm fan to hand.

    Hey Tom
    With offsite backup on hyper backup there is a check box for client side encryption. I have an offsite NAS at my parents house which mine backs up to (and vice versa). With the encryption enabled you local Nas encrypts that data BEFORE it is sent. Meaning that Nas at the other site only ever sees encrypted data with no way of undoing it. It’s a great tool meaning you don’t have to worry about the physical security of the remote Nas as there’s no way to get to the data stored on it. If you ever want to play around and test it (probably just your exports since they aren’t sensitive data) I’d be happy to share a folder with you to have a go with it.

      Do you mean for this NAS, or generally as a choice for both of my NAS'? I guess the answer to both anyway would be ease of use, quick to deploy, very compact systems (shallow 1U), DSM is lovely, loads of support via packages to do pretty much anything you could want which are all super easy to configure and for this one in particular, got a great deal so couldn't go wrong.

  • @leexgx
    @leexgx Před 4 lety +1

    I probably wouldn't get anything less then 4 bay Synology nas so can use shr2 (basically raid6 but makes it far simpler to drop in new disks or mix different size disks) so it can handle 2 drive failures or dual fault, (replacing/rebuilding a disk and you get a data error on another disk when rebuilding would toast as shr1 or raid5 array)
    Only downside is it does use 2 disks for party so you only have 2 disks for space but you have to lose 3 disks to lose all data (likelihood of that happening is very unlikely, but having an data error happen when rebuilding and total loss of the array is far more likely to happen on raid5/shr1)
    I still see people using shr1 or raid5 in 4 or more bay nas boxes when they don't even need the space (like 4x2tb shr1/raid5 but only 200-300gb of data)

      ItsMyNaturalColour Tom - Is it an option to physically store all your green archive drives at your parents, instead of on a shelf in your house, in a room with your originals? If you’ve got all that same ‘live/original’ data on Skaro - having the archives/backups in a locked file cabinet at your parents, wouldn’t that be ideal redundancy? Then you also wouldn’t need to worry about backing up so much data to a friends/work/cloud. If it was me, I’d still be archiving to a drive every year or two and stashing them off-site. Food for thought...

    Having two separate volumes could cause issues with backing up as it fills with data . You could easily have a situation with 500gb free on each volume but wish to back up a 1tb shared folder .jbod would be more suitable imo. The way you slipped the second Nas in suggests it isn't sagging and therefore the shelf isn't strictly needed.

    • @ItsMyNaturalColour
      @ItsMyNaturalColour  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Paul. As the backups will be automated and run weekly, it's very unlikely that I'll be backing up that much data in one go. It's much more likely to be a 10GB or 15GB chunk at a time per share. If I was doing manual backups and picking / choosing what to back up, then I could see how this could become a problem, you're absolutely right.
      In terms of the sagging, Skaro was sagging quite significantly when I removed the shelf, as you can see during the shots from the back of the cabinet, where I point the camera through to the front. When I slid the new unit in, it 'pushed' Skaro up and was sandwiched between Skaro and the shelf. The shelf is holding the majority of the weight for both systems, meaning that I can unscrew either one from the front and not have it slip anywhere, it stays put.

    On the subject of Synology replacing the Mac Mini in the rack, for what you use it for, it very well could, though, if you're still wanting to connect FireWire stuff, perhaps not. But I know you serve out you iTunes Library using the Mac, well, there is a package on the Synology that does the same thing, though until very recently, that was broken and didn't work with Catalina at all, but that's all fixed, there was a forum post that had a Synology link to a new package you could manually install. It all works now. Mojave was still unaffected.
    I did notice when you're configuring the drives, you used Basic rather than JBOD. Probably will work fine, but if you're going to keep 2 discreet drives, I wonder if JBOD might have been better. Because what is being done here, is drives are being combined into one, then divided again into two volumes, while that's fine, I wonder if it creates a slight overlap, and if one drive dies, some data might be lost off the other.. Not sure how much you'd lose if any.
    Still it's good to have a backup, as a NAS isn't a backup in itself unless it's backing something else up. My NAS is full, so I'm going to have to figure something out lol I really want to build a file server

      Hey Steven
      Intersting! I was always meant to give that package a whirl. These days, I only use iTunes to host a Photos folder share to Apple TV for a screensaver. I'm now running Plex for my music and TV shows, and I use the Plex app on Apple TV and Amazon Echo to listen around my home. I made the swap when I retired the AirPort Express' from my home. They were one of the main reasons I kept the iTunes library share going.
      Regarding the drives..... trying to wrap my head around it here. I created 2 completely separate storage pools, then created 2 separate volumes. In my mind, these drives are operating completely separately, therefor no overlap?

    • @StevenJPiper
      @StevenJPiper Před 4 lety

      @@ItsMyNaturalColour On the drives, I was just musing a little, Spanning, or to use and Apple term "concatenating", stiches the drives together, and maybe the overlap is no worse that on raided volumes, where the "stripe" or overlap is only perhaps in the region of kilobytes, like 128k or something.... I don't know, I might be talking out of my arse haha I might rewatch the vid, I was sure you selected Basic not JBOD. JBOD keeps the drives as two completely separate concerns.
      Ah ok, I hadn't taken photos into account, and maybe had not paid attention to the Plex stuff if it was mentioned. I use that for my video content. Sorry, i probably come across as very unobservant...

