    "Gaming laptops are a waste of money. You can build a desktop for x amount of money cheaper"
    Some of us work for a living, and go on business trips with a lot of downtime. You want to try to bring a PC and a monitor onto a plane in your luggage which is already filled with all your business jazz, and then try to set all that crap up in your hotel room be my guest.
    You're paying for the convenience of portability, they're not overpriced, they're expensive because of the engineering challenges involved with putting all those components into the space of 3-4 liters of space. with a monitor, with wifi, with all the i/o, with speakers, with a keyboard, with a trackpad, etc.

      Trevor Williamson shit they arnt even that expensive anymore. a desktop that I can't take on deployment or TDY schools costs about 1400 while a similar equipped gtx 1070 laptop costs 1560 ish. I'll get the laptop.

      Trevor Williamson yeah good luck being in the military without buying a laptop, I built a great tower and bought a lower game capable laptop for deployments and schools.

      As someone who is about to start driving for a living, a laptop is pretty much the only option. Besides, you can get a pretty decent gaming laptop for the money these days anyway. Hell, I can get something that rivals my year and a half old gaming rig (GTX 970 and an i5-4690K OC @ 4.4GHz) for just a few hundred more.

    • @trevorwilliamson8160
      @trevorwilliamson8160 Před 7 lety +8

      Exactly. I have a couple friends who are truckers and they also love to game, so they have that T-Mobile mobile hotspot and a gaming laptop in their big rig. One does cross country hauling so he has one of those cabs with a bunk in it, and is still able to play all his favorite games.

      Many used cars that are some 5+ year old cost 2500 give or take. Cars lose value really fast when they get older even if they are in a really good condition. Ofc, it's a different story if you're on of those people who buy new cars every 2 years or so and sell your car at half of its original price. Most people are not like you.

    Have had this laptop for about 3 months and its been my best pc experience i've ever had. Not only does it play any game at over 60fps but the battery life is actually pretty good, lasts around 4-6 hours even with brightness at 50%, editing on premiere, watching youtube and even rendering. Hate them or not, Alienware definitely knows how to make quality products. This thing is built like a beast.

    • @AshTheFriendlyNeko

    • @plackiplicki3531
      @plackiplicki3531 Před 6 lety +3

      PANoramic TV Hey dude, could I ask you like two questions ? I bought myself the Alienware m14x back in 2012 (previous Alienware laptop generation) and the only real problems I got with it about 2.5-3 year later were that the battery got ever worse with time (you had to keep it charging while playing or the FPS of good games would go down drastically, which eventually damages the battery) and that it was fucking complicated to clean the blades (the ones for refrigeration) because they you couldn't get them out of the laptop without dismantling the whole thing. Now I may be interested in buying myself a new Alienware, and I was curious if you saw similar issues or expect to have them later aswell.

    • @panoramictv9249
      @panoramictv9249 Před 6 lety +3

      Placki Plicki Well thats normal for any laptop i think. Especially when you use it for gaming, meaning the chassis gets hot relatively frequent. I suggest if and when you upgrade, use a cooling pad to prevent the temperatures from getting too high. I still have the 15 and have experienced no slow downs. Bottom line is Alienwares are just built very solid (especially the newer ones) and should last 5 years or even more. I know ill be keeping mine for a very long time.

    • @plackiplicki3531
      @plackiplicki3531 Před 6 lety

      PANoramic TV Ty, though my most important question was the other part ; have you tried opening it up to see if it's easy to clean the blades ? This is a big deal when it comes to gaming afterall.

    I carry the 15 everywhere! Not as bad as it seems in terms of weight, and it's a good trade off for screen size and build quality. Don't have to carry the charger that often because of the battery lasting about 4 to 5 hours. I have this exact spec and couldn't be happier. Third Alienware and haven't had issues with any of them.

  • @kennethchartrand4251
    @kennethchartrand4251 Před 7 lety +9

    I'm presently writing this comment on my Alienware 13" OLED and I must say that there is no laptop on the market that has a screen this gorgeous. Perfect Black levels and contrast ratio. I mainly play Diablo 3 with it and the GTX 1060 does an amazing job. I added another M.2 Drive(Samsung 950) and I especially like the fact that the 7700HQ has HEVC decoding, so watching movies on this screen is awesome.
    Performance is great(though the battery life I wish could be a bit better) but I have to admit that the Keyboard has the nicest touch out of any Laptop keyboard I have ever used and that goes with many hours of gaming in addition to writing. The amount of Ports on this is also amazing (Thunderbolt 3 in addition to USB-C and USB 3.0 ports). Its been 4 months that I have been using the AW 13" and if I were to do it all over again, I would get the exact same thing.
    Too bad AW does not offer OLED on the 15" or 17" models because I would have gotten that. Alienware have really stepped up their game(no pun intended) and it shows on the quality of this laptop. So glad I choosed this over the Razor.
    Good review Linus.

