DIY Bandsaw Fence: Band Saw Upgrades Continue

- In this video I build a custom fence system for my bandsaw because Harbor Freight does not sell one for this saw and Kreg is expensive. With this added resaw fence, this band saw is a force to be reckoned with.

Nice build. Only change I'd make would be that bolt on the front. I'd see if I couldn't swap that out for a caliper clamp bolt/plate for pushing in a car's brake caliper pump when changing disc brake pads. The plates on the threads and end would offer a bit more stability I think than just the rounded carriage head bolt by itself would. That Brinly-Hardy flyer was a nice touch. I used to work there, LOL!

@@BassadorWoodworking Here's one more tip just because I never see anyone mention it. If you accidently put a small dent in a board, put a couple of drops of water on the dent, then put a cloth over it and run a hot clothes iron over it a couple of times and the dent will swell back out....though then you may need to sand it if it gets too "proud". :)

Thank you!! Harbor Freight doesn't sell one for their band saw anymore, but the Delta, Grizzly and Jet riser kits fit with minimal modification.

Great video! Your transitions are getting better and better. Also, because there is tightening on both ends of the fence, I bet yours is more sturdy than the standard fence I have on the laguna.

Beautiful. I just got a dilapidated bandsaw for free a few days ago. It's all cleaned up, waiting for wear parts that are on order. If I can get it in decent shape I will definitely be building this fence. (With some personal mods of course, that is what we do after all - LOL).

Interesting concept but I must admit that seeing you pushing past the tablesaw blade with a loose sweater gave me momentary OSHA flashbacks.

You should have built fence extensions on other side and flipped fence. It's backwards.

Great video and nice design! How square did it end up being to the work table?
Thank you very much! I was actually surprised at how close to square the fence travels and locks. I keep a 123 block at the bandsaw and place it against the fence while I tighten it to shore it up, but for the most part it is never noticeably out of square.
Nice. You could 3D print the knob, if you’ve got someone in your area with one. They’re everywhere now. I have 3. 😀

@@BassadorWoodworking I have. Monoprice Mini V2, Creality Ender 3, and a Prusa MK3. If you’re considering something cheap, Creality printers have a great following and give really good results. PRUSA is a more expensive, but built very well!
Great build video!!! What made you put your fence on the outside instead of the arm side? I just wonder because mine was set up that way for re-sawing when I originally got it, but I moved the fence to the arm side for capacity. I wonder what the pros vs cons are of that?
Thank you! I put the fence to the right of the blade mostly for the ability to extend the table. The fence also slides on and off of the rail, so if I mounted it to the left of the blade I would need to remove the blade to remove the fence.
Maybe he'll cut something wider or taller on that side,seems he could remove it easily and put it onto the arm side,then add a fence on both sides

Thank you! Yes, the fence rails extend all the way to the left end of the table, so I can place the fence on either side of the blade!
You need to add a spacer between your carriage bolt head and the table to stop the fence from trying to creep on you when tightening up the fence. The spacer can be out of wood or metal, just something for the head of the bolt to turn against to put pressure on the table.

From your experience can you resaw a 3mm board from an 2x8 inch lumber, 3 ft long, with that 14 inch bandsaw? Is the 1HP good enough to cut through 8 inch deep oak? Thank you.
I have never tried resawing 3mm of a 2x8 so I cannot speak from experience on that, but I wouldn't think it would be a problem depending on the wood species. I have resawn a some rosewood to get some fretboard blanks.
The saw is a little underpowered with the current motor, so I would would likely pre-saw an 8 inch slab of something as hard as oak on the table saw to get most of the meat out and then finish the cut on the bandsaw.

Were the wood pieces just cut from 3/4" plywood? If so, was it a particularly good grade of plywood?
Yes, this is 3/4" plywood. It is made from some cabinet grade A/B birch plywood I had left from other projects.
Thanks, would there be any benefit to also extending the fence rail 6 inches in the other direction so you have identical extensions in each direction so you could use the fence on either side? Would the added extension cause any problems or interfere in any way?
Okay, I just read your reply below about needing to remove the blade to remove the fence from the left setup but couldn't you just slide the fence to the left to get it off if the extensions were identical with the removable boards?
Good work. Two suggestions:
1 - Lose the comments about what you did before, most of us don't care about things that don't relate directly to building the fence, which is what we want to see and why we tuned in.
2 - Add a shot at the end that shows the fence in use, even if it is only of a 2x4 being split down the middle on edge.
Overall, good job on both the fence and the video.

I agree. Videos like this are anti-climatic. It's like watching a 20 minute knife sharpening video and at the end no cut test.