    @ 50:00 What the piont of using Time Machine if you don't have local data stored in your machines ???

    • @ItsMyNaturalColour
      @ItsMyNaturalColour  Před 4 lety

      Great question, Max.
      Time Machine is still very useful, even if you're storing minimal amounts of data locally. Firstly, Time Machine backs up the whole system including data, OS, Applications and all settings. If your Mac fails, or you need to restore from an earlier point in time if something catastrophic has happened to your install, you can use Time Machine to roll back to an earlier point in time, and restore everything as it was without starting from scratch.
      Secondly, while I store the vast majority of my data on Skaro, that doesn't include active projects. Skaro is too slow to video edit comfortably to/from, so whatever I'm working on at the time is stored locally. I then copy the libraries over to Skaro only when all the projects within that library are complete. Time Machine is handy here too. Because it's an hourly backup system, you get very valuable protection against accidental deletion or accidental irreversible changes to a project, wether that's video, audio, whatever. In the past, the majority of my use case for Time Machine has been restoring things I've accidentally deleted, or restoring something prior to messing it up entirely.

    Why don't you use your mac pro 1,1 as a backup server? If you schedule it to go on at a certain time and shut down when the backup has complete, power consumption shouldn't be an issue.

    • @ItsMyNaturalColour
      @ItsMyNaturalColour  Před 4 lety +1

      An interesting suggestion, and actually something that hasn't crossed my mind.
      After thinking about your comment for a few minutes, I'd say the reason is because this NAS is tiny in comparison. The Mac Pro is huge / doesn't fit in the rack. Yes it's true that I'm storing it in my room at the moment, so I could easily run cabling to it and use it, but I'm hoping that sometime in the near future I can find a better storage for this stuff and free up all the space in my office.
      Regarding power. I'd actually be very interested to see what would come out as more power hungry. Synology RS214 powered 24/7, or Mac Pro 1,1 powered for a few hours per night. That would be interesting.

    • @itsmesb4399
      @itsmesb4399 Před 4 lety

      @@ItsMyNaturalColour Of course I competely understand that! I only really meant as a sort of temporary thing if for whatever reason you need more bays and can't afford a new NAS / expansion enclosure, and it would run macOS so you could replace the jobs that your mac mini does with it like a 2 in 1 deal. Regarding power usage, my 5,1 draws arrpund 150w when idel alone, considering it has 1 ssd and 3 hdd's and an rx580 which is very power hungry. If you had a bigger rack, I would suggest those rwck moutn adaptors that a company sold, but of course you don't have a bigger rack and I have no idea who made them lol. • @ItsMyNaturalColour
      @ItsMyNaturalColour  Před 4 lety

      Good question.
      I'm not quite there yet. If it gets to that level, I think I'd be happier to sacrifice some of my hoarded data, rather than face the huge costs associated with tape backup. The drives are expensive, the tapes are also expensive, and the whole thing just gets out of control.
      A few years ago, I purchased an LTO3 drive and 3 or 4 tapes with the intention of creating some backup tapes for some of my more crucial files, but I've never set it up to use. LTO 3 was already fairly old when I purchased the drive, so I bought it used for a good price, but the SCSI interface presents a few issues that I'm not really prepared to deal with, with my current setup and configuration.
      Simple answer then, I see it as more hassle than it's worth. I'd probably turn to more cloud storage before tape. That's not to say I will never do a video covering LTO drives, it will be great fun, but I probably won't use tape backup for my real world backups.

      Don't worry, if it came down to running for our lives, I think that drive would be the last thing on my mind.
      What I was trying to get across in that section was, there's nothing wrong with having a 'simple' backup that you can lay your hand on and access, without any sort of configuration or additional setup to access the data. If I did need to leave fast for some reason and our lives weren't in imminent danger, I would always have the option to grab that drive if I felt it was appropriate.
      As mentioned in the video, I backup the majority of my photos using iCloud Drive, and many of my most 'crucial' docs are stored there also.

      @@BenCos2018 Just a bit ;)
      There are 2 very important factors that I have to take into consideration when shopping for a system for this rack. The first is depth - my rack can only accept systems that are around 450mm deep at an absolute maximum. That's considered 'shallow depth', so compatibility is a no go for the vast majority of 1U systems available, seeing as a typical server rack is over 900mm deep. The second is noise. Enterprise grade kit, especially 1U servers, tend to be exceptionally loud. Absolutely fine if you have a network room / comms room / server room, or even just a spare room where you don't care about noise... but as you know, I work and film my videos in this room so for that reason alone, fan noise needs to be kept under control. I don't aim for silence, as that would be unrealistic running all of this stuff in such a small space, but I do aim to keep it as low as possible.