      I just got the Alienware 13 R2 open box excellent at best buy for $769.99 looks and works like new. It has the Oled screen and yeah it is the best screen ive ever seen. I'm not sure if they revised the oled screen in the 13 r3 at all but r2 is 2560 x 1440p. It only has gtx 965m and dual core i7 6500u so that's why it was cheaper of course. I'm just a casual gamer tho but GTA V and Doom new version run pretty good on it. Do you guys think adding 8 gb ram to make it 16 GB ram total is worth it?

Couple of weeks ago saw a heavily discounted OLED 13 on dells outlet website as it was marked as scratched and dented and nervously decided to pull the trigger. Laptop arrived the other day without any damage whatsoever, just no original box. Best money on tech I ever spent! Not sure how I am going to go back to any other screen now..

    • @ajis1337
      @ajis1337 Před 7 lety +5

      For Alienware's laptops the 1070 onwards options are definitely overpriced if you're buying it without discounts or deals. Alienware Japan just had a Golden Week sale which along with tons of other discounts, allowed buyers to upgrade to the GTX 1080 for FREE if they got a model with the GTX 1070. Its quite an immense steal. The sale ended just last week though.
      Why get the models with the enthusiast-level cards (GTX 1070-1080) when these cards are overkill for 1080p gaming, and 4k gaming is almost unnoticeable with a 17-inch screen? 4k gives much better returns on larger screens. The GTX 1060 is more than enough for 60 FPS on max settings and 1080p for several games which is just about right for a 17-incher. I'd think for 4k gaming on max settings it would be better to just buy a regular (not mobile-version) GTX 1070 or 1080 and use Alienware's external GPU enclosure instead. MSI laptops have the same option.

    As an Alienware user for 3-4 years...
    The thing that they don't tell you... is that yes you can game really good on this, it has good support... if you expect to change your laptop after a year.
    I own an Alienware 15 R1 (2015) and drivers stopped getting updated a year ago (2016)... it still works pretty good, but I'm having compatibility issues with some drivers and windows 10.

      With recent updates the audio controlers mess up, It's a bug that has been ongoing since windows 10 was released, controllers are not properly upated so everytime a big update comes for windows 10, you have to clean install audio drivers either way you can't use any headphone or microphone jack among other things.
      Also I've seen people been having a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE blue screen. So I been having this problem too, again... since I updated to Windows 10... drivers have not been updated since 2016 and some even from 2015
      I'm kinda regretting this buy actually since there's a lack of driver support for a 2015 Computer imo.

Screen wiggling around and user tries to scroll while finger hits the screen unintentionally while wiggling. I have used ThinkPad for years now and I cannot see myself go from TrackPoint any time soon. It just feels better and my screen is smudge-free. I would like to see an experiment, maybe, of someone from LMG to live with a TrackPoint laptop instead of a touch screen one.

    Just bought the R3 15" i7 7700 with GTX1060, 60 hz no GSYNC panel. So far I love it! 13" screen is too small for me to game on. Its main competition was MSI, which is also an elegant machine with similar price, specs and performance and definitely lighter. Two things decided me in favor of Alienware - build quality and battery life. Just got back from Europe and played 2 hours of Skyrim each way on the plane on ultra settings, 30 fps on battery (60 fps no problem plugged in). My desktop rig has GTX 1070 with a 27" GSYNC 144 hz monitor. I don't need me laptop to be a desktop replacement, but I travel a lot for work so I wanted to be able to bring along something to game on flights and in hotel with. Setup was a breeze.

    Let me correct one thing you said: The battery is *not* a quick swap. I know this because the battery on my 2 year old laptop suddenly swelled up and was on the verge of exploding. (Per the internet, this is a common problem with this laptop.) Swapping it out involved removing the back, the drives, the Wifi, unhooking some cables, popping off the ports cover, removing the next layer of plastic, and *then*, I could reach the battery.

