    I've been running a Hyundai Ionic since Jan 17. It's done around 4300 miles at the time of writing this. I mainly use it for a 16 mile round trip commute from Dunstable to Harpenden, M1, M25 runs to visit my son and M1, M6 to visit family in Birmingham. So a good mixture or road types. The onboard computer indicates I'm doing an average of 57.7 mpg. This is not a peek figure. this is a genuine average as the computer has not been reset since purchasing the car. The sport mode makes a significant difference to accelerating from rest, making it safe to pull into that gap in the traffic. the gearbox is smooth and you hardly notice it changing, and it's same when changing from engine to electric motor. Cruising on the motorway you don't know when its changing from engine to electric, and it will run solely on the electric motor at 70 mph.
    Prior to purchasing this car I was an avid Mitsubishi fan having had 5 of them in the past, mainly because of their bullet proof reliability and build quality. However, I'm impressed with the build quality of the Ionic and it's more comfortable than any of the Mitsubishi's I have had.
    My model Ionic is the Premium, not the Premium ES used in the video. It still has a lot of the features shown in the video, but has cloth seats, no blind spot aware system or the rear transverse traffic warning. But it does have the inductive charging, the apple and android system and the heated seats and steering wheel heaters. So a really well appointed middle range car. I think this one will be the most sort after version of the ionic range.

    The downside to the Prius is that Toyota does not back up their products. After buying a new Prius in 2007 I had to pay $2000 to Toyota for the main battery failure. (the car had under 150K miles on it) I also found out that if I was living in California the repair would have been free. In addition to the battery, the paint has flaked off in several areas and the entire ABS system failed, a repair cost of $2500. Hyundai's warranty is far superior to anything that Toyota, or most other manufacturers provide.

    Got the Hyundai hybrid Premium SE model recently. (2018 -UK) Loving it. Easily the best car I have ever had. Early days but averaging 58/59 mpg although I did have it in the sport mode a few times which makes it feel a different car again.Just over 60 mpg on longer trips. Have to get used to a silent car on start up. Looks stunning in the platinum silver finish and much better looking than the Prius. Dual clutch automatic super smooth.

    POINTLESS!...ACC is not pointless. Smart car people made Auto stop and ACC because there was a need. Repeated deaths and costly repairs have created the need, and the budget, to create these devices.
    Hey it wasn't too long ago that seat belts were an annoyance. If a new driver was texting while approaching you, would you like them driving a 93 civic or a car with the latest safety tech?

    • @motorsforthemasses
      @motorsforthemasses  Před 7 lety +1

      I did say personally I see it as pointless as I like to be in control of the car and such gadgets take the ability for me to control the car, away. I understand you could argue ABS, ESP etc also does that but it does change how I drive. I still speed up and slow down at my own pace and I am right in that you need to do that all to be able to pass your test. I do see your argument that accidents have laid the path for such tech to be invented but I still do not want it on my car!

Have a great day!

    • @plagick
      @plagick Před 7 lety

      I don't understand why they need to be filmed driving either, correct!
      I am not angry, I just didn't get the impression you have been using the technology long enough to understand the greatness.
      I really like your show. I absolutely appreciate your work and enjoy the banter.

    • @motorsforthemasses
      @motorsforthemasses  Před 7 lety +1

      Thank you for saying so. With respect, using the technology long enough has nothing to do with it. I know I like to control the car myself rather than have a computer take that decision away from me. I love driving and love cars and fully appreciate technology. Like I said, I just don't want it myself, I prefer to drive the car myself. I can understand it can prevent some accidents and most likely go wrong less than a human of course but for those who love to drive, it is a passion that ones needs the whole experience of. It is like a skydiver jumping out of a plane, but a computer pulls the shoot and rather than he/she steer it completely, a machine takes over and adjusts his control so if he/she thought to would move left and then right a few seconds later, a computer decides...no, it is actually safer to turn left now, forget right...not happening.... I would wager no skydiver would want that, he/she would want to control the whole thing and enjoys the thrill of it.

      Because buying a new hybrid isn't like buying a Ferrari. It's not an emotional purchase. The Hyundai is not fake or less good. I'd simply buy the one that you like best and fits your budget. It's a good buy either way. My Ioniq will arrive somewhere next month in Premium edition. A similar-equipped Prius costs way more than a Prius in The Netherlands. Also I think the Prius is very ugly. So ... that makes it an easy choice for me and also answeres your question.

      I like that there are more hybrid car options out there. And I'd hardly call the Hyundai Ioniq a "copy" of the Prius. The Ioniq looks completely different from the Prius (nicer IMHO). It has a duo clutch transmission instead of a CVT. The battery technology is different as well. Really the one edge that the Prius has over the Ioniq is that it's proven. It's been around a long time and all the early bugs have been sorted out. This is where the killer Hyundai warranty come into play. Just one of many things to not worry about when thinking of buying the Toyota. Oh yeah it has a rear wiper too. I like the warrant on the Hyundai if Toyota ever match this then there would be no competition at all. But seriously if you drive the Toyota.. would you ever need it!!?? Yes you might need to take an extended warranty that might help.