It looks amazing on paper specs-wise for just $1200 (cheap as far as gaming laptops are concerned) and it looks professional and pretty sleek too. It would be great if you did a video showing whether it's really all its cut out to be based on the specs. The few decent reviewers that have reviewed it have had differing ideas on its viability for gaming and whether the cooling system is good or not, and it would be great to have everything cleared up once and for all.

    went from a late 2014 alienware 13 with a i5 4200u and a 860m to a predator 15 with a 6700hq and a 1060 6gb. the alienware was pretty thin but lacked performance when i wanted it and the predator is a monster (size and weight) but never falls short of any task. IMO bigger is better having had both. i would sacrifice (and did) the portability of my old machine to lose the headache of not being able to play certain games when i really wanted to.
    also i have to admit when the lighting controls are configured correctly an alienware can look much more "businessy/sophisticated" as opposed to the predator where some keys are permanantly red and there are red vents all over it. luckily im a 20 year old automotive student so i never have to bring my laptop into any meetings or business environments, but if i did have to do that the alienware would be the better choice because of the black/grey chassis and no permanent red vents on all sides lol. great video LTT keep it up.
    sorry i keep editing this comment longer but, i also have to agree that when i had the alienware 13 even being a 2014 not a 2017 it did feel very premium and high build quality. having said all of this, of all of the pc's/ pc components i've ever bought my predator 15 is the thing i am most happy about and have the least regrets about purchasing. because of this i say bigger is better.
    can also atest to the glitches with 2 finger scrolling on alienwares. the problem has existed for the 3 years i had my alienware and has not been fixed since, cmon dell.

    • @IntenseNoobFPS
      @IntenseNoobFPS Před 7 lety

      Gaming laptops are such a mystery to me. They use more power which drains the battery meaning you need to have it plugged in all the time.... which kinda defeats the purpose of it being a portable device.
      I ended up buying a dell inspiron 15 7000, it has a gtx1050ti that can play BF1 on medium-high while still being efficient enough to last 8hrs+ at university. It's silent, has a num-pad, powerful enough to do any task, is about 1kg less than that alienware shit and has a nicer finish that doesn't scream "I bought this laptop instead of having friends".

    • @TheSilverSky91
      @TheSilverSky91 Před 7 lety +1

      Gaming laptops exist not necessarily because people want to game unplugged on battery life, but because they don't have the room for a desktop or need a mobile PC with decent power. I use various architectural 3D modeling programs and adobe products for school and we are required to have a laptop to use these programs in our studio (design course). I got a gaming laptop because I was looking at spending a minimum of $1000 for a laptop for school but I still wanted to game on PC, I didn't want to spend >2500 for two computers to satisfy both needs so I just got a gaming laptop. It's very nice to be able to play a round of Overwatch or any other game at >60FPS in between classes.
      Other people I know are never home due to work or school and like to game from wherever they are and go for a gaming laptop.
      I do agree with you that a "lower tier" non-gaming laptop is a better choice for most people, but most people don't want anything more than 30-60FPS gaming, these gaming laptops are for people who are on the go but want a better gaming experience. I also agree that gaming laptop aesthetics (and gamer aesthetic) in general are terrible, the gigabyte p series and razer blade pro are my jam tho, dell's XPS laptops are sexy too, but the new gigabyte aero series look the best.

    • @IntenseNoobFPS
      @IntenseNoobFPS Před 7 lety +1

      also guess it depends on pricing. In Australia the xps is roughly $2400, base model alienware laptops are $2500. $1000 here buys you a cardboard box with laptop written on it in texta..... So pretty much if you can afford a $3000k+ laptop you can afford a decent dektop as well.

    On the back is a port where you can put a video card in so if the video card isn’t keeping up with the new games you can buy the new on and just slip it into that port

      but dont people who use imperial also use pounds as a mass?

    • @sttthr
      @sttthr Před 7 lety +5

      The force of weight isn't exactly constant. Fg=G(m1*m2)/d^2
      There's one variable factor, which is the distance between the centers of the masses.
      So the weight would be different depending on the altitude. It's not significant, but for scientific purposes it matters. There is nothing wrong in measuring mass, though, it is the right way.

    • @eyssa2611
      @eyssa2611 Před 7 lety +10

      because the force of weight depends on gravity, and gravity is not a constant

    • @mikel_zz
      @mikel_zz Před 7 lety +1

      But in this case, you might as well use Fg=mg because we are close to the earth. People only use Fg=G(m1*m2)/d^2 when comparing 2 different objects(one of them is not the earth) or if we are far away from the earth

      Never owned one myself. Cause every one of my friends who I have known to have owned one has had them break. My friend james has his motherboard fail just last month. My friend ben back in freshman year break twice, the original hard rive and the replacement they sent and finally my friend Jessica had one of her ailenware laptops break, lasted most of a year pretty good but then all of the sudden the battery and motherboard failed at once (battery probably caused the other. but point stands).
      From my experience all laptops are a bit of a waste of money unless your really that mobile and cant just deal with a chromebook but spending big on one with as bad a track record as that just isnt advisable imo.
